Art Pope: a one-man Republican equalizer–News & Observer (And You Shop At His Stores But See What Other NC Businesses Donates)

RALEIGH — ### CORRECTION: The News & Observer incorrectly reported Wednesday that the family foundation of businessman Art Pope has provided more than $17 million to finance a network of conservative think tanks through the years, according to the Institute for Southern Studies. That figure only applies to the John Locke Foundation. The Pope family foundation has spent more than $28.7 million on the think tanks, according to the institute. ### (Read more)

Now this is very interesting. But the biggest share of money has come from the Washington-based Republican State Leadership Committee, which has contributed at least $850,000, according to Internal Revenue Service records. Ed Gillespie, the founder of the committee and former chairman of the Republican National Committee, met with Pope and others in Raleigh for lunch this spring and agreed to help, according to Pope. There is no way of knowing where the money originated. But according to IRS records, Pope’s company contributed $36,500 to the leadership committee. (It was not the biggest North Carolina donor to the Washington group. Reynolds American of Winston-Salem has put in $144,000, Bank of America of Charlotte contributed $50,000, and Time Warner Cable of Charlotte gave $15,000, according to IRS records.)

Note: So they take your money and use it against you. Look at the monies this dude is working with. And then some folks talk about black folks don’t need reparations. They talk about our POTUS (Barack Obama) as if he is some kind of monster when the real monsters are those who are spending all of this money trying to hold a group of people right where they are.

One person talk about why black folks are not Republicans. Well sir this is the reason why I am not a Republican because I know what the now Republican Party is all about. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

Can Bank of America Do This?

If the answer really is "Yes" all of y’all had better start chapters of the Collective Banking Group, like tomorrow!  Jim

Can

Bank of America

do this?

Thanks to the hundreds of responses I received from the initial posting of this question.

My client has a checking account and credit card with Bank of America. The only thing the two accounts have in common is his social security number and address.  On May 5, 2010 he received a letter from Bank of Americainforming him that they exercised their right to debit his account in the amount of $4743.30 which will be applied to the balance owed on his Bank of America credit card account. The balance owing on the credit card is now $3236.26. The balance left in his checking account is $100.00

Is this legal? YES

Here is the reply from two reliable sources: Attorney David Workman, and Ginna Green, Center for Responsible Lending — California Office.

It’s called the "bankers’ right of set-off" — which gives banks in which a customer has a deposit account the right to dip into that account to pay debts the customer has with that bank without going to court like other creditors do.

He should check the deposit agreement with his bank, which will almost certainly have a clause in it saying so, and saying under what conditions they can exercise that right.
