‘Enough to kill everyone in Nash County,’ 2 kilograms of meth, heroin laced with fentanyl seized in traffic stop

According to Sheriff Keith Stone, the interdiction task force made a traffic stop in Nash County, where they seized two kilograms of drugs.

The drugs, which were wrapped in a plastic trash bag, were seized from a black pickup truck that was stopped along U.S. Highway 264.

Deputies arrested 38-year-old Miguel Canela after the bust.

The drugs are being sent to a state lab, but early indications showed the drugs were heroin and methamphetamine, both laced with fentanyl.

Stone oversaw the preliminary testing process to see what was at the bust in this particular case.

"I’m not surprised," Stone said. "I see heroin. I see cocaine. All of it’s being laced with fentanyl now."

According to Stone, the amount of fentanyl seized was "enough to kill everyone in Nash County."

Because of the amount of fentanyl seized, Stone said the bust saved several lives.

"When you stop that drug on the highway and it does not get into the community and it doesn’t get into a family member or anybody’s hands, it’s a success," Stone said.

Canela is being held on $3 million bond and facing several drug trafficking charges. (Source)

The Community Must Support Law Enforcement & Law Enforcement & The Citizens Must Act Professional/Respectful During Traffic Stops

The following posts on a Derek Thompson Facebook page about an encounter with Nash County Sheriff Office appears to be half-trues but the real problem is the comments. It is sad that folk take one side and run with it without seeking all the facts.

I received a call about the following posts asking me what did I think. I contacted Bishop Shelton Daniels Chair of The Eastern Ministerial Alliance and he shared with me what he knew about the situation. I will not go into further detail about our conversation but to say that I told him I had received a call and was checking into it. Bishop was suppose to call me back on Monday May 16 and I have not heard from him.

I have completed my investigation and I will not share my findings at the moment. But in one of the post as it pertain to the photo of Derek and Sheriff Stone, I believe my findings from the Sheriff Office do not align with these posts. I strongly feel that there need to be some cleaning up to these series of posts so that folk can get the other side.

A couple of weeks ago during the Rocky Mount Human Relations Commission meeting new Commission member Pastor Ray Green said that the community should make it known that they support the work of Law Enforcement Agencies. He said that we need to support traffic stops as long they are legit and we will hold the LEAs accountable if they do not follow the law during the stops.

It is of my opinion that if a person is not breaking the law, a traffic stop should not be seen as a negative but about trying to get folk who may be breaking the law, driving without license, drugs and guns in the vehicle and may be wanted for a warrant that is on file.

We say we want the LEA to do something. We can’t have it both ways that when they try to do something that we are going to fight against them when they are doing their job in a professional manner. Every stop should be done in a professional manner be it LEA and the citizens.

I have a good relationship with Edgecombe County, Nash County, Wilson County and Pitt County Sheriffs.

I am for justice no matter who it is for or against. I have no permanent friends no permanent enemies only permanent interest.

Long post..

please read

I just want to speak on a subject that’s disturbing, uncomfortable and also confusing..lastnight I was leaving Hollister traveling to Spring Hope as I passed through Red Oak it was cop sitting in the Red Cafe parking lot..He pulls out and follows me and pulls me over said I was “speeding” which i wasn’t…absolutely NOT and I didn’t stop until I got to the Fisher Farm Subdivision entrance which was a well lit area..just being cautious im a African American with a loaded weapon (registered) in my car plus it’s dark..

so anyway this officer seemed irritated, attitude on 100 this whole situation felt weird but I remained respectful the entire time I would say it lasted about 30 minutes..he just kept asking why did I take this route if I was headed to Spring Hope..He literally ask this probably 10 times as if I was in the wrong part of town..it ended up being (2) Caucasian officers and (1) Black offense so back to my story..

So he asked me to step out I did,was there anything illegal, any drugs anything my reply was no sir feel free to do whatever you need to..and I’ll say this loud and clear I don’t even drink Alcohol PERIOD nor any kind of drugs tobacco so officer do what you need to do.

So next he gets the K-9 out he continues to also ask are you sure no drugs are anything is in this car NO SIR absolutely NOT..

Next he says my Dog just hinted that there was something in your car..he asked are you sure, have you been around anyone using any type of drugs or anything PERIOD my reply absolutely Not sir

(I’m thinking to my self I’m bout to go to jail this guy was clearly on a mission and the other (2) officers stood back and watched.

Anyway so after about 25-30 mins of this I was written a warning ticket for speeding not even by the officer that stopped me but one that came later on the scene

‍♂️

they didn’t find anything illegal nor was there ever anything in my car to begin with..

