Pinetops NC – In Response To “Will There Ever Be Justice For . . . By Rev. Nehemiah Smith Jr. (The Weekly Defender)

Note: I had written this response on yesterday and the 1st person I shared it with told me they would not give the Rev. any publicity. However since I read my response to this person I have received several messages asking me when was I going to respond because they wanted to hear my opinion. When I ran into one of my elderly faithful supporters this evening in a restaurant she was talking to me about this situation. I said I had written a response but had not posted it. Well oops here it is!

Will there ever be Justice for Star? (Opinion in The Weekly Defender)

by Nehemiah Smith, Jr.

It has been more than a week and the monsters that committed and were complicit in the sexual assault that shattered the innocence of a two-year-old Pinetops toddler now sit in the Edgecombe County Detention Center awaiting trial. Many believe that justice has been served because the perpetrators have been apprehended. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

(I have not spoke to one person who has stated that justice has been served just because the 2 people have been arrested. Anyone in their right mind ought to know that justice can not be served until the 2 people goes to trial and the verdict is rendered.

So I agree, “Nothing could be farther from the truth!”)

There is a more ominous issue that, in my opinion, may hinder this family’s quest for justice. The investigation aside, as well as all of the unfounded innuendo and misinformation, there are still those in our community who are bent on somehow laying the blame for this child’s attack at the mother’s door.

(How in the hell can you question the investigation when you have not been privy to those who have done the investigation? I would think that would be out of the norm for the investigators to share information with you to a large degree. So if they have shared anything with you it would be very small.

Unfounded and innuendo and misinformation? How in the hell can you determine that?

Hell yeah the mother plays a role in what has happened to this child be it voluntarily or involuntarily. Unless the mother can prove that she did not know the character of the female who was arrested then many will continue to question why these children were in the care of this 20 year old white female.

But inspite of all of that a parent is responsible for the welfare of their children. Sir as far as I know you don’t have any children so maybe you have a different outlook of a parent’s role than those of us who does. Maybe you are looking at it from a village standpoint and not from a parent’s role first and foremost. I am the father of 2 females and 1 male and I take full responsibility for the welfare of my children.)

When I first heard about this terrible incident, I had the opportunity to interview the child’s mother; and aside from the genuine pain, anger, and frustration in her voice, there was, just under the surface of her visible anguish, an inconsolable sense of guilt.

(So you interviewed the mother one time and you can determine that her pain is genuine. I hope so however considering the circumstances that is questionable and many are waiting to find out the whole truth. Well to me your observation is premature.)

And with that comes inevitable questions and second guesses.

“Why did I let this girl keep my child? Were there any warning signs that she was this type of person? Am I a bad mother?”

Those questions, though understandable, are really unfair.

(I be damn if the questions above is unfair in my opinion. One reason is because I have received many messages and have spoken to many who thinks the very questions are a concern of theirs. If I was approached by the mother to help her with this situation these are some questions along with many others that I would have for her. You see I would need to know much about the mother and the relationship with the 2 people arrested. I would do a thorough investigation on all involved, I repeat all and that would begin with the mother.)

There is an adage that says, “It takes a village to raise a child;” but, it takes that same village to protect a child.

(Damn I am confused you say, “It takes a village to raise a child;” but, it takes that same village to protect a child.” In my opinion this is one in the same. However I can’t help raise someone else child without the parent/s allowing me to. When I spend time with other folks children they tell me to treat them just like they are my own. I tell these children that they can hang out with my son and I if they keep their grades up and if they respect their parent/s in most cases it is the mothers who are raising these children.)

And when there arises a situation like this, it takes a village to support the family of the child and seek justice.

(You say it takes a village to support the family of the child and seek justice. This can only happen when I know the whole truth and when the legal system has been exhausted. Until that time there is nothing I can do.)

So, what would be justice in this case? Justice would be taking the necessary steps to insure that the magistrate who wrote the original $1500 bond never writes another bond in Edgecombe County (or any other county).

(Really? Can you share with me how you come to that conclusion? Did the magistrate break some law that I am unaware of? However I totally agree the bond may could have been set higher but then again I don’t know the guidelines for issuing bonds. I don’t know if the magistrate showed bias or not. But for me that is not my biggest concern.

Everybody that I have spoken to have an issue with the bond however as I stated in a previous response, I believe the bond would either be set higher and/or reduced depending upon the ongoing investigation. I don’t think anyone is concerned about the current bond after the investigation moved to the next level and the 2 were arrested.)

