Message From The Eastern North Carolina Civic Group President Wesley Stokes

Dear members of the Eastern North Carolina Civic Group,

As we navigate uncertain times, it is my honor to serve as your new leader of the Eastern North Carolina Civic group (ENCCG), the state’s oldest civic and service network historically comprised of counties of North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District and surrounding areas.  I, Wesley Stokes, am truly humbled by the trust placed in me and want to assure you that I am committed to advancing our organization’s mission and values.

During my tenure, I intend to focus on enhancing member engagement and increasing our impact in the region and state.  I believe that together, we can achieve great things and look forward to working alongside each of you to make a positive difference.

In addition, I believe that transparency, open dialog, and inclusivity are critical to our success as an organization.  I will prioritize these values in all my interactions with members, stakeholders and the wider community.

I also want to acknowledge that we are navigating a challenging time for our organization. COVID-19 has altered the way we live, work and interact and we must be responsive to the needs of our members during this time.  I am committed to working with the new leadership team to explore new ways to connect and the frequency of face to face meetings.

Please join me in welcoming our new leadership team.  Carl Bond (Bertie Co.) will serve as 1st Vice President; Moses Matthews (Martin Co.) 2nd Vice President; Venessa Smith (Northampton Co.) 3rd Vice President; Betty Selby (Dare Co.) Secretary; Sarah Banks (Currituck Co.) Treasure and Mavis Hill (Washington Co.) Assistant Treasure.

I would be remiss if I did not thank 1st Vice President James Sears, Assistant Secretary Mae McGee and Treasurer Vera Murrill for their service and dedication to ENCCG. Mr. Sears stepped up to serve as president upon the resignation of our former president Mayor Fred Yates.  Mrs. McGee and Mrs. Murrill have provided us years of distinguished service however, like Mr. Sears, they chose not to continue in their roles as assistant secretary and treasurer.   Again, we say THANK YOU!

I am grateful for this opportunity to serve and to work with each of you to advance our collective vision. We want to hear from you.  If you have any suggestions to increase membership participation please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of the leadership team.  We need YOU.

Thank you for your continued dedication the Eastern North Carolina Civic Group.

Sincerely,

Wesley W. Stokes

Y’all Keep On Allowing Folk To Talk Negative About You Thinking It Does Not Matter

Y’all keep on allowing folk to talk negative about you thinking that it does not matter. Well it should because those who they talk to about you should say something but when they do not, that is a problem.

See y’all keep thinking them ole sayings are good like, "sticks and stone may break my bones but words will never hurt." Sounds good but a lie. There has been folk killed, locked up, homes broke up, jobs lost and the list goes on.

I refuse to be silent to things that matter. The DCN 4/30/2023

May be a black-and-white image of text that says 'Anybody who easily believes lies about you without hearing your side of the story was already looking for a way to be against you.'

Y’all Better Understand They Don’t Give A Damn About You!

I look at some folk sideways because I see they are trying to make folk mad with other folk because it is something they want.

I respond to what folk say and they get mad because they are used to folk not saying anything. But see that was because I was in their circle not so much as a friend but as an associate. Now that I ain’t a part of their circle the game changed.

See now the fire the light the Smoke is different. The DCN Smoke ain’t no joke.

Now Run & Tell That! The DCN 4/30/2023 8:25

Parents Don’t Want To Hear Them Trues!

May be an image of text that says 'It's a lot of parents shaking their heads, wiping tears, making prison visits and picking out caskets cause NOBODY can tell some of y'all kids what to do or tell you what they're doing without you going in BEAST mode... Sometimes you need to STOP defending and START disciplining. These kids don't stand a chance with some of y'all as parents... Everything is NOT an attack on them...It may be a ATTEMPT to save them...'

Thank You Marcus Willoughby For Stepping Up To The Plate And Bringing Edgecombe County Democrats Together

Marcus Willoughby thank you for stepping up to the plate and bringing Edgecombe County Democrats together. You inherited a mess because there has not been a meeting among the Edgecombe County Dems in over a year. However a few of us have been trying to keep hope alive.

Marcus I can say you have been actively engaged in trying to fulfil your duties as the 3rd Vice Chair because I have seen you at several Democratic events videoing them and also with the conversations we have had during the time you have been in office. I along with some others that have been communicating with you know you were ready to step up some time ago. I said but you can’t until the Chair steps down. Sad the Chair stepped down in the last hour.

Marcus thank you for the meeting on Thursday when you had a virtual and option to come to the funeral home beautiful conference room. I chose to come where you were.

Marcus you have done a great job reaching out to Edgecombe County Dems with the lists you had that were questionable but we had about 10 – 12 Precincts organized on Thursday and/or were going to be shortly after. Awesome because you began with only 5 organized Precincts when you stepped up to the plate.

I believe all the Edgecombe County Dems that participated on Thursday were excited about the progress and ready to have our County Convention on May 8 so we can get ready for the 1st Congressional District Convention that is held in Edgecombe County. I believe the Edgecombe County Dems are ready to go to work to make the Edgecombe County Democratic Party great again.