I don’t know what was on his agenda but God blocked it The END..God is good..#KeepPushing

Department of Justice

U.S. Attorney’s Office

Eastern District of North Carolina

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Friday, November 5, 2021

25 Individuals Charged in Rocky Mount Cigarette Smuggling and Money Laundering Operation

RALEIGH – G. Norman Acker III, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced today that on October 20, 2021, a federal grand jury sitting in the Eastern District of North Carolina returned a sealed, twelve-count indictment charging 24 individuals with a scheme to defraud the federal government, the State of North Carolina, the State of New York, the State of New Jersey, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, of millions of dollars in tax revenues from the sale of cigarettes.

This investigation is an effort to end large scale tax fraud and to hold these defendants accountable for the millions in lost tax revenue as the result of their illegal scheme.  The individuals charged are:

  • Bahjet Shaher Ahmed Dari, 58
  • Shaher Bahjat Dari, a/k/a “Boo”, 32
  • Hashem Faraj Hatu, 30
  • Tamara Delilah Richardson, 27
  • Bismillah Barak, 38
  • Khalid Naser Hizan, 23
  • Jymonica Arnez Gorham, 29
  • Adam Husam Salem, 21
  • Husam Khaled Salem, 60
  • Shelton Dewain Tenor, a/k/a “DC”, 50
  • Sierra Nicole Strickland, 28
  • Noe De Jesus Vega, 45
  • Jermaine Tyrell Underhill, 28
  • Sameer Mohammad Dari, 53
  • Ali Osama Dari, 22
  • Anastasia Chante Harrison, 29
  • Leandro Alberto De Los Angeles-Perez, 43
  • Amer Mohammed Zughbi, a/k/a “Amer Mohammad Zughbi”, 21
  • Toribio Antonio Perez, 55
  • Francisco Odalis Perez, 37
  • Jason Peralta, 22
  • Ahmad Awni Said Marzouq, 35
  • Abdulla Mohamed Aezah, 30
  • Alicia Walker, a/k/a “Alicia Mendez,” 44

The defendants were arrested yesterday and will be presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert T. Numbers today.  U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III presides over the case.

In Count One, the grand jury alleges that the 24 individuals listed in the indictment, had been engaged in a conspiracy, beginning in May of 2021 and continuing until at least the time the indictment was returned, to ship, transport, receive, possess, sell, distribute and purchase cigarettes, in quantities exceeding 10,000 cigarettes (as required by the relevant statute), which bore no evidence of the payment of applicable State or local cigarette taxes in the state and locality where they were found.  The object of the conspiracy was to profit from the purchase of cigarettes with cash in North Carolina, drive those cigarettes to the northeast, and sell them without paying the applicable sales tax.  This is all alleged to be in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2342 (a) (which prohibits the trafficking in contraband cigarettes and smokeless tobacco) and Title 18, United States Code, Section 371, the general conspiracy statute.

It is alleged in the indictment that members of the conspiracy would repeatedly purchase large quantities of cigarettes from wholesale cigarette outlets in Rocky Mount and Wilson, and then transport those quantities of cigarettes to storage locations for future shipment to Virginia, New Jersey, and New York.  After purchasing the cigarettes from the wholesalers, members of the conspiracy would then prepare for transporting the cigarettes to the northeast by using large vehicles and cross into the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Counts Two through Eight allege seven specific instances where the individual(s) named in those counts (and who were part of the conspiracy charged in Count One) knowingly shipped, transported, received, possessed, or aided and abetted contraband cigarettes (in amounts greater than 10,000) which bore no evidence of the payment of applicable state cigarette taxes in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Each of these instances is alleged to be in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2342(a), as well.

Count Nine alleges that all 24 defendants were engaged in a conspiracy to launder money in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1956(h).  In this count, the grand jury alleges that members of the conspiracy (a) conducted and attempted to conduct financial transaction affecting interstate commerce which involved the proceeds of specified unlawful activity, that is, cigarette trafficking, with the intent to further the goals of that crime, and that they knew that the property involved in the crime was in fact the proceeds of some form of unlawful activity; and (b) that while they conducted or attempted to conduct the specified unlawful activity – again, cigarette trafficking –the transactions were designed in whole or in part to conceal and disguise the nature, location, source, ownership and control of the proceeds of the unlawful activity.  So, in sum, the money laundering conspiracy count alleges that the members of the conspiracy were trying to either further the goals of the crime or to conceal the crime by using the proceeds of the crime in some way or do both those things.

