Judges: No special elections for redrawn NC districts – WITN

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Federal judges have rejected a request to hold special elections next March in state legislative districts once new lines are drawn to eliminate illegal racial gerrymandering.

The three-judge panel issued its order late Monday. It means the next General Assembly elections won’t occur until November 2018.

But the judges did tell Republican lawmakers that they’ll have to approve new House and Senate boundaries by this September – at least two months earlier than the time GOP leaders sought. (Read more)

I watched it and it was sad but real. I think we think some things are impossible. However I wonder how many folk think that this could not be them one day. We are not our mind keeper and therefore something can trigger us to do some things out of the norm at any minute.

I think what would be good with this story is to start at her beginning child hood to see what she went through all the way up til the time she just couldn’t take it anymore and just gave up.

I wonder how many folk tried to reach out to her when she began to take a turn in her life. I think that if we all are honest especially most folk, sometimes we have come to the point that we wanted to give up on some things but then we snapped out of it.

I think we could look at the facts as presented from what I read last night in the article and then after looking at the show this morning, I remembered what I read last night.

We have got to start being proactive and not always reactive when we see things going different with our family and friends. We may not be able to change their turn but we sure can say we tried.

Rocky Mount NC – The Rocky Mount Telegram, Fighting Crime, WHIG-TV & The Community Council Do They Really Care About Unifying Rocky Mount Or Do They Just Want Black Folk To Sit Down And Shut Up?

The system is set up so that black folk are scared to speak out even when they are hurting. When you hurt me I am going to let you know. When you hurt other folk and I can see for myself what is going on, I hurt then too. I refuse to be silent on issues that affect folk as a whole.

I look at all of these media outlets and social media sites how they single out certain folk. But most of all I look at the comments and who are not afraid to speak out. Them white folk ain’t scared.

Look at what black folk being speaking out about on social media. Just damn scared until it hit home.

Right now there are 2 things going on on social media that is dear to me, I said to me because I know some of the folk or have been contacted by some of the folk.

In Sharpsburg there is discussion on 252 Hoodnews about black folk (women/young folk) cars being towed that don’t need to be towed when the Sharpsburg Police Department call a local wrecker to get the cars. If the folk don’t pay the money to get cars back they get to sell them. I have been told and it has been stated that when the folk ask to let their cars sit there and they come back to get it or to request to call their own wrecker, they have been denied.

Today in the paper and all those I named above are going after Councilman Andre Knight. Look at the comments who are saying what. Black folk are scared to comment.

Now I understand some black folk are scared to comment because they are scared of retaliation. Well just know that when your time comes, you may need some folk to help you while you were silent while it was happening to others.

This pisses me the hell off because I refuse to be silent. I can’t understand how folk sit back and allow injustice to take place and say nothing.

I will not sit down and shut up even if you come after me. I will stand until the end.

I ain’t mad with nobody, however I will not allow you to promote mess that ain’t right. Tell the whole story!

Rocky Mount NC – Property purchased near event center site raises questions – Rocky Mount Telegram

The Watch Dog response: Damn this is too funny. An immediate family member? Really? Why not just say his mother? Then you call his mother a proxy as if she is not competent to do business. This paper says purchase was $10.00 but WHIG-TV report of the actual document shows $2,000. Wow! So where did The Telegram get their info.? This paper said, “Knight attempted to sell the church property to the city, according to a source within city government who asked not to be identified.” Really? If the city purchased it then they would demolish it so that makes no sense. I bet if the Knight’s sold it that they would make the city move it for historical purposes. Why do you say that Knight needed have to recused himself from voting on the Event Center? This paper says, “The dilapidated church building is the only structure for two city blocks, surrounded by city-owned property with ongoing work to grade what will be the parking lot of the event center.” But I find it interesting St. John AME was not mentioned they did not sell out and still standing only a few 100 feet away from Holy Hope.“ Read more Rocky Mount NC – If This Is Corruption, Then Let’s Go Back And Look At All The White Politicians That Have Acquired Stuff And Let’s Talk About Everybody.”

An immediate family member of a Rocky Mount city councilman purchased property at the location of the Downtown Event Center while the council was still deciding the site of the future facility.