Thank you again Marcus and all the Precincts/Delegates that met on Thursday and those who were in the process of organizing.

NSMA Names ECSU’s Tynesha Lewis as 2023 Big House Gaines Award Winner

May be an image of 4 peoplePhoto taken in Macclesfield NC April 8, 2023 by The DCN
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.
— Rodney Terry, the men’s head coach at the University of Texas, and Tynesha Lewis, the women’s head coach at Elizabeth City State University (NC) have been named the Clarence “Big House” Gaines College Basketball Coaches of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.

Terry, the Division 1 winner of the Gaines Award, began the 2022-23 season as the Longhorns’ associate head coach before becoming the acting head coach on December 12 and interim head coach on January 5. Under those challenging circumstances, Terry led the Longhorns to a 22-8 record that included the Big 12 Tournament championship and three wins in the NCAA Tournament that landed them in the Elite Eight.

Lewis, the Division 2 winner, led the Vikings to a 20-11 record, the team’s first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament championship, and the school’s first berth in the NCAA Tournament, all in her second season as ECSU head coach. The Gaines Awards will be presented during the NSMA’s 63rd awards banquet on June 26, 2023, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Born in Angleton, Texas, Terry served as a high school head coach in his home state, as well as an assistant coach at several colleges, before spending seven seasons as head coach at Fresno State and three seasons as head coach at UTEP. He returned to the Longhorns as associate head coach for the 2021-22 season. Terry graduated from St. Edward’s University in 1990, where he was a three-year starter at point guard.

Lewis is a Macclesfield, N.C. native, who earned two bachelor’s degrees while a four-time All-ACC player and graduate assistant coach at North Carolina State. After a six-year stint in the WNBA, she continued her coaching career as an assistant at Illinois State and North Carolina Central. Along the way, Lewis also earned two master’s degrees.

ABOUT THE CLARENCE “BIG HOUSE” GAINES AWARDS

The Clarence “Big House” Gaines College Basketball Coach of the Year Awards are presented to the head coach in NCAA Divisions 1 and 2, who may not earn recognition from mainstream outlets. An NSMA committee votes on the awards at the conclusion of the NCAA men’s and women’s tournaments.

Gaines was the head basketball coach at Winston-Salem (NC) State University for 47 seasons. His teams won 828 games, including the 1967 NCAA Division II National Championship. That team was led by Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, who went on to an NBA Hall of Fame career. Among other notable players Gaines coached were Cleo Hill, the first NBA first-round draft choice from a historically Black college or university, and sports media personality Stephen A. Smith. A former president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Gaines was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982. He died in 2005.

Rev. Roosevelt Higgs Interfering In Edgecombe County Politics Needs To End

Letter to NC State Democratic Party

Hello Fellow Democrats,

Some of you especially the new officers may not be familiar with the (COR) North Carolina State Democratic Party Council Of Review held a hearing and Rev. Roosevelt Higgs was removed from the Edgecombe County Democratic Party in June 2020 until February 2023. Higgs changed his Voters Registration to Board Of Elections in Nash County last year leading up to the 2022 Elections.

Higgs has not reached out to the Nash County leadership to work with them because he knows the Nash County Chair will not entertain his mess.

Higgs has been talking about the Edgecombe County Democratic Party on the local TV Station WNCR TV owned by Bronson Williams Edgecombe County Precinct Chair 12-1 and was elected to serve on the NC State Democratic Party Council of Review not long after Higgs was removed. Higgs has called in and continue to call in to Bronson talk show daily and consistently tries to discredit local Democrats and the State Democratic Party. Just on Friday Higgs called in saying the Democratic Party is out of order for cancelling the Edgecombe County Democratic Party Convention but then he has called my number and several others. I have him blocked so it goes directly to my voicemail. He is calling some Democrats those even some of those who were the petitioners that had him removed. Although I was not a petitioner my audio voicemails that Higgs left on my phone harassing some of the petitioners and the former NC State Democratic Party Chair Wayne Goodwin was actually the key evidence. It was the demeaning of Tarboro Town Councilwoman Deborah Dew-Jordan and Goodwin that were the deciding factor to remove Higgs.

I understand that Higgs is calling Edgecombe County Democrats almost daily trying to participate in Edgecombe County Democratic Party and he needs to stop interfering in our County. His main outlet however is calling in to Bronson Williams 12-1 Precinct Chair and member NC State Council of Review talk show daily with half-trues. Some are fearful that he is going to attend our upcoming County Convention and I keep telling them that the Convention is open to all Edgecombe County Democrats and he is not invited to attend nor to speak during our convention so quit worrying about that.

During the time of the COR hearing it could not be recorded and I don’t think we could not talk about to a certain degree. Many Democrats have asked me could the COR hearing become a Public Record now that the hearing findings has expired in February. Please respond asap.
