Note: This is letter 4 of 4 to all candidates.
Sir you are on my facebook page and I posted the following on January 12, 2014, “Rep. Joe Pat Tolson House District 23 Will Not Seek Re-election Sources Say.” I stated the following, “I live in the district and very much concerned about the seat being filled. If you are interested in filing for this seat please send me an inbox or call me at 252.314.5484 asap.” I made the request above and it was up to you to contact me. Nope nobody has to contact me but if one wants my vote it would be wise especially since I am a blogger and have many, many followers locally and across the state and nation.
When I read the following on January 15, “Knight to seek state house seat?” I called you and asked you why you were running because we both knew that Attorney William Solomon may have filed since he ran against Rep. Joe Pat Tolson during the last election. You explained to me why you were running. However we had had a conversation some time ago about this seat.
I thank you for calling me before you filed and sharing your intentions however at that time I told you that I would wait until the filing period closes before I will respond to who I would be supporting but I did think that I would be supporting you. Mind you at this time Attorney William Solomon had told me he was probably going to file so therefore it would have been 3 of you at that time. I also told you that I would try calling a meeting with all of those whom have filed when the filing period closed.
I remember when I used to have a radio talk show in Tarboro back in the day and you and a couple of others used to come to my show every week as I educated folks about politics. I somewhat feel that you and the others learned much from me during that time. When the Senate District 3 seat was first drawn a black female from Bertie County was running and I supported her. However I knew that it was in the making to change the lines again after the first 2 years and she would be drawn out of the district. But I felt strongly that if she was elected it would be a good thing because 1st of all the seat was created for a black and then maybe it would be easier to get another black person elected when she was drawn out of the district.
During that next 2 years Shelly Willingham was running for the Senate District 3 seat that was created for a black person and you and another person chose to support Senator Clark Jenkins a white millionaire here in Edgecombe County. I was mad as hell with you and the other person because I felt that ya’ll used what I had shared with you about why I was going to support Willingham in spite of and you went out and supported Jenkins.
Over the years as we continue to be a member and work in the Democratic Party I have watched your moves. Although we have disagreed on some things over the years, I was glad to see you participate in the Edgecombe County Democratic Party on the Executive Committee over the years.
As a young man I was happy to see you seek the office of Tarboro City Council where you now serve as the Mayor Pro-tem. I strongly feel you have represented the citizens of Tarboro very well. So therefore I am willing to support you. I am willing to support you because in spite of some things you have gone through you have strived hard to be a productive young man. Although you have had some personal things you had to endure you are an example to young folks that you can turn your life around and be very productive. You know I do not support Charter Schools and still believe in Public Schools. I told you since you were going to be a part of the Charter School system that I was glad that you chose to take a paid position versus continuing to serve on the non-paid board because you were struggling to find a job.
I am officially announcing that you will get my vote to represent me in the NC House 23 District.
Note: This is letter 3 of 4 to all candidates.
Well sir you are not on my facebook page however my page is open to all and I posted the following on January 12, 2014, “Rep. Joe Pat Tolson House District 23 Will Not Seek Re-election Sources Say.” I stated the following, “I live in the district and very much concerned about the seat being filled. If you are interested in filing for this seat please send me an inbox or call me at 252.314.5484 asap.” Maybe you missed it or you just didn’t care but whatever the reason I made the request above and it was up to others to contact me. Nope nobody has to contact me but if one wants my vote it would be wise especially since I am a blogger and have many, many followers locally and across the state and nation.
Several days later on January 15 and January 17 the following articles ran in the local newspaper, “Knight to seek state house seat?” and “Willingham ponders District 23 run.” I spoke to Knight and Willingham about their intentions so therefore I was aware of their intentions. I also spoke with Will Solomon and he said he was not going to file.
Sir I don’t know you on a personal note but know of your name because of the business you are in such as realty and the golf course that you once had set up on Hwy 258 just outside of the Tarboro City limits. I don’t recall ever seeing you attend an Edgecombe County Democratic Party County meeting. I have never heard of you being involved in politics involuntarily. So therefore when I learned on the last day of filing that you had filed, I was somewhat surprised. But I can understand your logic because with 3 blacks in the race which will split the black votes, it appears that you a white male can have a great opportunity to possibly be able to win the seat or atleast cause a run-off.
Well sir as long as there is another candidate in the race that I can support, I will not be able to support you. I don’t know you like that. So if you will, will you please tell me why I should vote for you? What is your political platform? Why do you feel you can best represent me and black folks in this district since the district was created for a black person?
In my closing, I regret that you chose to file for the House seat however know that you are now a public figure and it is on. I don’t know you and you don’t know me but we can get to know each other.
I am one of the most publicly active Democrats in Edgecombe County and I have been challenging all Democrats especially elected officials since I first became active in the early 90’s. I am a videographer and blogger so therefore I capture meetings, events and etc. I post them on my blog while making comments and giving others the opportunity to see things for themselves and after watching the entire video they can agree or disagree with me and most of all make an informed decision versus getting bits and pieces of what happened from the local newspapers.
Stay tuned for letter 4 of 4 to the other candidate coming soon.
TARBORO — Tarboro Mayor Pro Tem Taro Knight is seriously considering running for North Carolina House District 23 seat currently held by Rep. Joe Tolson. Tolson, 63, is a retired educator from Pinetops who is serving his 17th year as District 23 representative as a Democrat.

Sources say Rep. Joe P. Tolson will not seek re-election for the May Primary. He has served 9 terms. The district is a make up of Edgecombe and Martin Counties. The district is majority black. I live in the district and very much concerned about the seat being filled.
If you are interested in filing for this seat please send me an inbox or call me at 252.314.5484 asap.
Rumor was for a while that Rep. Joe Pat Tolson was not going to seek re-election but I had not heard it from anyone that I felt I could really think much of it. I didn’t think much of it.
The NC House 23 seat consist of all of Edgecombe and all of Martin Counties during the 2012 election. The current district consist of some of Wilson and some of Edgecombe.
I don’t know the racial make up of the district however I believe it should be close to a 50 – 50 black to white majority.
I would like to hear from the folks in the House District 23 what are your thoughts about this race?
