Sheriff Cleveland Clee Atkinson Had No One To File To Challenge Him Before The Filing Period Ended On Friday March 4, 2022

Sheriff Cleveland Clee Atkinson is the best Sheriff in NC and I approve that.

I am so proud of our Sheriff because he is a people person and a godly person. This guy is all about putting the citizens first in spite of having to had to deal with mess coming from a few haters.

Our Sheriff has consistently challenged the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners to give his staff more money that they deserve. He has asked for needed equipment such as body cams, vehicles and whatever that is needed for them to carry out their duties to best protect the citizens of Edgecombe County but not limited to. Edgecombe County Sheriff Office has been called upon to other counties to assist and that is because our deputies are awesome.

Just last night I was at the EP Mart in Tarboro and had just left a viewing at Willoughby Funeral Home. I was headed to Rocky Mount however I was on a Conference Call on my Bluetooth with my Church. My neighbor was at the gas pump and he came in the store and said man you are right on time. He said I have locked my keys and phone inside my car. I said I will call the Sheriff Office. I said do you have another key at home and he said no and I said I was going to have to call someone anyway.

I called the Sheriff and within about 20 minutes Deputy Hyman the K-9 guy came and had the vehicle unlocked in less than 10 minutes. Deputy Hyman had a smile on his face and was so very nice about performing the task. Thank you Deputy Hyman for your service.

Edgecombe County should be happy to know that we have a Sheriff who is concerned about the safety and welfare of all of Edgecombe County residents but not limited to. However it is sad that he lives in the city limits of Rocky Mount and it is so much activity going on there. I believe if he was the Chief of Rocky Mount Police Department that things would be much better. So I hope that he and the new Chief will have a strong partnership because how powerful is that Rocky Mount has a Police Chief and the Edgecombe County Sheriff living in the city limits. I bet that don’t exist in another county.

Thank you Sheriff Clee Atkinson for your service. However I know you and you do not accept the glory because you always say that it is his staff along with him that make them great. However I can relate because I am out and about and I see the deputies early in the morning when I go to work be it 5 AM or 7 AM and also other times.

I am glad to know we don’t have to campaign for the upcoming election and that your campaign ends during the Primary Election because you have no opposition. So therefore you can continue to do what you do and that is always trying to come up with another way to give the citizens a resource that may help them to stay safe and to be productive citizens. Check out the services and resources that is extra to the Sheriff’s Office that he has implemented such as the “S.H.I.N.E. Citizens Academy”  for adults to learn about what the office does from the Office to the streets to the jail and “The Will To Live” program for troubled teens in school that parents can enroll their child in but the parent/s have to participate in also.

When you see our Sheriff and/or his staff please thank them for their service.

Press Release: Edgecombe County Sheriff Deputy Involved In Shooting

RE: Officer Involved Shooting

On 10/14/21 at 2:04 pm, deputies were called to respond to 4328 McNair Rd. in reference to the caller’s nephew coming at her with a knife. At 2:07pm a Black male Corporal arrived followed by a Black male backup deputy at 2:09pm. They spoke with the caller in the front yard. She led them to the front door of the residence. As soon as she opened the door, the 32 year old Black male suspect charged out the door with a large tactical style knife, stabbing the Corporal twice in the back. This was within 3 seconds of the door opening. He immediately got up and began charging at the backup deputy. At this time, a White male deputy was walking up to the house as he had just arrived.

Deputies fired their weapons, killing the suspect. This incident took place in under 10 seconds. Forestry Officers hearing the call on the radio responded to the scene and immediately began providing first aid to the Corporal who had been stabbed. We are eternally grateful for their quick action, care, and compassion! Edgecombe EMS arrived and provided care and transported the wounded Corporal to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he was treated and released to recover at home.

As is the case in all officer involved shootings, we contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations who took over the investigation. All 3 deputies were wearing bodycams which captured the incident. These recordings have been turned over to the SBI for their investigation. Sheriff Atkinson planned to release the names of the deputies involved in his press conference this morning but was instructed not to by District Attorney Robert Evans. We strive for transparency in incidents and will release all information as soon as we are allowed to.

The suspect had a history of mental illness and deputies had been called to this residence for him several times in the past year, as well as to another address for him. Sheriff Atkinson notes that we have to do a better job in ensuring there are resources to treat people with serious mental illness locally, and across the state.

We would like to thank Tarboro Police Department, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, NC Forestry Service, DMV License and Theft, Edgecombe County EMS, Vidant Medical Center, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Rocky Mount Police Department, All 99 of NC Sheriffs who reached out with a call or text to Sheriff Atkinson, and anyone we may have overlooked. Your support is very much appreciated!

Sheriff Atkinson would like to ask that everyone please pray for our office, the Corporal who was stabbed, the other involved officers, the family of the deceased, and our community during these trying times.

