‘My People Built This Country’: Massachusetts Principal Fights Back After Receiving Backlash for Condemning Display of Confederate Flag In School

A western Massachusetts community has rallied around the principal of a local middle school after he was criticized for condemning the display of the Confederate flag in school.

Desmond Caldwell, principal of JFK Middle School in Northampton, Massachusetts, addressed a supportive crowd of about 200 people who gathered outside of the school building on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

“Students should come to school and feel safe,” he said. “Freedom of speech doesn’t mean we get to harm other people.”

House passes $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill with $1,400 checks, vaccine funding

WASHINGTON — The House voted early Saturday to pass President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief package, a step to implementing his vision for bringing the pandemic under control just days after the U.S. crossed the tragic milestone of 500,000 deaths.

The Democratic-controlled House voted 219 to 212 to approve the bill, which includes $1,400 direct payments, a $400-a-week federal unemployment bonus, a per-child allowance of up to $3,600 for one year and billions of dollars to distribute the coronavirus vaccines and to assist schools and local governments.

The vote split largely on partisan lines, with every Republican voting against the measure and just two Democrats joining them — Jared Golden of Maine and Kurt Schrader of Oregon.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where a provision to raise the minimum wage is likely to be removed. But the rest of the package is in good shape to pass as Democrats are using a process that doesn’t require Republican support.

If enacted, it would be the sixth round of aid from the federal government. The economy is still reeling from widespread shutdowns, and most Americans continue to wait their turns to be vaccinated. Democratic leaders want the bill to become law by March 14, when jobless benefits expire.

“Tonight, Congress is taking action to crush the virus,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said on the House floor, calling the legislation “transformative” at mitigating poverty. “We are putting money in workers’ pockets… As President Biden has said, help is on the way.”

Mayor says Suddenlink responding to complaints

Mayor Sandy Roberson told the Telegram a Suddenlink governmental affairs liaison has reached out to him and expressed the cable and internet service provider’s willingness to try to do better in the local marketplace from a service and cost perspective.

Roberson said the liaison told him, “This is not who we are or what we’re about.”

Roberson said he explained to the liaison the challenges and the anecdotal complaints he was hearing.

“And to her credit, I mean, she has followed up or has created a follow-up to all the complaints that we have filtered through,” he said over the phone on Thursday.

He said that while he does not have at hand the precise number of complaints to him and his staff, he believes probably somewhere around 15 to 20 have been flowed to the liaison.

And he said Suddenlink was quick to respond.

“So it appears that they are trying to put — at least from my perspective — trying to put their money where their mouth is and improve the services and improve the whole experience,” he said.

During a Jan. 11 City Council regular meeting, Councilman Andre Knight told his fellow council members a problem is that many people who have been working in their homes for safety reasons due to the coronavirus pandemic have been experiencing instances of internet service going down. Knight cited what he called “exorbitant rates and fees” and long wait times after customers ask Suddenlink to provide technical support.

Knight also said some areas still lack access to the internet.

More recently, the Telegram reported Suddenlink was officially put on notice by the State of North Carolina after numerous complaints about poor customer service.

Suddenlink has a service area covering a substantial part of eastern North Carolina. The complaints about the company have been amplified by letters from mayors of numerous municipalities in the region, including Rocky Mount.

State Assistant Attorney General Tracy Nayer on Jan. 29 wrote a letter to Dexter Goei, who is the CEO of Suddenlink’s parent company, Altice USA, requesting an urgent meeting about issues with high-speed internet service. The Telegram on Thursday emailed Laura Brewer, communications director for state Attorney General Josh Stein, with questions seeking an update.
