“You don’t call the police on poverty…that’s exactly how Black lives become hashtags.”

I arrived at the Durham Co-op Market Monday morning January 02, 2017 for coffee and to finish some writing. As I approached the market’s front door, a middle-aged Black man standing on the side of the building, stopped me and asked for “spare change.”

Little did he know, I was four days from ‘pay day’ and had absolutely no money. I was living on a credit card for the next four days. I told him I was “out of cash” and kept walking.

As I entered the sliding glass doors, one of the cashiers asked, “Is that man still out there asking for money?” I said “Yes. But he’s not posing a threat to anyone. He’s just standing on the side and asking for spare change.” She then informed me that she had already spoken with him once that morning and that the manager had instructed her to call the police. …A Winter Weather Advisory for hazardous travel conditions is in effect until noon EST Tuesday…

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for hazardous travel conditions…in effect until noon EST Tuesday.

* Location and timing…travel will remain dangerous in central

North Carolina through early next week…particularly across

portions of the northern and western Piedmont where the greatest

snow and sleet accumulations were observed.

* Impact…an elevated risk of motor vehicle accidents…injuries

and deaths due to a prolonged period of hazardous travel

conditions associated with lingering snow…sleet and ice on

area roadways.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

Unnecessary travel is discouraged…especially during the overnight hours. If you absolutely must drive…slow down…leave plenty of following distance…and exercise extreme caution…

particularly at intersections and on Highway onramps and offramps where accidents are more likely to occur.

Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee Should Meet On March 1st To Recommend A Name To Present To County Commissioners For Sheriff Appointment

Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight to retire effective February 28, 2017. The Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee should meet on March 1st or by March 5th so they can have a name to present to the county commissioners at their regular monthly meeting on March 6, 2017. The Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee consist of the county 6 officers, all precinct chairs and vice chairs along with all elected officials.

As a precinct chair I have only heard from one person who is interested in the appointment. The time is now to make it known if you are interested in the appointment.
