Chamber meeting sold out – Rocky Mount Telegram

Tickets for the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce’s 110th annual Meeting of the Membership are sold out and none will be available at the door.

The keynote speaker will be David S. Langdon, a senior economist and senior policy advisor to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Chamber officials said they are looking forward to his speech.

“Having David Langdon address our business members is a great opportunity to gain insight into how national economics and policy impacts us here on the local level as we strive to regain our economic strength,” said 2013 Chamber Chairman Bill Lehnes. (Source: Read more)

The Slow Motion Lynching of President Barack Obama – Redletter Christians

I’ve watched liberal and right wing commentators alike blame the president for being lynched. They say “he’s not reaching out enough” or “he’s too cold.” It’s the equivalent of assuming that the black man being beaten by a couple of thug cops must have “done something.”

I am a white privileged well off sixty-one-year-old former Republican religious right wing activist who changed his mind about religion and politics long ago.  The New York Times profiled my change of heart saying that to my former friends I’m considered a “traitorous prince” since my religious right family was once thought of as “evangelical royalty.”

I’ve just spent the last 7 years writing over 200,000 words in blogs and articles in support of President Obama. My blogs on the Huffington Post alone would add up to a book in support of the President of over 300 pages. Weirdly, I just realized that through all my writing, this has been the first time in my life I’ve personally gone to bat for a black man. It just happens that he’s a president. Did You Know? Rocky Mount NC This Is Why They Hate Mayor Pro-tem/President NAACP Rev. Andre Knight

Did you know that Andre Knight purchased one of the most prestigious homes in Rocky Mount located on Falls Road? This 2 story mansion was owned by a white man by the name of Henry Gregory who was a big time banker.

Knight was in his early 30’s when he purchased it to be able to provide a place for those who attended Adult Care Services could have some where to go during the day to get out of the Adult Homes that they lived in. The home was going to be used for recreation and a place for those who lives in an Adult Home. However after consulting with some town officials ie: planning board and others, he thought he was going to be able to open the home to provide the service. But after going before the planning board and etc. Knight was denied.

Knight still has the home, one that he has never lived in. During the flood he allowed some groups from out of town to live there while they helped with the clean up. Several folks have had their weddings, family reunions and etc. either in the beautiful home or out in the beautiful yard.

Knight, Carol Batchelor, Lewis Turner, a couple of others and myself started a group called North Eastern NC Committee on the Affairs of Black People whereby we worked on community issues and we acted as a resource to folks who were displaced in the flood. We held a meeting at Truth Tabernacle years ago whereby we invited some Rocky Mount City Officials to talk about the high utility bills and during that meeting is when we found out about the ElectriCities deal that had been somewhat a secret.

During the time of the saga about the Adult Day Care Center, Knight taught G.E.D. at Edgecombe Community College. I told him that they were going to fire him because he was raising too much hell. Because he was raising hell with the planning board and the Rocky Mount City Council, he was evaluated twice in one year and then fired.

Some folks white and black just can’t understand how a young black man in his early 30’s could purchase one of the most prestigious houses in Nash County on the corner of Falls Road and Braswell Street. Some folks think that in order for the black man to purchase property like this they have to be a drug dealer or during some kind of illegal activities. Not!

After the fight with the Rocky Mount planning board/City Council, Knight decided he would move to the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount and run for a seat on the Rocky Mount City Council. I tried to talk him out of it because I said they (black) folks ain’t going to support you because you are raising too much hell and he was taking white and black folks out of their comfort zones. White and black people were not used to a black man especially a black man in his early 30’s raising hell publicly.

Knight rented a house on Cherry Street and ran for the Ward 1 seat. He won as has been on the council for several terms now.

Knight joined the NAACP and he went on to become the president.

Knight was appointed to replace former Rocky Mount City Councilwoman Angela R. Bryant on the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA) Board, a branch of ElectriCities. Knight and one other black person serves on this board that consist of  one person from 32 cities. Knight has raised hell on the board trying to get ElectriCities to buy out the millions of dollars debt so that Rocky Mount can lower their utility bills.

Because Rev. Roosevelt Higgs a black man from Edgecombe County was jealous of the work that Knight and myself was doing in Rocky Mount via the NAACP and the Edgecombe County Democratic Party where Knight also became the 1st vice chair of the county party. But this was during the time when Jerry Fisher and Mark Bowling was on WHIG-TV every morning trying to discredit Knight saying he didn’t live in Edgecombe County, that it was a conflict of interest for him to serve on the Rocky Mount City Council and to serve as the President of the NAACP. Higgs teamed up with the good ole boys, Fisher, Bowling, WHIG-TV and Kenneth Pledger who teamed up with the Edgecombe County Board of Elections one Democrat and one Republican who ruled against Knight. Knight was removed from the council for about a week or two but he was given a stay so he was able to return back to the board until the Edgecombe County Board of Elections held a hearing. The NC State Board of Elections ruled in favor of the Edgecombe County Board of Elections that Knight didn’t live in Edgecombe County. But Knight appealed to the NC Court of Appeals and he won the case. Edgecombe County had to pay Knight’s attorney fees.

But they haven’t stopped yet trying to discredit Knight and to remove him from the city council. Knight continues to get re-elected even with several people seeking to replace him over the years.

Now a facebook group Fighting Crime and Cleaning Up Rocky Mount has teamed up with WHIG-TV and they are promoting WHIG-TV video of a city council meeting where they said Knight called Lige Daughtridge  (white male) President of The Community Council a racist. Knight said to him that he felt that the only reason that he didn’t support the event center was because the Rocky Mount City Council is a 4-3 black majority and because the city manager is black. How in the hell is that calling Lige a racist? Maybe my ignant ass is missing something. The Andre Knight that I know would have called Lige a racist point blank if he wanted to because he ain’t afraid to say what he mean and mean what he say.

Fighting Crime and Cleaning Up Rocky Mount started a petition asking Knight to resign from the Rocky Mount City Council and if he didn’t they are asking for signatures to remove him. Knight is not going to step down and they are misleading folks to sign their signature because he can not be removed by signatures. He can only be removed if he moves out of the Ward or he is charged with a felony.

I discovered a couple of days ago there is yet another facebook page called The Observers who are targeting Knight trying to discredit him.

Folks it is not about the Event Center but all about trying to remove Mayor Pro-tem Andre Knight from the Rocky Mount City. He has been harassed and publicly lynched over and over again since he has been on the Rocky Mount City Council. Ignant Racist Ass White Folks and Ignant Safe Negroes have teamed up in some cases trying to remove Knight from the city council but they have been unsuccessful. These ignants continue to lie on Knight in an attempt to paint a picture of Knight as if he is a terriost and/or some black man who is out of control. They use all kinds of code words when going after Knight because they really want to call him the n-word.

But Knight is not the ignant one here. He is a graduate of North Carolina Central University and is a successful businessman. If these ignants will publicly lynch Knight a powerful intelligent black man, what in the hell do you think they will do to your children. They are always talking about the young folks leave and do not come back to the area. Why in the hell would they want to come back when they see how intelligent educated black folks are treated.

Black folks and conscious white folks that are friends with Fighting Crime and Cleaning Up Rocky Mount and The Observers, have you noticed that the owners of the pages are not named and you don’t know who you are dealing with but you have to use your name in order to be friends with them on their page? That ain’t right!
