Homegoing Celebration For Joe W. Dickens Jr. Thursday March 27, 2014 “Joe Must Have Known” Rev. Joseph Bryant New Morning Star Church Rocky Mount NC

Although I thought Joe W. Dickens Jr. speech played during the wake would have been sufficient for the wake and the funeral, Rev. Joseph Bryant delivered yet another powerful message, “Joe Must Have Known!”

Joe W. Dickens Jr. Wake Wednesday March 26, 2014 Whites Chapel Speed NC Speech By Joe Titled, "This Is Why I Celebrate!"

The wake for Joe W. Dickens Jr. was the most powerful wake I have ever recorded. I have recorded a many over the years. The keynote speaker of the night as Rev. Roy Gray presider put it was Joe W. Dickens Jr. himself. When the audio began it felt as if Joe was in the room. An audio of Joe addressing Whites Chapel Church and his family on Thanksgiving Day 2013 titled, “This Is Why I Celebrate!” was so powerful that I felt it would have been sufficient for the night with no other remarks following. I felt the same message could have been played during the funeral and it would have been ENOUGH! I have watched this message every day since Wednesday night and it is just like watching it for the first time each and every time I watch it.

Dickens touched many lives throughout Edgecombe County and abroad through the Edgecombe County Agricultural Extension Office, Edgecombe County Board of Education, The Annual Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Celebrations and Dickens Funeral Home Services Inc. but not limited to. He was always full of jokes and would make you laugh with that unique voice. Just a couple of weeks ago I videoed a funeral service and he was still serving the people up until his time of passing. He will truly be missed.

Butterfield Mourns the Loss of Friend, Joe Willie Dickens, Jr.

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) today released the following statement regarding the passing of Mr. Joe Willie Dickens, Jr.:

“It is with a heavy heart that I grieve the passing of my long-time friend, Mr. Joe Willie Dickens, Jr.  Joe was an extraordinary community leader and human being, who dedicated his entire life to public service.  In addition to serving as both an educator and a member of the Edgecombe County School Board, he owned and operated Dickens Funeral Service in Tarboro, North Carolina for more than 28 years.  Through his business, Joe was able to help hundreds of families at their most vulnerable moments and brought comfort during times of deep sadness.  His presence will be sorely missed and I extend my sympathies to his family during this very difficult time.”