Count Ten alleges that Shaher Bahjat Dari, a/k/a “Boo Boo,” an alien illegally and unlawfully in the United States, possessed a firearm and ammunition.

Count Eleven alleges that Shaher Bahjat Dari, a/k/a “Boo Boo,” possessed with intent to distribute more than fifty (50) kilograms of marijuana.

Count Twelve alleges that Tamara Delilah Richardson possessed with intent to distribute a quantity of marijuana.

If convicted of Count One, the general conspiracy to traffic in contraband cigarettes, each defendant faces up to five years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000 or both. If convicted of Counts Two through Eight, each defendant named therein faces up to five years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000. If the defendants are convicted of money laundering as alleged in Count Nine, they each face up to 20 years imprisonment, a $500,000 fine or twice the value of the property involved in the transaction, whichever is greater, or both. In Count Ten, the defendant faces up to 10 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine or both. In Count Eleven, the defendant faces up to 20 years imprisonment, $250,000 fine or both. In Count Twelve, the defendant faces up to 5 years imprisonment, $250,000 fine or both.

In addition, the grand jury included a forfeiture notice in the indictment.  That section of the indictment provides notice to each defendant that the items of property listed in that notice, and any other property which is the proceeds of or involved in the crime, is forfeitable to the United States.  The forfeiture notice includes approximately 10,000 cartons of cigarettes, $440,000 in U.S. currency and vehicles that were seized during the investigation.

Further, on November 5, 2021, Wasim Bahgat Dari, 30, will be presented for an initial appearance based on a criminal complaint filed today charging him with trafficking in contraband cigarettes, conspiracy to traffic in contraband cigarettes and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

G. Norman Acker, III, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina said “North Carolina continues to be a target for cigarette trafficking organizations to take advantage of North Carolina as a source of supply of untaxed cigarettes. Any criminal activity that primarily conducts its illicit business with bulk cash, is susceptible to violent crimes occurring in those communities, can attract sophisticated and organized criminal groups, and could be a source of funding for terrorists.  This office will continue to aggressively prosecute those organizations that are travelling to or are operating in the Eastern District.”

“Dari’s scheme to launder money and sell contraband cigarettes has gone up in smoke and he will have to answer for his crimes,” said Special Agent In Charge Ronnie Martinez, who oversees Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) operations in North Carolina and South Carolina. “Disrupting and dismantling criminal organizations is a priority for HSI and we will continue to find, arrest and prosecute these criminals.”

“Yesterday morning, Deputy United States Marshals from the Eastern District of North Carolina, and the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force assisted Homeland Security Investigators, Nash County Sheriff’s Office Detectives and other state and local law enforcement officers in the simultaneous arrest of 22 individuals on federal charges.  The coordinated arrests occurred in Nash County and surrounding areas, as well as in NY, FL & PA,” commented United States Marshal Michael East.  “The arrests were the culmination of extensive investigative work by HSI, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.  The United States Marshals Service is always willing to assist our federal, state and local partners in the apprehension of criminal suspects and fugitives.”

Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone stated, “This is a perfect example of well-trained law enforcement officers partnering with federal authorities for safer communities. With this case, it’s more than drug cigarette smuggling, it includes acts of violence. This is just another example of organized crime.”

"Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office prides itself on working with federal, state and, local partnerships to ensure our county and surrounding areas are safe and we will continue that relationship," commented Sheriff Clee Atkinson.

This case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, United States Marshals Service, and the Henrico County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office.

Related court documents and information are located on the website of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina or on PACER by searching for Case No. 5:21-CR-394.

An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Nash County Commissioner Chair Robbie B. Davis Need To Resign

It is sad the Nash County Chair Robbie B. Davis posted a comment on the Nash County Sheriff Office Facebook page in response to Sheriff Steve Stone Office arresting Elaine Fields Finkley after she had absconded from their E.M.P.A.C.T. (Electronic Monitoring Protection and Crime Tracking) system.

Robbie’s comment was, “They were able to find her because of the Vaccine Shot.”

It is a damn shame that when folk are finding all kinds of excuses to not take the vaccine shot that he would make that statement. But on top of being a public official he oversees the Sheriff Office. Well we all know it is a fact that he gave Sheriff Keith Stone hell when he was trying to get more funding to repair the Nash County Jail. He went as far as to limit the Sheriff spending power until he finally lifted the limit.

The post said, “The Nash County Sheriff’s Office tracked Finkley to Charlotte, NC where she fled after she cut off her ankle monitor. Deputies of the NCSO found Finkley and a companion walking down the street and approached Finkley and her companion.”

