Center for Women in Public Service is now accepting applications for the 8th Annual Women in Office Institute.  Applications accepted February 1 – April 1.  The Women in Office Institute is an intensive leadership program that prepares women to seek elected or appointed office. Blacknall Presbyterian Church, 1902 Perry Street, Durham
The participants assume the "life" of an individual, based on drawing a name out of a basket.   The simulation is broken into 4 12-minute "weeks".  Participants are given instructions by the facilitator, and then try to make it through the weeks.  The main point of the simulation and debriefing time is to help people realize first-hand some of the struggles that people living in poverty deal with every day.  As "church people" this simulation helps lead us into our ongoing conversations and missions about reaching out to those people living in poverty, as well as trying to identify and reduce the underlying reasons for poverty in our community. This event aims to equip participants to understand the arguments against torture and to prepare them for anti-torture advocacy within their own communities, trusting that the greatest protection against the U.S. government’s use of torture is a shared understanding that torture is always wrong.  The registration fee is $10 for students and $35 for non-students.