Councilman Andre Knight used a proxy to buy the land and church building at 202 Ivy St. for $10 on May 20, 2015. The property was valued at $30,000 during the recent property revaluation.

The council was deciding in closed session meetings at the time the church was purchased where the multi-million dollar event center would be located, according to a comparison of deeds, tax records, council meeting minutes and archived news reports.

“Are you crazy?” Knight responded to Telegram questions whether he had the property purchased as part of a real estate speculation scheme. (Read more)

Rocky Mount NC – If This Is Corruption, Then Let’s Go Back And Look At All The White Politicians That Have Acquired Stuff And Let’s Talk About Everybody

Sparks anger by who? Who angry? Damn acquiring of the property is public so what makes this corruption? If it is hell I am for justice no matter who it is for or against.

You know what tickles the hell out of me is that when black folk do stuff that is good such as acquiring property, some white folk can’t get the hell over it.

I remember back in the day when I said in meetings that while we as black folk were fighting to get control of the Democratic Party and elected offices in Edgecombe County I said what are black folk doing and going to do to help Edgecombe County become a better place to live, work and play. I seen white elected officials acquiring property and stuff and that is okay. Hey I was not mad with them because they had the power to do stuff. What damn good is having the power and not using it as long as it is not illegal and/or hurting someone?

It is funny how all of these white folk have sat on the various boards over the years and acquired property but ain’t nothing been said. ElectriCities come to mind also as it was a former mayor and others who played a major role in making that happen.

It is a damn shame that some black folk and some white folk are still mad as hell because a young black man by the name of Andre’ Knight purchased the white man’s property the old Henry Gregory house on Fall’s Road. Because they gave him hell, he was smart enough to run for city council so he could do some things. Because he moved to Edgecombe County and have several properties and business on Nash side some can’t take it. But it is okay for white folk and other folk to live on the Nash side and have property on the Edgecombe County side.

The sad part is when we have ignant ass black folk like the black man in Edgecombe County that was used by several folk to attempt to remove Knight from the city council but it didn’t work. The county ended up getting sued and had to pay Knight’s attorney fees.

What in the hell do folk want, you talk about black on black crime as if white crime doesn’t exist and other negatives that connect to black folk but then when you have a young black man trying to help make Edgecombe and Nash County a better place to live work and play, he has to work against some white folk and ignant safe black folk that are always trying to discredit him. So why should young black males and others attempt to do good when it does not matter what they do, it ain’t going to be good enough?

Read the following Rocky Mount NC – Andre Knight Give Holy Hope Episcopal Church Briefing to learn more about the property that Elizabeth Knight purchased. Yes she just happens to be Andre’ Knight’s mother. So because he is on the council his family can’t purchase stuff?

Hell let’s look at all of the council members and boards over the years and see what has been acquired.

I be glad when one day black folk that say they are about what is right, just and fair will say enough is enough and speak out against the white folk and ignant safe black folk who don’t want to see black folk have anything.

Funny how the following group call themselves the Community Council close to the Rocky Mount City Council are always trying to discredit the city council. I have not seen them talk about white issues but maybe I missed them. Oh but maybe there are none. I know that is a damn lie because we can begin with the media.

Sweep targets guns, drugs – Rocky Mount Telegram (When The Head Is Involved Out In The Community That Is A Good Thing)

The Watch Dog response: So what is wrong with this article? Look at the photo, why does it have to always be black folk as the star? That photo didn’t deal with guns or drugs unlike the other photo that was not that of a black man that was being given a breath test. Most folk would say nothing ain’t nothing wrong with the article or the photo but I also question why was the Chief James Moore not quoted? I wonder was he on the street with the others as all of this unfolded because this was within the city limits of Rocky Mount. Now I have spoke up in defense of Chief Moore about the quote that continue to be repeated by others that he said Rocky Mount didn’t have a problem with drugs and gangs. However I just read some comments on 252 Hood News this week where folk were talking about Chief Moore. I am beginning to wonder just what role does the Chief play into reaching out to community about the crime problem in Rocky Mount. Now don’t get it twisted because I am not saying that the Chief can stop the crime, I am just saying is he on the street and in touch with the community so that they will trust him to help solve crime. In other words I wonder what kind of relationship does he have with the community.

