Rocky Mount NAACP Hosts the NC NAACP in a Town Hall Meeting to Discuss the KKK Social Media Posting

Rocky Mount, NC – The Rocky Mount Branch of the NAACP announced today that it is scheduling a Town Hall Meeting on Monday, December 22nd at 7 p.m. in the OIC Auditorium at 402 E. Virginia Street to discuss the recent KKK social media posting by several Nash Central High School students. Rocky Mount Branch President Andre’ Knight stated, “The NAACP has heard the cries of children, parents and the community about the light manner in which the offensive imageInstagram posting initiated by Nash Central students has been taken by the Nash/Rocky Mount Schools. This forum is designed to do what Superintendent Anthony Jackson has asked the community to do, ‘help our students get through the stuff by being honest with them and most of all, showing them by our actions how to resolve conflict resolution appropriately.’”

Knight continued, “We are receiving numerous complaints from students and their families that black children are being disciplined if they even mention the incident while these young girls who posted clear images of the worst expression of hate in our country have received protection from the schools. If this is true, this is the time to openly and publicly discuss what has and is taking place. Rev. Dr. William Barber, the NC NAACP President, will lead the discussion with the community in order to facilitate the ‘teachable moment’ that the Nash/Rocky Mount Schools would like our community to engage in and help place into perspective the seriousness of the error of tolerance towards hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan that have an active, violent and widespread presence in America and in the greater Rocky Mount region.”

President Knight concluded that, “It is clear throughout numerous examples that we see in the media and in attitudes from many everyday citizens, that racial intolerance is becoming socially acceptable again. The NAACP was created to address that attitude and end the acts of violence and discrimination that come as a result. Clearly, our job is not done. This forum provides an opportunity for Nash/Rocky Mount School Board members, the Superintendent and his administration, staff and all parents and students throughout this school system and others to join us on Monday to have a conversation that is vital and to help us develop our approach and plan moving forward. We will embrace the young girls and their families who initiated this offense if they are willing to publicly step forward and offer sincere apologies to the entire community. If not, we will discuss the next steps that our leader, Rev. Dr. Barber will ask us to make.”

###

Note: I am a Life Fully Paid Member NAACP Rocky Mount Branch and I support this meeting. Read the Mission Statement for the NAACP and don’t listen to Ignant Racist White Folks and Ignant Safe Negroes who say otherwise. They can twist the mission all the want but the mission statement stands and we will carry out the mission.

Where: In front of the General Assembly, 16 W. Jones Street, Raleigh, NC

The Racial Justice Act would allow a defendant facing the death penalty to challenge his conviction or death sentence if he can show that it was based on inappropriate considerations of race. North Carolina courts are currently sorting out legal questions surrounding the resumption of executions.  An amendment to restart executions attached to a bill to reduce the risk of racial discrimination is highly inappropriate.

Press Release – AFRICAN LEADERS SAY “HANDS OFF SUDAN!”

For Immediate Release

Contact: William Reed

AFRICAN LEADERS SAY “HANDS OFF SUDAN!”

March 11, 2009 (Washington, DC)… As vehicle horns blared and motorist flashed their lights in support, a predominately male group of demonstrators marched in front of The Republic of Sudan’s Embassy site along Washington’s Embassy Row.  In contrast to past demonstrations at the Massachusetts Avenue location protesting against the government of Africa’s largest country, this cross-section of Christians and Muslims group of 75 were there in support of Sudan’s President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir.

“I have come here to express solidarity with the people of Sudan in their struggles against imperialist domination” said Akbar Muhammad, Founder of the Youth 4 Africa Foundation.  The former International Representative for the Nation of Islam said that the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) March 4th decision to issue an arrest warrant for Al-Bashir was “illegitimate”.  Muhammad said “Imperialist powers seek regime change in Sudan because the country has vast lands and resources they are loath to let out of their control”.

Rally protesters held signs aloft that labeled the ICC as “a racist court” for its indictment of Bashir.   Hodari Abdul-Ali, executive director of the Give Peace A Chance Coalition, said the ICC, “received 1700 complaints from over a hundred countries to investigate charges of serious crimes of concern to humanity, yet the only investigations the Court has initiated have been in African countries”.  The African Union has formally called on the United Nations Security Council to defer an indictment for 12 months, to give a greater chance to the peace process now ongoing between the Sudanese government and rebel factions.  The AU’s Commission Chief has also accused the court of concentrating only on Africans.

