Area native named dean of college in Wisconsin

Dr. Kelly is the nephew of Clara Knight of Rocky Mount NC.

Hilton Kelly recently was selected to be the next dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

“I am excited to be welcoming Dr. Kelly to our team here at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville,” University of Wisconsin-Platteville Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Tammy Evetovich said. “I think the Platteville community will find him to be an avid learner and achiever that will advocate for the important foundation and professional growth provided by the excellent faculty and staff in the College of Liberal Arts and Education. He is truly a collaborative leader with great ideas and holds a strong commitment to student success.”

A Sharpsburg native, Kelly is the son of the late John Kelly and the late Vernice Kelly Lindsey. His sister Portia Williams and her husband Timothy Williams Sr. live in Elm City.

Kelley currently is department chairman of the Educational Studies Department and professor of educational studies and Africana studies at Davidson College in North Carolina. Biden introduces Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as Supreme Court nominee

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden announced Friday that he will nominate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, to succeed Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court.

“For too long our government, our courts, haven’t looked like America,” Biden said in an event at the White House. “I believe it’s time that we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation.”

If confirmed, Jackson would become the first Black woman to serve on the court. At 51, she would also be the second-youngest justice on the current court (Justice Amy Coney Barrett turned 50 in January) and the first justice since Thurgood Marshall with significant experience as a defense lawyer.

As the successor to Breyer, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1994, Jackson would not change the court’s current 6-to-3 conservative supermajority.

Jackson was nominated to her appeals court position just eight months ago and was confirmed in a 53-44 vote with the support of all Democrats and three Republican senators. Only David Souter, appointed by President George W. Bush, came to the Supreme Court with less time on the federal appeals court — under five months in his case.

Jackson will need a simple majority in the Senate in order to secure confirmation. Although she earned some Republican votes last year, there were early indications Friday that her Supreme Court confirmation process would be more challenging. (Read more)

Tarrick Pittman charged with cyberstalking

ROCKY MOUNT — A former political candidate and local television personality has been charged with cyberstalking.

Tarrick Pittman, 34, is accused of using electronic means to harass and threaten John Jesso, according to a criminal summons issued by a Nash County magistrate with a court date set for March 9.

Pittman told Jesso in text messages that for the safety of his wife and dogs he should leave Rocky Mount.

Pittman also warned Jesso to stay out of downtown.

Jesso, the city’s former downtown manager, is listed in court records as a complaining witness in the case. He is now an employee of Chambliss and Rabel, the company that manages the downtown commercial property from which Pittman is being evicted.

Jesso signed the eviction notice claiming Pittman owned $7,000 in back rent.

Pittman, leader of the Downtown Merchants Association, previously failed to pay rent at a building on the Douglas Block in 2019 and a building on Falls Road in 2020.

Mayor Sandy Roberson, a candidate for Congress in North Carolina’s 2nd District, announced Pittman’s appointment to the city’s housing authority board the same day Pittman was charged.

Roberson told The Enterprise he didn’t know about Pittman’s criminal charge and most recent eviction case.

The offense allegedly took place Feb. 9. Pittman was charged Feb. 11 and served Feb. 17, according to documents on file at the Nash County Clerk of Court.

Pittman previously told The Enterprise that the cyberstalking charge was the result of him just trying to renegotiate his lease.

"Sometimes those discussions became heated, with accusations flying back and forth," Pittman said. “I have no qualms against anyone, and the ‘bullying’ was me giving honest advice that was taken out of context. It happens sometimes, but that’s life."

Pittman, who ran unsuccessfully against Councilman Andre Knight for Ward 1 in 2019, is the host of Independent Thinkers, a show that airs weekly on WNCR. (Read more)

No 9-1-1 call made in Andre Knight accident

ROCKY MOUNT — Two councilmen and two high-ranking city employees were present at the scene of a downtown accident that resulted in serious injuries, but none of them called 9-1-1.

Councilman Andre Knight broke his leg in some type of fall in his building at 114 Sunset Avenue on Feb. 7.

The building houses a cellphone selfie studio. Emergency reports list the property as a "proposed outreach ministry."

Councilman Reuben Blackwell, Kevin Harris, the city’s downtown manager; and Fire Chief Corey Mercer showed up to help Knight, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

At no point during the situation did anyone call 9-1-1. Use of 9-1-1 generates a recording that is accessible to the public.

Mercer called firefighters to the scene for a "lift assist," according to a police communications event report obtained by The Enterprise via a public records request.

Lift assist calls involve a person who has fallen and can’t get up on their own.

City first responders asked for help from Nash County Emergency Services. An ambulance arrived and transported Knight to Wake Medical in Raleigh after initially planning to take him to Nash UNC Health Care.

Knight spent at least five days in the hospital. A week after his fall, he participated in the Rocky Mount City Council’s Feb. 14 meeting via conference call. (Read more)

When it does I ain’t gonna say nothing because he’s brought it on himself with his constant obsession of REAL & OUTSPOKEN Black leaders who aren’t afraid to stand up for what’s right.

They’re laying off TJ now since they waved them dollars in his face that he ain’t getting from his home church anymore. Money will change someone especially if they’re already weak in the mind.

Notice how he didn’t mention TJ. I wonder why…. He’s in with the RMCC to throw AK and then under the bus.

Look he turned on the black majority by doing the dirty work for Lige. Basically TJ kicked Andre off the Electric Cities board and replaced him with Lige. He was so unprepared when he made that motion but everyone knows he was set up by Lige to do his dirty work. Go back and look at the meeting and you’ll see what went down. But he’s such a sell out and it’s a reason why he’s going to Englewood Bapt. Church.

Go to the 52:16 minute mark and you’ll see what went down. They thought Andre wasn’t going to be at the meeting so how dirty is it? They even moved the board appointments after item #8 so TJ could make the motion so it can get done before he leaves the meeting early to attend his sons basketball game. Lige made the motion to move board appointments up the agenda and Andre questioned it. Andre and Rueben were the only no votes.

MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN DECEMBER 2021 RELEASED ON $100K BOND

ELBERT ALLEN who is charged with the murder of TAVEON O’KELLY in December of 2021 on Hargrove St. in Rocky Mount was released at 630pm on Wednesday.

Allen was granted a $100K secured bond on Wednesday after a bond hearing.

Fighting Crime was made aware of his release after the victim’s family member had learned through another person of his release and called Fighting Crime to verify the release. The release was verified.

RMPD or any other agency has not contacted the family of the victim which is required by Marsy’s law to do.

The victim’s family was not notified of a bond hearing in the case so they could be there to express concern.

At this time there has not been an updated court date in the case.

I was there when former Mayor Delia Perkins broke the tie to save Princeville. I have seen them flood 2 more times since then. I can relate because down the road in Pinetops NC my home was flooded during those times. I was attending and videoing Princeville Town Meetings before the flood in 1999 and videoed them for years.
