‘No-kill’ policies can send animals into worse conditions – The Eagle Tribune

It’s a disturbingly common scenario: Officials had to rescue about 120 animals from deplorable conditions at a New Mexico “sanctuary” recently. Many dogs were confined to dilapidated pens with little to no protection from the elements. Cats were locked in a basement with filthy litterboxes. There were dead mice in water containers. Animals were injured, neglected and in need of veterinary care. But we’d heard it all before.

Not a week goes by without reports of animals found in criminally cruel conditions at self-professed “rescues” and “sanctuaries” that claim to “save” animals from euthanasia. Their names, like “Life for God’s Stray Animals,” “Angel’s Gate” and “Heaven on Earth Farm,” belie the hellish conditions in which the animals have been kept.

This February, for example, authorities seized 100 animals, including four dead cats, from a “rescuer” in Kentucky. An animal control official testified to finding dogs crammed into filthy crates; feces and urine throughout the “rescuer’s” home; a lack of adequate food and water; and animals who were underweight, missing fur and suffering from skin conditions, open sores and flea infestations. Remember these Public Comments. Make sure you follow the outcome of what takes place with the committee especially the folk who are on the committee and will be added to the committee. See how this all unfolds. See what the motives are and why.

I have not had the opportunity to visit the animal shelter yet but gonna shoot for a visit next week. I have heard some things but I like to do my homework.

I will challenge animal lovers, animal haters and others because I see myself as neutral. I don’t own pets the closest I have been to owning pets is raising pigs/hogs for years having atleast 100 or more at a time.

I am looking forward to doing what the County Commissioners will be asking of the committee and not what folk want alone especially folk who have just the animal side in mind and not the rules ie: local ordinances and state laws that the county are governed by.

I hope to see an Edgecombe County Animal Shelter Website in the future if there is not one. I don’t know what is all going on at the moment because I have not heard anything from the commissioners so therefore I am going to just sit here and wait to work on the committee. However as I stated I will be visiting the Animal Shelter hopefully next week. But if I don’t I got time because I am quite sure the committee will probably go visit as a group in the future.

TARBORO — A special committee to examine the use of chains to leash dogs has been established by the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners.

The committee was created during Monday’s county board meeting after Janice Thompson, president of Tender Mercies, asked commissioners to adopt an ordinance banning the use of chains.

Teresa Williams Queen Lots of opinions in this. First, we are talking about dogs that LIVE on chains. Dogs that live on chains are more often than not, under-vaccinated, under-socialized and under or over stimulated. (depending on the breed, age, and natural temperament) Dogs have been bred for centuries for specific purposes, hunting, herding, protection and companionship. None of that happens on the end of a chain.

Van Holland Curmilus Butch Dancy II I’m not trying to say anything except what I’ve already stated which are facts.
The committee is in the early stages and it will be awhile before it starts because of bylaws and things of that nature. Plus more people have to be appointed and the commissioners haven’t approved the committee yet.
And I’m also saying the Telegram story is incorrect because the way it was written makes people think that the committee consists of just 3 people. And that’s not the case. That committee will have at least six to eight people on it, if not more just like other committees that have been formed through the board.
And the main reason Chairman Wiggins said anything about a committee is due to Janice Thompson talking about taking the leash laws off the books and out of the ordinances.
That can’t happen because then there would be too many complaints for Sheriff Atkinson’s Animal Control officers answering dog bite calls, where in fact they already answer more than 200 calls for service per month and having just 3 officers working in that division they can’t take on anymore.
That’s all facts and that’s what I meant.

Anyone who says a Committee was not formed after looking at the video has some issues.

Now if I wanted to call names, I have no problem with doing so. Again didn’t know saying being hilarious is name calling so I learned something today.

Van Holland Yes the article was written and it was written wrong in the Telegram.
The committee has not been fully formed and NO bylaws have been established nor has the commissioners given the Ok to put the committee in motion. There will be a lot more than 3 members on the committee. And it will be several months before the committee begins because the commissioners want to look at surrounding counties and towns ordinances and laws on tethering and other parts of leash laws.

TARBORO — A special committee to examine the use of chains to leash dogs has been established by the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners.

The committee was created during Monday’s county board meeting after Janice Thompson, president of Tender Mercies, asked commissioners to adopt an ordinance banning the use of chains.

Thompson recounted examples of mistreated dogs tied up with heavy chains outside houses in the county. She said many of those animals were found to be living in freezing conditions and infested with heart worms.

Outlawing chains would just mean an influx of dogs at the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter, said Kathy Williams, who volunteers at the shelter. (Read more)