The Rally’s speakers said “ICC and US allegations against Al-Bashir thwart the Darfur peace process and encourage rebel intransigence.  Lawrence Freeman, African specialist for a Lyndon LaRouche publication pointed out that “the United States stands along in the world alleging “genocide” against Sudanese leaders” and “that Western media distorts the realities occurring in the war-torn country”.

In Sudan, the Sudan Tribune reports that the leaders from three Darfur tribes that Western media says are victims of war crimes by the Khartoum government are suing International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Luis-Moreno Ocampo for “libel, defamation and igniting hatred and tribalism”.  “We think that Ocampo’s claim that particular tribes are targeted is not true and creates more chaos,” said Abd Allah Ibrahim.  Ibrahim is an advisor on tribal reconciliation efforts in Darfur.  He is working with the Sudanese Lawyers Union to bring a case against the ICC prosecutor, alleging he and fellow tribal leaders were harmed by Ocampo’s claim of organized genocide in Darfur and that “will hurt the social fabric of Darfur and create more chaos.”  Al-Bashir’s image in Darfur and Africa is vastly different than the “international pariah” Western media depicts.  Shoring up support against the ICC in Sudan, Al-Bashir went to El Fasher to the same airport tarmac where rebels set off the Darfur conflict in 2003 by blowing up government planes parked there.  As he deplaned, Bashir was greeted by a hundred tribal elders and a white dove was thrust into his hands.

The African Union (AU) opposes the ICC indictment.  South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana-Dlamini Zuma’s comments that her country “concurs with the African Union’s initial response that the ICC’s decision is regrettable as it will impact negatively on the current peace processes in the Sudan”.  The AU has appointed former South African President Thabo Mbeki to “intercede between the ICC and the Sudan.”  Saudi Arabia expressed “strong dissatisfaction” over the ICC decision.

Dr. Kaukab Siddique of Jamaat Al-Muslimeen Islamic told the DC rally, “It’s curious that the ICC ignores the greatest tragedy in the world in Iraq and does not cite George Bush for his crimes…A million people have been cooped up in Gaza and killed at will by occupation forces…Yet, there are no ICC charges for gross human rights violations”.

Brian Becker, Executive Director of International ANSWER coalition, protestors of U.S. invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and Zionist aggression against Palestine, said “there is imperialist hypocrisy over Darfur.  History shows that so-called Western ‘peace-keeping’ forces sent for ‘humanitarian’ reasons, in reality are deployed to further imperialist interests, not for peace and reconciliation”.

Lawrence Freeman told the rally that LaRouche organization is engaging in a world-wide campaign “to expose ICC duplicity on Africa”.  After being greeted by Sudan’s Ambassador Akec Khoc Acieu, Abdul-Ali said “Supporters to curb the ICC will grow internationally once people stop accepting biased media reports and start to investigate who benefits from continuing the war in Sudan.  Instead of inflaming the conflicts in Sudan and Darfur, it’s time for the American people demand that the rebel factions, that started the war in Darfur, be brought to the table to curb the crimes and killings and make peace”.

Rocky Mount NC – FVSU Administrator publishes new book

dilsii33259
A tour-de-force in book form by a Fort Valley State University administrator covers one of America’s darkest historical periods. Dr. Vann Newkirk, interim associate vice president of the Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness and a history instructor on campus, has written a comprehensive book titled “Lynching in North Carolina: A History 1865-1941.” The book explores the culture of lynching – a form of mob violence – that prospered in the “Tar Heel State” following the Civil War until the mid 1920s. More than 168 North Carolinians were murdered during this period.

“The reason I wrote this whole book was because of my grandfather’s stories about violent acts against African Americans, which I never believed to be true,” Newkirk said. “I heard about the lynching of Dock Rodgers and found out that his stories were true.”

Newkirk says that the deaths of James Byrd in Jasper, TX in 1998, and Matthew Shepard, a homosexual college student, led him to believe that lynchings never ended.

“The definition of lynching is that it has to be at the hands of two or more people for racial or sexually motivated issues,” he said. “Some of these issues that happen today which are classified as hate crimes are borderline lynchings.”

