SPARTANBURG, S.C. – During the press conference prior to the state high school football championship games earlier this month, Tarboro coach Jeff Craddock approached Mark Barnes of Shelby’s Crest High School.

Barnes, whose Crest squad was playing for the state 3-AA title, would be coaching Tarboro’s star running back, Todd Gurley, a week later in the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game.