Justice would be that Chelsea Speight be charged with the same offenses as the sick individual who assaulted Star.

(How can you say Speight should be charged with the same offense? Obviously the investigation up until the point of the 2nd arrest do not show that she should be charged with the same offense because their bonds were different.)

Justice would be that these two individuals never breathe “free” air again.

More important to the movement for Justice for Star is that the community put aside its petty differences and divisiveness and come together in the spirit of unity.

(How can the community put aside its petty differences and divisiveness and come together in the spirit of unity when we don’t know the whole truth with this incident? When we learn the whole truth then we can make an informed opinion so until then we will not take your word as the gospel. Everyone I have spoken to, received emails, messages and etc. have stated they are for justice so that is not an issue. However they want to know the whole truth.)

In doing so, we send the clear message that we will not tolerate the abuse and exploitation of our children and that we will not accept the continued disrespect by the justice system when it comes to meting out justice for all.

(I am a little confused because everyone that I know do not tolerate the abuse and exploitation of our children and do not accept being disrespected by the justice system. So how did you come to that conclusion especially when the justice system has not ruled on this case?)

As a people, we are a mere shell of what we used to be. We seem to be afraid or unwilling to die for things that are worthwhile; but we kill each other over frivolous tomfoolery.

(So what about this case that brings you to the conclusion that we are afraid or unwilling to die for things that are worthwhile?)

Our forefathers fought, bled and died that we might be in a better place and position at this juncture in human history. And yet, it seems as though we are regressing and not progressing. Perhaps this is because there is more of a concern for the individual than for the whole.

(What? Damn I am confused?)

And as long as this is our reality, there will never be justice for Star or any of the other millions of bright Stars in our universe.

(As long as we have ignant damn college educated folks who think folks like myself who only has a high school diploma and/or less is more ignant than you are then there will be no justice.

This article is nothing but frivolous tomfoolery (in your words) and ignance at its best. Who are you to tell us how we should view this particular case when we do not have all of the details. I don’t know the mother nor the 2 people arrested so it would be ignant on my behalf to respond to the lack of justice when the trial has not begun and no verdict has been handed down.

What is sad is you are playing upon folks like myself intelligence by writing what some would think is a pretty good article but has little substance when it comes to justice for . . . .)

Nehemiah Smith Jr. Responds To My Open Letter On Justice For . . . Facebook Page

In response to: Ignant Column: Pinetops NC – Open Letter To Rev. Nehemiah Smith Jr. Editor The Weekly Defender Rocky Mount NC In Response To Your Speech At The Car Wash Concerning The Child Abuse Case

I thought it was about Justice for Star

I usually wouldn’t respond; but, after a call from a friend and another from a colleague, and after having an opportunity to read Mr. Curmilus Dancy’s post, I relented. There are number of “points” made by Mr. Dancy with which I take exception.

Does who the family is, who the friends and associates are, where the people live, and who they hang out with, take away from the fact that the little girl was assaulted? I contend that these factors don’t matter. The young girl’s mother could be the worst mother ever and that does not take away from the fact that the child was assaulted.

(I did not mention the child’s name nor the mother in my open letter so again showing his ignance.)

Mr. Dancy wrote, “Rev. you know I know you don’t care for Rev. Andre Knight President of the NAACP so you have found another avenue to attempt to make him and our branch look ignant. Well sir again you have been consistent because you continue to make yourself look ignant. You see I posted on my blog the NAACP was not going to show up that I had spoke to Rev. Andre Knight and the State President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II but no you go to this meeting and talk about we should have been there.”

Believe it or not Mr. Dancy, this situation is not about Mr. Knight, you, or me. It’s about a child who was assaulted and how the person whose care she was in at the time got a $1,500 bond. Ministers, community and political leaders, the NAACP, and others didn’t show up. Okay. It just makes me wonder what would have happened to the adulterous woman if Jesus hadn’t shown up. How much longer would the man have lain at the pool of Bethesda if Christ wouldn’t have decided to stop by? How much longer would the buses in Montgomery have remained segregated if Rosa Parks had not taken a seat? Had the Rev. Dr. William Barber not spoken up and out about the inequities proposed by the Wake County School Board, how much longer would they have gone unchecked? But in each of the instances that I mentioned, the individuals understood and subscribed to one of the noblest of understandings, perhaps best put forth by philosopher Jeremy Bentham, "It is the greatest good to the greatest number of people which is the measure of right and wrong."