All hands were on deck Thursday evening in Rocky Mount for a joint law enforcement sweep to get guns off the city’s streets.

Twin Counties law enforcement agencies including the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Mount Police Department, Tarboro Police Department and Pinetops Police Department teamed up with the N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement and the State Bureau of Investigation for a sweep of Rocky Mount dubbed Operation All Hands on Deck.

Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinston said planning for Thursday’s sweep started only a week ago but many agencies came on board quickly to make the operation a success. Atkinson thanked Rocky Mount Police Chief James Moore for offering his department’s officers to the operation.

“When I asked for that help, Chief Moore did not hesitate to help,” Atkinson said. (Read more)

The Following Photo Speaks Volume

image

I look at things that folk comment on on social media and it just tickles me. They pick and choose certain articles to comment on because they are scared how others are going to look at them and/or they can not take the criticism that may come with it. If you are scared, say it and get somewhere and sit down.

There are things going on and folk are silent but they always talking about change. They are quick to talk about what elected officials are not doing but they don’t call them out by name. Hell most of the time they don’t even know what they are saying when they attempt to call them out because they don’t know the role of the elected official. Educate yourself before you speak out.

I have come to the conclusion that I have maxed out in going to meetings because some folk want to just hear themselves talk but don’t want to get to the route of the problem. You see they want to say all of these pretty words that sound good when we are fighting a nasty mess. You got to put on your dirty clothes so you can fight. Many folk in meetings that I attend and or the talk on social media act as if they have figured something out when the same issues I have been dealing with since the late 80’s still exist. Why? Because folk don’t want to stand up and talk about real issues so therefore the same issues come and go. It takes all of us to get rid of mess but that is hard to do because folk are scared. Those scared folk are the ones that have the most mouth but scare to call a spade a spade. They look for others to do the work and then they come to the table when the cameras arrive.

This photo speaks volume. So many folk say they love Dr. King. Hell they say that now because he is dead. Where were they when he was alive and fighting for their ass? Oh they were silent! And then some today don’t even appreciate all that he done because they think they have arrived.

If you didn’t know everyone has a role to play and it begins with you.

Sharpsburg NC – Folk In Sharpsburg You Need To Talk To These Folk Running For Office Because It Appears Ya’ll Have Some Serious Issues Going On

Now is the time to get involved and talk to these candidates that are running. I know Linda Virgil a former councilwoman and I know she is a fighter and sincere about helping folk. She want what is best for all folk. I know Rev. Maurice Garrett and don’t know how actively engage he has been in politics but I would think he would do what is right. I have heard of Robert Williams Jr. and if I am correct he has been a commissioner or has ran in a previous election. But you the citizens of Sharpsburg need to find out for yourself who these folk are and what they will bring to the table.

Rocky Mount NC – Andre Knight Give Holy Hope Episcopal Church Briefing

Background and Historical Significance

Holy Hope Episcopal Church (originally named St. Jude’s Church) was completed on August 6, 1916 for a white congregation in Spring Hope, Nash County. It is a replica of the original Church of the Good Shepherd in Rocky Mount and was designed by the Rector of Good Shepherd; Rev. Robert B. Owens. Holy Hope began as a mission to black people in Rocky Mount with the permission of the Trustees of the Diocese under the leadership of Rev. Owens. Several years later, the St. Jude’s congregation disbanded. The then-abandoned St. Jude’s Church was disassembled in Spring Hope, moved to Rocky Mount and reassembled in 1939. Several African American Rocky Mount families founded the church as Holy Hope Episcopal Church. As such, Holy Hope became Rocky Mount’s first African American Episcopal Church.

The area where it is located today is now designated as the Rocky Mount Central City Historic District. The Central City Historic District is a nationally designated historic district and encompasses both Edgecombe and Nash portions of Downtown Rocky Mount. This historic district includes 166 contributing structures in central Rocky Mount and includes a variety of industrial, commercial, residential and institutional buildings dating from the late-19th through mid-20th centuries. Holy Hope is one of those notable buildings.

