Senate District 3 Race

Senator Carol Moseley Braun Endorses “A Different Kind of Senator”

Dear Curmilus –

I don’t usually get involved in Democratic primary contests, but this race was too important to stay on the sidelines.  In North Carolina we have three candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, but one stands out above the rest.  That candidate is Ken Lewis.

I know what it takes to defeat an incumbent. I have seen Ken’s ability to connect with young voters, progressives, and African Americans, the same groups that drove Barack Obama to victory in North Carolina in 2008.  In an off year election where Democrats are not showing high levels of engagement, Ken is the best candidate to inspire and turn out the coalition of voters that will be necessary to defeat Senator Burr in November.

Your help will ensure Democrats put forward the best candidate to defeat Richard Burr.

But this primary election is about more than political calculation.

Ken Lewis represents a significant opportunity for the State of North Carolina and our country: The opportunity to change the U.S. Senate by changing the kind of Senators we send there.

Ken Lewis’ background is not like that of most U.S. Senators.  He worked as a janitor, bus driver and fast food employee to put himself through Duke University and then Harvard Law School.

In this down economy he would bring a unique set of skills to the Senate, having spent two decades helping businesses create jobs in nearly every industry in North Carolina.

At a time when Americans feel forgotten by political insiders, Ken would bring a unique set of experiences, deeply rooted in the community organizations and non-profit associations he has served.

As Senator, Ken will be responsive to the needs of North Carolinians.  He’ll serve the people of North Carolina because that’s what he’s done all his life.

That is why I am supporting Ken’s campaign.

One stop early voting has already begun in North Carolina.  Election Day is May 4. The campaign is nearing the finish.  Ken needs your vote, and he needs your help to get his message out, organize precincts, and turn out voters.

Your donation will ensure that all North Carolina voters hear Ken’s winning message. Your contribution will go toward field organizers, literature, yard-signs, media and other concrete expenses that will make a real difference in this race.

Now is not the time to sit on the sidelines.  We have a chance to make history in North Carolina just as I made history in Illinois two decades ago.  Ken offers an historic opportunity to make our U.S. Senate a more representative, well-informed, and inclusive place.

This is our time. Ken is our candidate.  He’ll be our Senator, if we all do our part.

Thank you for your support!

Former United States Senator Carol Moseley Braun

Follow the Money in NC Political Races-Burr has raised over $8 Million. So Where Does That Leave You?

There should be an entirely separate category for this crap called WTF RICHARD BURR.  While the Democratic candidates are running all over NC; talking to the middle class citizens learning what we need just to be able to survive, Richard Burr is sitting back counting his cash!

Do you care about your child’s education? If you said YES, Richard Burr will not help you because you and your child probably don’t have a Political Action Committee. (See Who Are Giving The Cash @ Behind The Scenes Of A TV Show)

I’m supporting Ken Lewis because I believe he is the best candidate to carry this fight forward in the U.S. Senate – Former Congresswoman Eva Clayton

Dear Curmilus,

This is former Congresswoman Eva Clayton. With the May 4 election approaching people have been wondering where I stand. I’m writing today to tell you that I’m standing with Ken Lewis.

As the first woman elected to Congress from the State of North Carolina, I have spent my career fighting for working women and families, and doing my own small part to ameliorate the injustices and inequities we see in the Unites States and around the world. I’m supporting Ken Lewis because I believe he is the best candidate to carry this fight forward in the U.S. Senate.

There isn’t anyone like Ken Lewis in the U.S. Senate. He represents the hopes of his grandmother, a sharecropper born on a North Carolina plantation who believed fiercely in the American Dream, even when it was denied to her.  And he carries with him the conviction of his own mother, a school teacher, that through hard work and commitment to our communities we can make this promise real.

I’m supporting Ken Lewis because he’ll be a committed advocate for people too long shut out of our political process: Women receiving less pay for the same work, families unable to afford basic health care, mothers forced to chose between putting food on the table and paying their electric bills.

In the U.S. Senate Ken Lewis will be a strong advocate for regular people, hard-hit in this down economy. But he needs our support now to help get him there.

Ken Lewis has spent his career providing legal services to community-based organizations and small businesses, helping to create jobs and expand opportunity.  He’s been a leader pushing for affordable housing, fighting predatory lending, and promoting early childhood education.

That’s the kind of experience we need right now in the Senate–experience grounded in the communities that our senators are meant to serve.

Please join me and support Ken Lewis for U.S. Senate. Together we can help build a brighter future for North Carolina and this country.

Sincerely,

Eva Clayton

But my question is we talk about Unity but when will it come a time that other folks will support qualified and intelligent black folks?

Kenneth Lewis was the 1st to announce that he would run for the US Senate. Then I seen where Democrats were calling out folks to run against Richard Burr and some decided not to such as Congressman Bob Etheridge. And then they called out Elaine Marshall and she accepted. But my question is, we talk about Unity but when will it come a time that other folks will support qualified and intelligent black folks?

The Biggest Endorsement of the Race

Dear Supporter,

Over the weekend we received some very good news: Congressman G.K. Butterfield has endorsed our campaign. It’s by far the biggest endorsement any candidate has received thus far in the race, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

The DailyKos declared it an "interesting twist" in the race and "fairly impressive." We’re getting more calls, more interest, and voters are really taking notice. Our campaign HQ is buzzing. This is a massive step forward for our campaign.

