Manager hired to run event center – Rocky Mount Telegram

image_thumb[1]A general manager has been named for the Downtown Event Center.

Marcus Murrell recently was hired by Sports Facilities Management with input from city officials. His annual salary is set at $105,000. He begins his duties Nov. 27.

Murrell will run the show at Rocky Mount’s multimillion-dollar facility, which is under construction.

The center is expected by city officials to be an indoor sports destination for the region and beyond. The unique facility not only will cater to sporting tournaments but also has the capacity to accommodate other events, including concerts and conventions.

Murrell brings more than 15 years of experience in the event industry to Rocky Mount, with his most recent duties being an operations director for the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, S.C., and the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Fla. (Rocky Mount Telegram)

Lawmaker’s attempt to require referendum on event center fails – Rocky Mount Telegram

The Political Agitator’s response: Again it makes no sense that Rep. Collins is trying to push the good ole boys agenda in Rocky Mount trying to keep the current City Council from moving forward with certain projects. It was no problem when the council was a white majority. It appears Collins joined the Community Council and some others whom are trying to discredit the current council.

Local and state officials are delighted a bill meant to limit event center construction financing has failed in the N.C. House.

Not happy is N.C. Rep. Jeff Collins, R-Nash, who tried to push through legislation in the N.C. General Assembly’s final days of this session that would have required a referendum vote on the proposed $32 million downtown community facility in Rocky Mount.

The bill was introduced in the N.C. House Rules Committee as an add-on to previously considered S.B. 363, which dealt with expanding food service at public events. The committee voted unanimously against the bill late Monday night.

Crowd hears about facility plan – Rocky Mount Telegram

The Political Agitator’s response: So glad that a local architect Victor Vines formerly of Pinetops NC was hired, awesome! Can’t wait to see the final product and being able to go to the facility.

A small crowd gathered Monday night in the Rocky Mount City Council chambers to hear from the team hired to design and build the proposed downtown community facility.

The facility, estimated to cost $32 million, is proposed to be built north of the Douglas Block in downtown Rocky Mount and serve not only as a venue for indoor sports, but concerts, graduations and conventions.

“I will say this facility is very flexible and, as you see the elements of the building today, I hope you’ll agree with me on that,” City Manager Charles Penny told the audience. “The building really is like a gym on steroids that can host a variety of events beyond youth and amateur sports.”

The consultant team showed the attendees visualizations of how the facility’s entrance would face Northeast Main Street, but the other sides of the building would use a mixture of building materials – including glass – to be welcoming to the public from all the surrounding thoroughfares. Vines Architecture President and Principal-in-Charge Victor Vines described the project as a 360-degree site, integrating the historic setting and new development in the downtown area. Rocky Mount NC: Council studies prospects for downtown event center – Rocky Mount Telegram

The walls of the committee room at City Hall were lined with residents interested in a feasibility study of a proposed downtown event center during the bulk of Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

“We met with as many people as we could that are considered stakeholders or potential users. One of the major themes we heard was that a lot of events here are outgrowing the existing facilities or don’t exist because there is no facility for them in Rocky Mount,” said David Stone, associate principal of AECOM, which prepared the study with Sink Combs Dethlefs Sports Architecture. “There are events that have grown beyond the capacity of Rocky Mount facilities, but we were told a lot of those would come back to Rocky Mount if there was an appropriate destination to host them.” (More)