The post goes on to say, “A special thank you to Wake County Sheriff Gerald M. Baker and the tremendous assistance by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office CAAT Team.”

But I believe that Robbie could have spoken to Sheriff Stone and asked him for more specifics instead of putting out information that may not be true as to how they found her.

Because I know Robbie it is my ignant opinion that Robbie’s response is racist because during this time some places are giving out vaccine shots and one could receive a cash reward.

Some folk took Robbie’s response as a joke but I find it offensive since she is a Black female and also as a jab at Sheriff Keith Stone. Sheriff Stone and his Office do not need to have to continue to put up with this guy’s unwarranted and definitely not needed criticism.

How much more are the citizens of Nash County going to allow Robbie B. Davis to get away with?

I’ll wait!

Two men missing from Aventon area located after wrecking vehicle

On Saturday 05-29-2021, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office was contacted about two men who had been missing for several days and were last seen together. Both men had not been seen since Tuesday evening on May 25th in the Aventon area of Nash County. They were last seen operating a yellow in color, Chevrolet Cobalt.

Members of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division began working on this case over the holiday weekend and worked diligently following up on leads and possible sightings throughout this week. Members canvased the Aventon area of Nash County, and several areas in Halifax County including Medoc Mountain, Hollister, Ringwood and Roanoke Rapids following those leads.

Today on Thursday June 3, 2021, members of the Nash County Sheriffs’ Office were continuing to follow up on those leads when they began canvasing the West Hilliardston Road area, Swift Creek School Road area, and Ward Road area, after receiving further follow-up information from cellphone records. A member of the Sheriff’s Office, while searching the area, discovered the victim’s vehicle approximately 30 yards off the roadway on Ward Road near the Halifax County line. The vehicle was covered by heavy brush and was difficult to see from the roadway. After locating the vehicle, members of the Sheriff’s Office discovered the two missing victims deceased at the wreck scene. Based on preliminary information from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and evidence at the scene, it appears the victims ran off the roadway in a curve, lost control and their vehicle overturned in a heavily brushy area, making it difficult for vehicles passing by to see.

This is not the ending that everyone had hoped for, but we pray for the families of both of these men, that they can now have some type of closure. Any further information related to the motor vehicle accident investigation, should be directed to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Public Announcement: Nash County Sheriff’s Office Community Forum

The Nash County Sheriff’s Office is holding a “NCSO Community Forum” on Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 11am-1pm at the Nash Community College. The event will be held at the Brown Auditorium.

The event is being held to continue to address the questions many have had about the recent events involving Law Enforcement around the country, how persons should react when dealing with Law Enforcement and what actions to take when you feel you have been treated unfairly. The goal is to further the positive relationships that Nash County and local law enforcement has with our citizens and others that we serve.

We will have a Paneled Forum with Law Enforcement, Educators, FBO’s and community leaders. We will have an Audience Q&A Session. We will also, have different scenarios and vehicles set up inside the auditorium to show different types of interactions involving civilians and law enforcement.

We are asking all of Nash and the surrounding areas to come out and be a part of this pivotal moment.

Regional task force in works as departments await grant – Rocky Mount Telegram

“The task force would not be a specialized assignment for officers in each agency, but instead a collaboration of manpower working to utilize shared databases and undercover operations to prosecute suspects plaguing communities throughout the area. Contrary to some rumors, Wooten said the task force would not utilize interdiction on the highways.”

So this make it appear that the agencies are not collaborating now.

So now after several news articles “interdiction” is a rumor. So funny how this didn’t come out earlier. It is my opinion that “they” are trying to discredit the Rocky Mount Chief of Police.

But why so many news articles about this?

I find it interesting that none of the other agencies are quoted in the articles. I find the following to be quite interesting. Verbal agreements? Something of this magnitude should be in writing since it is about a grant. But this is just my ignant opinion.

“So far, Wooten said they’ve reached verbal cooperation agreements with police in Tarboro, Nashville and Wilson along with several other state and federal agencies. He said the memorandums of understandings would be formalized in January and officials are working to bring in other agencies before then.”

Regional task force in works as departments await grant

It is no doubt that this task force will happen because the powers that be will make it happen.

The development of a regional drug and gang taskforce still is in the works as officials await word on a grant application.

Earlier this month, Nash County Sheriff’s Major Dennis Wooten spoke with Nash County commissioners about the planned task force and officials lamented not having wider participation from other law enforcement agencies, such as the Rocky Mount Police Department. Wooten said it will be January or so until they hear about the grant application that would cover the costs of hiring a retired federal agent to coordinate the task force, so in the meantime, they are continuing to develop the planned collaboration.