Can you thank the Congressman and help us carry this momentum forward by donating $20 to the campaign right now?

https://services.myngp.com/NGPOnlineServices/contribution.aspx?X=rlQlkVL17gXg+HPnSZ1s9Vdy5tAu/TKDkQ6Neo9iuBI=

Butterfield issued a strong statement backing our campaign:

"We share a heartfelt belief in the responsibility of making a difference in the lives of others and in our communities. Ken Lewis has a strong and optimistic vision of North Carolina’s future with the talent, leadership, energy and experience necessary to succeed. His experience in business and community development make him uniquely qualified to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate."

I thank Congressman Butterfield for his endorsement and look forward to him joining our campaign leadership team in the coming weeks. His endorsement confirms the strength that our campaign continues to gather all across North Carolina. People are responding to our message: strengthening the middle class, fostering innovation, and promoting progress. Every day, all across our great state, our message is resonating, people are listening, and our ranks are growing.

Help us keep up the momentum – please donate $20 today:

Former Durham Mayor and State Senator, Wib Gulley, announced his decision to endorse Ken Lewis

Dear Supporter,

Wib Gulley endorses Ken Lewis for U.S. Senate

Wanted to pass on some very exciting news from yesterday: former Durham Mayor and State Senator, Wib Gulley, announced his decision to endorse Ken Lewis in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Gulley’s endorsement is a big break for our campaign, and will help us continue to build our support in the Durham-area and across the state.

Can you help spread the news and grow our campaign by sending this email to five friends asking them to join us?

http://www.democratsenators.org/o/49/t/879/tellafriend.jsp?tell_a_friend_KEY=369

Gulley’s reasoning for supporting us is exactly why our campaign is gaining momentum across the State:

"I have always looked for candidates and public officials who want to do more than just fill a position or offer more of the same in politics. And that really is the point for all of us when we think about who North Carolina should elect as its US Senator next year. We need to do so much more than just elect another person to this important federal position. It’s true that our state and nation confront difficult economic and international issues, but we also need to choose a person who can help reinvigorate our democracy and build confidence in our federal government. In short, we need Ken Lewis."

Wib Gulley’s service as Durham mayor and in the State Senate was innovative and determined. He tackled real problems in Durham and across our state, from affordable housing, to revitalizing neighborhoods, to expanding public transportation. He was a leader that made a real difference in the lives of North Carolina’s working families — and that’s exactly the kind of leadership we’re trying to bring to the United States Senate.

We’re excited and honored to have Wib’s endorsement. Please help us spread the news:

Thanks for everything,

Lewis Campaign Picks Up Momentum in National Fundraising

Subject: Lewis Campaign Picks Up Momentum in National Fundraising

Dear Supporter,

The Lewis campaign is picking up momentum in national fundraising The Raleigh News & Observer reports:

Democratic Senate candidate Kenneth Lewis has received some help from one of the major heavy hitters in the Democratic Party.

Peter L. Buttenwieser of Philadelphia, a long-time Democratic fund raiser, gave Lewis (sic) $1,500 to Lewis, an attorney from Chapel Hill, who is trying to unseat Republican Sen. Richard Burr, according to Lewis’ latest campaign report.

Buttenwieser is well known in Democratic circles as a big-time fund raiser, Rob Christensen reports. He is also a major donor having contributed about $3 million to the Democratic Party or Democratic candidates during the past decade, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Lewis met Buttenwieser during a fund raising trip to Philly.

Lewis faces Secretary of State Elaine Marshall and possibly other candidates in next May’s Democratic primary.

Kenneth Lewis says on "the ladder to the American dream … each rung has become more unstable."

Dear Supporter,

I just read this great article in the Salisbury Post that I wanted to share with you. It’s been an amazing week. It started with an incredible announcement and the momentum has continued.

Please read the article and forward it on to at least 5 of your friends:

http://www.democratsenators.org/o/49/t/880/content.jsp?content_KEY=1700

Here are a few highlight quotes from Ken in the article that I wanted to share with you:

  • "I see a Washington right now that is based on political gain instead of based on real solutions," he said. "Richard Burr has been in Washington for 16 years and has had plenty of opportunity to improve North Carolina."
  • "Google Sen. Burr’s name," said Lewis. "You’re not going to find him leading the way out of the banking crisis. In the midst of the economic crisis, Sen. Burr has become the poster child of what’s wrong in Washington."
  • "Sen. Burr’s voice is silent when it needs to be heard," Lewis said. "He is more interested for standing up for the right wing than standing up for what is right."
  • "We’re going to be committed to hold hopes, dreams and promises in our hearts. Together we’re going to fight for the rest of us, and we know we can propel ourselves into a future of promise. Together we can take that fight all the way to the floor of the U.S. Senate."

This is just the beginning. As Ken said, every rung on the ladder of opportunity has become unstable…restoring the American dream is what this campaign is all about. But, whether or not we are able to fulfill the dream and the hope that this country embarked on last year is up to you.

The most important thing you can do right now to help this campaign is to find five friends, colleagues, family members, anyone you might know and get them to join you in supporting this campaign.

Please forward them this article and have them join us in this cause.

http://www.democratsenators.org/o/49/t/880/content.jsp?content_KEY=1700

Because, together, we can change North Carolina and America for the better.

Thank you for all that you do,

Holly