(More ignance. Like I said you don’t pick and choose those you name battles. If it was okay why in the hell did you call those names out? Why didn’t you just talk about the baby but hell no you talked about who didn’t show up and they needed to be put in check. Comparing all of that other stuff to this case is just ignant.)

Was it wrong that the aforementioned groups and individuals didn’t show up? Perhaps, then again, what I said was my opinion. Whether people subscribe to it is up to them. But even my opinion doesn’t overshadow the fact that a two-year-old child was assaulted.

(But if it was all about the child why in the hell did you go there? Again more ignance. When the SBI and the Edgecombe County Sheriff Department release their findings then and only then is when we can have somewhere to begin but right now we don’t know who assaulted the child.)

And as for the revelation that you don’t buy my paper, that’s okay too. There are many who do. The Weekly Defender if doing great; thank God. And still, this two-year-old innocent child deserves justice.

(The Weekly Defender doing great? That’s good but I seen a lot of papers lying around today. Oh hell yeah I think I can speak for all of those you named that “this two-year-old innocent child deserves justice!” But until there is a name attached to the assault what in the hell do you have?)

When the SBI and the Sheriff’s Department release their findings, I will report them. No matter what they say or where they may lead. The issue here is that a two-year-old child was assaulted. So, whoever did it, may they be brought forward to answer for their crimes.

(So in the meantime you have the time to talk about other folks not showing up because you did. I ain’t mad with you for showing up but damn it now don’t get mad because I didn’t.)

Finally, you said, “Rev. I don’t appreciate you coming to Pinetops and misleading my people when I tried to be truthful with them and not selling them a bunch wolf tickets. Yeah some got mad with me but one thing about it at the end of the day truth will stand.”

I never questioned your sincerity. I’m sorry Moses (just a little levity here; let’s not get too serious). However, the real issue here is that an innocent two-year-old child was assaulted and she deserves justice. I read somewhere that some common traits among successful leaders are their ability to deflect praise, accept blame, and shun self-aggrandizement.

(I’ll take that being called “Moses” that is something you have been consistent about since moving here and attacking folks who are doing things in the community unlike your want a be ignant ass.)

As I stated earlier, I usually wouldn’t respond; and the only reason I had not responded is because I was unaware of the post until someone who reads your blog told me about it. That said, I wish you the best in your continued efforts to realize some semblance of justice in your community. I will continue to do the same; and I know that no matter where the investigation leads, we both want justice for the innocent two-year-old girl who was assaulted.

(Yeah you said that in my last open letter to you that someone told you but as long as you got the message that was my mission.)

Be blessed.

(Likewise my brother.)

Ignant Column: Pinetops NC – Open Letter To Rev. Nehemiah Smith Jr. Editor The Weekly Defender Rocky Mount NC In Response To Your Speech At The Car Wash Concerning The Child Abuse Case

First of all you know me and I know you. You have my phone number and other contact information so sir since you didn’t take the time out to contact me so I am going to post my response on my Blog which automatically goes to my Facebook Page and Twitter account.

Rev. Nehemiah Smith Jr. who are you referring to when you say other groups they ought to had been at the Car Wash in Pinetops on Saturday evening?

Okay you said put the ministers in check, community leaders in check, put the NAACP in check because they are not here. You said the elected officials show up every 4 years when they want your vote. You said when I need you most you can’t be found.

You said you understand the Sheriff Office has to do his job and wait on the investigation and there is nothing they can really do but they could show up. You repeated just show your face.

You said people ought to be willing to die for something or fall for anything. What? Is this really about dying for a cause?

Then after all of the above bull manure then you finally said something that made sense. If on Facebook you don’t know what is going on just be quiet until the investigation is over. You said nobody knows but the child and the person who did it. You said be there for the child and the mother if they need something.

Rev. I do not live in the city limits of Pinetops however I do consider myself a community leader in Edgecombe County which includes Pinetops. I am a Life Fully Paid Member of the NAACP.

Rev. I support my Sheriff Office and I played a major role in the appointment during the election of the current Sheriff dating back to 1996. At any time when I have issues with the Edgecombe County Sheriff Department I pick up the phone and contact them and I share my concerns.

Rev. my question to you is who in the hell do you think you are? You don’t think we can pick and choose our battles?