Newkirk’s book explores the reasons given by perpetrators to justify mob violence for instance, the control over sectors of the black population, the protection of wives and daughters, and the preservation of family honor. In 1893, legal attempts were made in North Carolina to deter lynching by state and local officials, but the lack of enforcement made the laws ineffective. After 1922, the number of killings decreased due to economic pressures according to Newkirk. The state stopped the violence because of the need to borrow money from northern bankers, who often disapproved of the violent acts.

Newkirk currently serves as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and associate professor of history at Fort Valley State at Fort Valley State University.  He has also served as Academic Dean/Provost at Andrew College and as Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness at North Carolina Wesleyan College.  In 1999, Newkirk was invited to serve on the 12-member SACS consultant network panel. He has written quality enhancement plans for more than 10 institutions and led them through the SACS reaffirmation process. The schools include Barber-Scotia College in Concord, N.C.; North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, N.C.; Allen University in Columbia, S.C.; St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va.; and North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Ga.

Newkirk holds a doctorate in history from Howard University, a master’s degree in library science from North Carolina Central University, a master’s degree in history from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C., and a bachelor’s from Barber-Scotia College. He has extensively researched the development of the NAACP in North Carolina and the subject of crime and punishment in general and has served as an educational consultant for colleges across the South.

Note: This is quite interesting. Can’t wait to see what Dr. Newkirk will teach us about the history of lynching in NC. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

Announcement – (Your City?) NC Paid Sick Days Update: Campaign launches, press responds, and Town Hall meetings

Greetings Paid Sick Days supporters:

Another update and another round of evidence that NC’s Campaign for Paid Sick Days has upgraded its viral status from the flu to salmonella (don’t worry, we’re not selling peanut butter as a fundraiser).  The last several weeks have been frenetic-in a good way-and we officially launched our NC campaign, got an explosion of news coverage, watched our friends in Connecticut pass their paid sick days bill out of the House Labor committee, and are gearing up for more action to come.  Here’s a roundup of what’s going on in North Carolina, around the country, and recent news articles:

NC’s Campaign for Paid Sick Days kicks off with a bang On Wednesday, March 4, many of our coalition partners and legislative allies descended upon the Legislative Building Press Room as we officially launched our 2009 paid sick days campaign.  Our star-studded line-up of speakers:

  • Rep. Alma Adams started us off with the plea that in this economy, workers especially need paid sick days.  Click here for audio clip.
  • Blair Brown, a CAT bus operator, shared his story of how having paid sick days was critical in caring for his wife who doesn’t have them.  Click here for clip.
  • Jeannine Sato spoke on behalf of Moms Rising and detailed how “Mom’s get it why paid sick days are so important” and she did it with her beautiful daughter Hana on her hip (double kudos!).  Click here for clip.
  • Diana Hatch of AARP-NC outlined why paid sick days are so important for elderly caregivers and our older loved ones they take care of.  Click here for clip.

Thanks to all of you who came out and supported us and golly, the press noticed as you’ll see below.  If you missed the press conference, don’t worry, you can watch it on repeat here

Healthy Families and Healthy Workplaces Act introduced in Senate Now we’ve got not just one but two paid sick days bills in the NC General Assembly.  Yesterday, Senator Katie Dorsett (D-Guilford) introduced the Senate Healthy Families and Healthy Workplaces Act, SB 534 and just like on the House side, we’ve got a great roster of co-sponsors, 14 of them.  If any of the following Senators represent you, send them a quick note and thank them for co-sponsoring SB 534: Senators Dorsett, Atwater, D. Berger, Bingham, Dannelly, Davis, Goss, Kinnaird, Malone, McKissick, Nesbitt, Purcell, Rand, and Snow.

First Town Hall Meetings to start next week-join us & spread the word Our roadshow officially kicks off on Monday, March 16 in High Point and then you can catch us in Durham on Thursday, March 19.  Yep, our Paid Sick Days Town Hall Meetings are nearly underway.  Come join us when we pass through your area, learn about the campaign, and share your story.  Here’s the roster:

And to wrap up the tour, we’ll be hitting up Charlotte, Wilmington, and Greenville in mid-April.  To attend any Town Hall’s, please RSVP to Ajamu@ncjustice.org or (919) 856-3194.

Press coverage round-up Despite the fact that Governor Perdue signed her first bill at a press conference at the exact same time as ours, the media couldn’t ignore paid sick days:

Don’t get sick and as always, check out our website at www.ncsickdays.org for more info and updates.