The late Anna Easter Brown, a founding member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the nation’s first African American sorority, was a member of Rocky Mount’s Chi Omega Chapter, lived one block away from the current location of Holy Hope, taught at the former Booker T. Washington High School (approximately five blocks from the current location) and was an active member of the Holy Hope Episcopal Church.

Why the Knight Family Purchased

Holy Hope After several conversations over several months with City Staff, it was evident that the City had neither funds nor plans for acquiring the former church. The staff was clear with the City Council that they planned to demolish the structure. In the meantime, the owner of the church property reached out to Andre’ Knight for help in selling the structure. The property owner was interested in transferring the property to someone that she knew would value the history and legacy that the church represented. The property was purchased by Mrs. Virginia Knight, who still retains ownership today.

Andre’ Knight, in his role as City Council representative, led the effort to erect the local historical marker for Anna Easter Brown’s home; the local marker for the home of Dr. Douglas, the founder of the Douglas Block; the local marker for the Lincoln Park Hotel on Leggett Road; and the soon to be erected local marker for Thelonious Monk off South Washington Street. Mr. Knight has also been entrusted with the writings and collections of the late J. B. Harren, notable African American Rocky Mount historian, avid member of the NAACP and a founder of OIC in Rocky Mount. Proposed

Property Reuse Strategies/Options

Holy Hope has been a notable and majestic structure in the footprint of Downtown Rocky Mount since 1939. For that reason, the Knight Family plans to renovate and restore the property for use as an African American Museum of History to commemorate the tremendous accomplishments, achievements and contributions that black people have made to eastern North Carolina and the world. A committee is being assembled to:

    1. Raise funds for historic restoration and renovation of the Holy Hope church structure;

    2. Archive and display existing African American collections and memorabilia;

    3. Recruit additional collections and memorabilia from area residents and their families and friends here and abroad;

    4. Connect our eastern NC collections to other national and international collections, displays and historical societies;

    5. Manage the historic renovation process;

    6. Communicate and establish collaborations with the City of Rocky Mount and other appropriate entities; and

    7. Determine next steps in embedding Holy Hope and the eastern NC African American Museum of History in the life and fabric of the growing and vibrant Rocky Mount region.

Andre’ Knight stated that “African American history in Rocky Mount and the Twin Counties has been overlooked, destroyed and devalued. This project has as much history as the former confederate-owned Rocky Mount Mills that now has new owners and investors with fresh, energetic, contemporary and inclusive vision, the Helen P. Gay Historic Train Station, the May and Gorham Building and the Douglas Block. The Holy Hope Church project is as vibrant, exciting and significant as any other historical development taking place in Downtown Rocky Mount.”

Na’im Akbar Hosted The Your Morning With Yolanda Show And JMarcel Reborn Was His Special Guest

Saturday morning 9:00 – 9:30
Na’im Akbar and JMarcel Reborn on Your Morning with Yolanda (Yolanda Thigpen) Show talking about the 100 Men Strong group that was founded by JMarcel Reborn. The show is on AM 760 and FM 105.7 til 9:30.

My feelings about the state of boys and men and has been since the 90’s when the conversation first began about at-risk males is it is about all males. I said back then all males were at-risk.

Mentoring for young boys. Well what we need to do is to stop labeling young boys who do not have 2 parents in the home and saying they are at-risk because of this and that especially their behavior. Well all young boys are at-risk because some in 2 parent homes go astray. Actually it ain’t just young boys it is all males the young and the old. Boys and men all need some positive God fearing men that they can go to when they are going through.

We must hear from the boys & men and not just tell them. We can’t help each other if we don’t let each of us tell our own story. You see you don’t know my story until I tell you.

Congressman Butterfield Announces New Stops on Jobs & Justice Tour

Dear Friends,

At 2am on Friday, three Republican senators joined with all Democratic senators in blocking passage of the latest Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act.  This version of Trumpcare, had it become law, would have resulted in an estimated 16 million Americans losing health insurance.  Today, it appears that the repeal effort is dead- for now.