Rev. before I get involved with others I investigate the folks be it family, friends/associates and other who are involved so I will know who I am dealing with. I then investigate the issue so that I can attempt to find out all sides of a story. I will not allow folks to make a damn fool out of me. Now if you choose to operate like that then so be it but Rev. you know me and I know you and I must say that you have been consistent.

Rev. you know I know you don’t care for Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II but no you go to this meeting and talk about we should have been there. How ignant. On top of all of that I have stressed that this is not a NAACP issue at the moment.

Rev. can’t wait for someone to give me one of your papers because I have refused to buy one because you continue to show just how ignant you can be.

But Rev. whenever you have a problem with me please post it somewhere or contact me however it does not matter because when I find out about it I will respond. Actually I was hoping you were going to come up to me at the Princeville meeting on Monday night, you normally do when we attend the meetings. So since you didn’t here we go.

And then I want to see what you print in your newspaper after the findings are released by the SBI and the Edgecombe County Sheriff Department. Rev. that is where I stand and if you were a good journalist you would have waited for all sides to report in.

Rev. I don’t appreciate you coming to Pinetops and misleading my people when I tried to be truthful with them and not selling them a bunch wolf tickets. Yeah some got mad with me but one thing about it at the end of the day truth will stand.

When looking at statistics, be careful where you get your knowledge – Rocky Mount Telegram

Response: This is one of the problems I have had with Rev. Nehemiah Smith and I have told him that. He came back to Rocky Mount speaking out and then started a newspaper but putting out misleading information. I told him I admire him for trying to educate the community about what is going on but he can not report misleading information.

How can he say he is non-bias when he has attacked Rev. Andre Knight for the longest time and the city council without doing his homework. I have seen him at meetings even in Wilson at the NCEMPA meeting and he still do not give Knight the credit where credit is due. Hell Smith you don’t have to like the man but I challenge you to just report the truth and if you don’t know you need to ask somebody. C. Dancy II – The Political Agitator

Open letter to the Reverend Nehemiah Smith Jr. Who Has Been Attacking The Rocky Mount City Council About The High Utilities

Rev. Smith I had the opportunity to speak to you briefly while I was having a conversation with Bronson Williams who has also been attacking the council. You asked me a couple of questions and I gave you a couple of answers however I will not get into that at the moment.

Rev. Smith you asked me had I read your newspaper The Weekly Defender and you proceeded to give me one. You asked me what did I think about it? I said I have read every edition because I have been given a copy. I said I have an opinion however I do not wish to share my opinion at the moment but I will in the future.

Well sir I am going to share a few of my opinions now. If you don’t know, now you know I like to deal with folks in writing as much as I can and this is one conversation that I would have to have in writing or on my pocket computer so my comments can’t get twisted.

First of all I remember when you were on The Promise Radio Station along with owner Bronson Williams attacking the council members specifically Rev. Andre Knight. You and Williams had a ball for a couple of months however I had tuned the radio station out early on. You can find my response to ya’ll when you google your name and it reads: Bronson Williams, Nehemiah Smith Jr. vs Rev. Andre Knight and … I see that was not enough because you have begin to publish a well formatted and beautifully laid out weekly newspaper.

Boy is this newspaper what the black community needs in the local area. I have been telling black folks for years that we needed our own newspaper and those (who could a should a) made it happen did nothing. Well I was doing an internet newsletter until a former local newspaper reporter turned me on to blogging and it has worked for me. I receive several hundreds hits per day.

Back to your beautifully laid out newspaper. When I heard about it I said okay he is going to sure nuff attack the councilmembers now especially Rev. Andre Knight. Every paper has actually done such and then in the edition about 3 Thursdays ago you basically said you were out to get the council.

Well sir black folks can’t get a damn simple letter to the editor in the local newspapers at all and if we do they reword, leave out crucial words and etc. so that our real message be lost and will not go out to their subscribers. So sir your paper could give us that outlet that has been much needed in this area whereby we can get our messages out. We could wake up black folks because there is a force out there that do not want the truth to be made known.

Sir I have no problem with you challenging the council and/or Rev. Andre Knight but do your homework. I find some of the things you say to be downright disgusting but that is because I know the councilmembers and Knight and the issues especially the utilities thingy.

As I close I want to leave an example of a recent problem that I had with The Daily Southerner local newspaper. You can read the following article on my blog, “That Racist Daily Southerner Strikes Again As It Relates To The Edgecombe County Public Schools Restructuring Proposal. What In The Hell Is Terry Smith Problem?