Edgecombe sheriff launches new youth program

Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office is launching what it is calling the “A Will to Live” program in an effort to help local youth learn that the choices they make in life have consequences and could get them in trouble, incarcerated or dead.

The program, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. one Friday per month, will begin on Aug. 20. It is limited to 11 participants per session. Participants must be between the ages of 10 and 16 and their parents must agree to attend a two-hour parental support class the day of the program.

“We get maybe three calls a week from parents with children who are crossing the discipline line,” Sheriff Clee Atkinson said.

He said the program is not a new one.

“It started about 10 to 15 years ago, sitting at a table with local gang members in Rocky Mount,” he said. “The title came from a local gang member.”

Atkinson said that looking back over the past couple of years, he feels there is a definite need for the program.

“We’ve got to help these children survive and live and have the opportunity to thrive,” he said. (Read more)

Re-Elect Clee Atkinson Edgecombe County Sheriff

Alvin Lafon Jones

Sheriff Cleveland Clee Atkinson has proven consistently with his actions that he is not only visible within the communities, but he is accessible to all of the citizens regardless of their age, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, race,, creed, or color. Sheriff Atkinson is readily accessible to all citizens regardless of what side of town they live on or what neighborhood they live in.

Because of his undeterred mission to aggressively and unrelentlessly pursue, apprehend, charge, and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law all those who commit crimes in Edgecombe County, there has been a great reduction across the board each year in the crime rate under his leadership as reflected in the SBI annual report. In addition to setting the bar high for his staff and holding them accountable for their actions, he is a top-notch, educated leader who courageously speaks truth to power. Sheriff Atkinson is the epitome of professionalism, and a man of integrity who KNOWS the way, SHOWS the way and GOES the way!

The Political Agitator’s response: What Jones said! This is why we must re-elect our Sheriff.

Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson Address County Commissioners During Budget Hearing

Kathy Williams

Please listen to Sheriff Atkinson’s remarks starting at 20:30. It sounds to me like he’s offering a solution to getting better pay for his staff and deputies so why isn’t Edgecombe County jumping on it? Makes one wonder if they even care about how little the county pays some of its employees! I’m proud of Sheriff Atkinson for standing up and speaking up!! Now if the citizens of the county would do the same! Run when seats are open and stop voting for the same old mess that has made us one of the highest taxed counties with nothing to show for it! Please share and let everyone know what’s really happening in Edgecombe County!

Message From Edgecombe County Sheriff Cleveland “Clee” Atkinson

Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office

From the desk of Sheriff Cleveland “Clee” Atkinson, Jr….

With recent events and unrest in our nation, my top priorities as Sheriff of Edgecombe County is the safety of my deputies and serving and protect the citizens of this county through our core values of Respect, Integrity & Professionalism. As an outcome of such, we would like to take time out to reassure our citizens by sharing some common practices that are implemented in our Office. They are designed to ensure fairness and transparency through our service.

• Deputies receive and will continue to receive Implicit bias Policing training.
• Deputies have been outfitted with modern Axon body cameras to record encounters with the public, the cameras automatically activate when the taser or firearm is unholstered, eradicating user error.
• Our policy requires other law enforcement officers to intervene and make a report when they witness unnecessary force being used.
• We follow the Use of Force Continuum and receive training on it each year.
• Deputies are to give a warning before utilizing force when circumstances allow.
• We have established a Use of Force review board.
• Deputies are held to a strict social media usage policy both, on and off duty.
• We continue to actively build community relations.

We continue to train and improve our operations to comply with federal and state law, as well as best practices to assure we serve our citizens to the best of our ability and power.

Yours truly,

Cleveland “Clee” Atkinson
Sheriff of Edgecombe County

Sheriff pumps up school weight room – Rocky Mount Telegram

atkinson_clee.jpgA local law enforcement agency stepped up to help an area high school in serious need of upgraded athletic equipment.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office donated several pieces of weight room and fitness equipment to SouthWest Edgecombe High School. Sheriff Clee Atkinson said the school received about 12 to 15 pieces of used equipment that is still in great shape. Atkinson was able to gather the equipment from people he has built relationships with from across North Carolina.

Dr. Valerie Bridges, superintendent of Edgecombe County Public Schools, said the Sheriff’s Office is one of the school district’s most important partners.

“We’re extremely grateful for the donation of fitness equipment for SouthWest High School,” Bridges said. “This will give our students access to state-of-the-art equipment in the weight room. Sheriff Atkinson and his department have been instrumental in our school receiving this amazing gift.”

SouthWest Edgecombe football coach Jonathan Cobb said the last time any new or updated equipment was purchased for the school’s weight room was 31 years ago in memory of a former SouthWest player. (Read more)