However, we must remain vigilant in the fight to protect the progress made under the Affordable Care Act.  In Congress, I will continue to strongly urge Republicans to engage in “regular order” to have bipartisan hearings on solutions that will stabilize the insurance markets and lower premiums.  Working together, we can certainly achieve this outcome.

In August, I am launching new stops on my Jobs & Justice Tour to talk with you about the future of healthcare, jobs, and education.  Click here to get more information about the stops and register to attend one near you!

Daily Reflector: Burr, Tillis vote for Senate health care debate; Butterfield says it’s not about health care

“Each vote cast today to put Trumpcare on the Floor is a vote to jeopardize the health care of millions of families,” said U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield. “It is a total disappointment that, rather than put politics aside and work in a bipartisan fashion to bring down costs and ensure more Americans have access to care, Republicans eagerly continue to push a plan that will weaken our economy, leave working Americans with higher medical costs, and jeopardize care for up to half a million North Carolinians who gained coverage since the Affordable Care Act was implemented,” Butterfield said in a news release.

Charleston Chronicles: NNPA Pushes For Report On Federal Ad Spending

The agency found that just five percent of the $4.3 billion available for advertising campaigns went to minority-owned businesses. Thirty-one of Norton’s colleagues in Congress signed the letter, including CBC Chair Cedric Richmond (D-La.) and legendary congressmen John Lewis (D-Ga.), Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), and former CBC Chair G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.).

Durham Herald Sun: What you’re saying: Betsy Crites, John Kramer, Bob Vasile

Your July 15 “Briefly” section skimmed over one of the most consequential Congressional acts in years: the authorization of $696 billion for the military in 2018. This sum not only exceeds President Trump’s requested spending spike, but blows past limits set by the 2011 Budget Control Act. In North Carolina, U.S. Reps. G.K. Butterfield, David Price, and Alma Adams deserve praise for voting against this budget-buster.

Tarboro NC – The Tarboro Town Mayor & Town Council Ward 7 Appointees Have Opposition Along With Town Council Ward 1 In The Upcoming Municipal Election

Joseph Pitt was appointed Mayor of Tarboro after the former mayor resigned. Al Braxton former policeman is seeking to replace Joe Pitt. I can’t wait to see what Braxton is going to campaign on.

Wow! Carl Benson is challenging Othar Woodard in Ward 1. That would be a disgrace because Benson used to be on Tarboro 27886 showing just how racist he was. If I am correct he was kicked off.

Sabrina Bynum Pettaway Ward 7 was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Taro Knight. Rev. Roy Gray Sr. and Quincy Robinson are seeking to replace Ward 7. I wonder did these guys sit down with Sabrina and talk to her about the seat? I can’t wait to see what these guys are going to campaign on.

Makes no damn sense that the Edgecombe County Democratic Party did not talk about the upcoming municipal elections to see if all the seats up that the party tried to encourage some Democrats to seek the seats. There is no reason why these Republicans do not have any opposition unless no one would step forward.

Sweep targets guns, drugs – Rocky Mount Telegram

The Watch Dog response: Sheriff Clee Atkinson Edgecombe County has been actively engaged in the community along with working in house since being appointed in March. Sources say he has been doing some good things on the inside of the office as well as in the community. Let’s continue to support him as he continue to protect and serve the citizens of Edgecombe County but not limited to.

(Read more)

Princeville NC – Mayor Bobbie Jones Has 3 Candidates Challenging Him During Upcoming Election

Milton Bullock current Town Commissioner is challenging Mayor Bobbie Jones. But they are not the only ones seeking the mayoral seat Theresa Williams and Yolanda Thigpen has filed to run as well.

So obviously these candidates challenging Mayor Jones don’t feel like he has done a good job because I can’t think of any reason for them to run. It will be interesting to hear what the candidates have to say about what they will do differently if they became mayor.

Pamela Ransome current Town Commissioner Ward 4 is not seeking re-election. Calvin Sherrod former Town Commissioner is seeking to get his seat back. However Dr. Glenda Knight will be seeking to the seat as well. This will be quite interesting and should be a heated race.
