In Response To “School board worries about ailing member”

First of all this article was brought to my attention and after reading it I found it quite hilarious. I can’t believe the school board members had this type of conversation in open session. The comments lead me to believe that none of the board members have spoken to Olga Dickens but I could be wrong.

I know someone very close to the family and I have been keeping up with her through that person. I have heard several rumors about Dickens condition and some had me very worried. My sources did tell me and continue to tell me that Dickens has been very, very sick.

I find the following comments to be quite interesting, “Do we have any idea if this seat will become vacant or if our fellow school board member will return to us? Scott asked. Scott said that two people have approached her with concerns about the lack of representation of their district on the board. Other school board members said they have received calls as well.”

“My heart goes out to Mrs. Dickens and I hope she improves,” said Ann Kent, vice chairman of the school board. “However, I am more concerned that her district is not being monitored and represented the way it should be.”

“From the comments I have heard, people feel that we are allowing this situation to continue and we don’t care about them, said the Rev. Raymond Privott, board member for District 6.”

Kent who has worked at Edgecombe Community College for decades, Scott being a Social Worker and Rev. Privott being a former School Administrator and now a Pastor all ought to know how to reach out to someone.

When things are going on in one’s life time really flies and I am quite sure that can be said about someone going through such a sickening time as Dickens has experienced for months now.

But to say that someone has complained about not having any representation I think that is too broad of a statement. To say they are not being represented without any details can be quite interesting. What is it that any board member is doing that Dickens has missed out on? Someone in District 2 that has any concerns should be able to contact any board member and “they” should be able to address any school related issue.

If the issue is someone is complaining that Dickens is continuing to receive a check and not attending the meetings, then I could understand that better. However board members are elected so therefore it is up to them to resign from the board before their term is up. This is no different than if a person was to get sick on a job, do they just quit before they find out they can no longer return?

I am glad the school attorney and the UNC School of Government spoke to the issue so that whomever the board members are speaking for can understand what is going on.

As a community activist and long time follower of the Edgecombe County Board of Education I find the article to be quite interesting and could be misleading. Since the school board members meet only one time a month, I am curious to know why those who are complaining feel they are not being represented. I would love to know if the board members have reached out to Dickens to address others and their concerns.

Rocky Mount, Edgecombe officials chide Nash board over schools split – Rocky Mount Telegram

The Political Agitator response: The video tells the whole story: Photos/Video: Edgecombe/Nash County Commissioners & Rocky Mount City Council Meet To Discuss School Split Mess

Edgecombe County and Rocky Mount officials expressed their adamant opposition to a split of Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools along county lines at a joint meeting Friday.

The Nash County Board of Commissioners that voted 4-3 to seek legislation to realign the school system dropped out of the meeting earlier this week.

Councilman Andre Knight called Nash commissioners Robbie Davis and Wayne Outlaw cowards for not attending the meeting. Davis and Outlaw have been outspoken in their desire to divide the school system along county lines.

Knight said the school split was part of a conspiracy by members of the tea party in the N.C. General Assembly to turn back the hands of time. (Source: Read more)

Video/Photos: Edgecombe County Commissioners Passes Budget 4-3 Down Racial Lines Voting For A 3.5% Tax Increase And No Reduction In Force

The Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners continued a recessed meeting on Monday June 30, 2014 7 PM. The meeting was called to order followed by a prayer.

During the Public Hearing with a standing room only and citizens sitting in the hallway listening to the comments via speakers in the hallway. One side of the room was a majority of School Administrators and the other side was Department of Social Services Administrators. Several citizens from both sides of the room and a couple from the hallway spoke out against the most recent proposed budget that had been on display to be voted on last night. All of the speakers asked the commissioners to reconsider the budget proposal on the table.

See the comments and the motions that were made, motions that died due to a lack of a 2nd and withdrawal of support. I feel the last motion that was made was the best motion and it pass 4-3 along racial lines. I strongly support the vote and I am still trying to figure out what the 3 commissioners whom voted against the motion interest they had in mind because it damn sure was not the county employees. However it was evident they wanted to make sure they looked out for the school system and didn’t give a damn about the Department of Social Services. It is evident that the majority of the school employees are white and the majority of the Department of Social Services are black. But that should not have been an issue because they ought to have been concerned about all of the employees.

Evans discusses children health with Board of Education – Daily Southerner

TARBORO — Chronic diseases, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s) and teen pregnancy. Those are some of the health issues facing students in Edgecombe County Public Schools.

Eric Evans, Edgecombe County Human Services Director and Assistant County Manager, talked about those health concerns in a presentation at Monday board of education meeting.

Evans told the board he thought having the conversation about the youth health problems was a “good step” toward addressing some of those problems. – See more at: http://www.dailysoutherner.com/community/x787214694/Evans-discusses-children-health-with-Board-of-Education#sthash.LyeSwbIc.dpuf

Response: I have nothing against John Edmondson and I feel he will do a good job on the board. However after seeing the interview held by the board members, if they were going by the interview, then I feel strongly that the Social Services Director Marva Scott should have been appointed. The following story validates what she would bring to the table. But this is just my damn ignant ass opinion. We are living in times when folks who should be making wise decisions allow mess to stand in the way but then they wonder why the children do what they do. Oh hell, I mean oh well!

Response: I remember there has been some bus issues for years. Some folks didn’t want to drive school buses so they went and got doctor’s notes. But guess who the majority of them were? Recently the school system changed their policy and started the process over. But those folks with real disabilities got caught up in the system so therefore they had to leave the school system since they couldn’t drive the bus. It is sad because some folks really screwed it up for some folks. I just wonder could the school system had found a better way to deal with the busing issue. Well can’t wait to see how the lawsuits unfold.

TARBORO — Diahanna Woods and Donnie Atkinson, former employees of Edgecombe County Public Schools, filed lawsuits against the Edgecombe County Board of Education after they were terminated. Woods filed her complaint on May 30, 2013, and Atkinson filed his complaint on Aug. 28, 2013, in the federal court in Greenville.

Woods and Atkinson claim they were fired because of their failure to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), and that they had medical disabilities which prevented them from driving a school bus. They cited the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as grounds for their claims. (Source: Read more)
