QVC says it hasn’t made final decision on Rocky Mount facility

The Political Agitator’s response: If I worked at QVC I would be listening to what QVC are saying. I would see what they will offer me before I take on a new job.

ROCKY MOUNT — Company and local government officials say reports that QVC won’t rebuild its fire-damaged facility may have jumped the gun.

The QVC Distribution Center has been closed since a Dec. 18 fire damaged the facility.

The company filed paperwork with the state indicating it plans to let go all of its employees who worked at the site.

However, a decision on whether to reopen the facility hasn’t been made, said Ilana McCabe, director of corporate communications for QVC parent company Qurate Retail Group.

“The site has been inoperable since the fire, so it is remaining closed while the next steps are being determined,” McCabe said.

McCabe told The Enterprise on Friday that the company hasn’t made a decision to permanently close the site.

Edgecombe County Manager Eric Evans said he’s met with QVC representatives.

“They did file the official notice with the state that their operations at the facility have shut down,” Evans said. “Of course, the extensive fire that took place on Dec. 18 has made operations at the facility impossible at this time. That notice to the state enables their employees to soon apply for unemployment benefits.”

However, QVC hasn’t determined a plan forward, Evans said, and whether the company will rebuild in Rocky Mount hasn’t been decided.

“It may be months before they can gather the information they need to determine that,” Evans said. “Of course, we are hopeful that they will, and a network of partners from the county, the region and the state stand ready to assist them when they come to that decision.” (Read more)

Redistricting trial over, NC’s political future pending

The Political Agitator’s response: This makes no sense. It is evident that this was gerrymandering at its best. Just do the right thing and let the people vote.

The trial that will likely decide North Carolina’s political future for at least the rest of the decade is over. Now, the courts will decide whether they can and should intervene.

At issue are the political maps the state legislature drew, part of the constitutionally required process to recalibrate democratic representation after each census.

Because these maps control the grouping of voters of different political affiliations together, they have the power to make elections competitive between the political parties or to lock in power for one political party with little regard for how the other performs.

Republicans in the state legislature drew North Carolina’s maps last year. The maps heavily favor Republicans, according to expert analysis presented in the case.

Wanting to challenge the maps before they could be used in 2022 elections, three sets of groups sued, naming as defendants Republican legislative leadership, including House leader Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger, as well as the Republican heads of the redistricting committees that actually drew the maps.

The three trial court judges must rule in this case by Tuesday. Then, the parties have two days to appeal, which is highly likely. Any appeals will be taken up directly by the state Supreme Court. (Read more)

Wreath Laying Ceremony.  It will be Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 2pm at the M.L.K. Community Park at the corner of Virginia & Wyche Streets in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

Today marks one year since the deadly Capitol insurrection

The Political Agitator’s response: If this had been Black folk storming the White House we would be talking about countless deaths and injuries because they would have been shot and jailed. There would not be an insurrection committee.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, chairman of the Jan. 6 House select committee, said the committee is investigating individuals who tried to change the 2020 election outcome and that the panel still needs to talk to "quite a few people."

"I can tell you that we are learning that individual’s conspired to change the outcome of the election. And that is very concerning, that they used assets of the federal government to try and promote the big lie. That they intimidated state officials toward the big lie," Thompson said during a CNN special with Anderson Cooper and Jake Tapper.

Thompson made it clear the committee is very interested in the attempts to use the power of the federal government to attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.

“We have to tell that story. We’ll be able to document it. And I am concerned that even the replacement of certain people, to accomplish the big lie, was under consideration,” Thompson said. "So, the vice chair and I have joined together to make sure democracy stands in this country."

Thompson and Rep. Liz Cheney, vice chair of the Jan. 6 select committee, said they still believe there is a chance they will be able to conclude that the actions of former President Trump and some of his associates constitute a crime. (Read more)

Rocky Mount NC Meetings Around Edgecombe County Week Of January 10, 2022

Rocky Mount City Council Website
Monday January 10, 2022 7:00 PM
Agenda

Conetoe Town Hall
Tuesday Night January 11, 2022 7:00 PM
Conetoe has a new mayor and 2 new commissioners. The town has not had a Town Clerk for quite some time so therefore no bills and no employees have been paid.

The new mayor has no clue of what he is doing. and the 2 new members along with the mayor have to learn how the meeting process works. But they don’t have anyone on the commission to help them because the 2 commissioners who were already on the commission have no clue or just don’t give a damn about doing what is right.

The Town Hall meetings are supposed to be held every 2nd Tuesday 7:30 PM. The mayor said at a special called meeting on Wednesday January 5 that there would not be a regular meeting on Tuesday January 11 but they were going to meet to look at some applications for hiring a town clerk that night. But actually what they need to do is to advertise the town has an opening for a town clerk. To do anything else, I believe would be illegal. We shall see how Tuesday unfolds.

Former Wake sheriff’s employee sees morale problems, leadership vaccum

Wake CountyThe Political Agitator’s response: There has been a lot of talk about Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker since he has been in office. I just wonder about what is real and what is perceived. What I do know that Sheriff Baker can not say but so much because it gets into a personnel issue while the others can say whatever they want to especially former employees. My position on the outside looking in when I don’t know what is going on and I can really grasp the controversy one thing always comes to mind is it a problem with the way the Sheriff is running his office.
