I supported TJ Walker during the 2019 Election because I was hoping that he could be able to give young Black Males some hope especially because he know a lot of young Black males in Rocky mount.
It was hard for me to not to support Elaine Burnette Williams because we were losing the only Black female on the council since Lois Watkins chose not to seek re-election. I am for strong Black female leadership especially when the women are the ones that make things happen the majority of the time. If they are not holding elected offices and/or serving in leadership roles they are the backbone of the community when it comes to political and community activism.
Now that Chris Miller is the only female on the council and just happen to be a Caucasian, I can’t imagine how it feel to be the only female. Miller has to deal with being a target just because she just happens to vote on certain things that the majority Black council majority vote on so she is said to be going along with them. Well I knew Miller before she became an councilwoman. I attended the Rocky Mount Common Ground meetings that she either founded and/or co-founded.
When Common Ground began it started out trying to reach the business community, ministers elected officials and other. Common Ground didn’t get much participation but when it was opened up to non-elected officials everyday people, the group that I was in we continued to meet until the Common Ground Group faded out due to many of the members had family obligations that they had to attend to.
I know it has to be hard for Councilwoman Chris Miller to have to deal with the male perspectives on the council especially when it is clear that Mayor Sandy Roberson and Councilman Lige Daughtridge has an agenda of their own. It is clear that the Black majority councilmembers are going to be chastised no matter what they do.
Thank you Councilwoman Miller for continuing to serve and for doing what you feel is in the best interest of the citizens of Rocky Mount. Although I may not agree with some of the stands you have taken, I respect you but will let you know how I feel when I disagree.
Councilman TJ Walker please make good choices. Although you are new to the council, I know you are smart enough to figure out what is in the best interest of all the citizens. Listen to what all of the councilpersons has to say but then think carefully before voting a certain way. You must always keep in mind that when you vote on something you need to have a reason why you voted up or down on an issue.
Yes you were voted in by citizens from all walks of life however you need to keep in mind that at the end of the day you are a young Black Male and you need to know that all folk are watching you especially young Black males and females.
I ain’t trying to tell you what to do but just letting you know that I and others are watching you.
