Tarboro, N.C. — A 2-year-old child beaten beyond recognition at a babysitter’s house in Tarboro earlier this month was also sexually assaulted, authorities said Tuesday, after charging two people in the attack.
Cirilo Torido-Bastida, 41, of Macclesfield, faces two counts of first-degree forcible sex offense and one count of assault inflicting serious bodily injury. He was placed in the Edgecombe County jail Tuesday under a $855,000 secured bond.
Chelsey Elane Speight, 20, of Tarboro, was charged with accessory after the fact on all three counts and placed in the Edgecombe County jail under a $355,000 secured bond. (More)
Response: Well the Edgecombe County Sheriff Department said the findings would be released. I was willing to wait for the findings and had no reason to question their statements each time they spoke with the media.
I stated that if the findings released showed that the white female deserves a higher bond that it will happen. So the charges for the female are different than the previous charges so therefore the bond was set higher this time. (Did anyone notice the new picture of the female?)
I am so glad that folks like Rob Redmond gets it when he said that, “Justice isn’t always served instantaneously. And though my support was there & I would have been honored to have led the charge, I never signed the petition. The reason is because after a few days, I realized that the investigation was still ongoing. To me, there was never a need for a petition until the investigation was complete AND justice had not been served.” I totally agree with this brother however I realized it day one that the investigation was ongoing.
I am ashamed of some of the events and conversations that have taken place in the name of JUSTICE. Do anyone understand that this is just the beginning of a situation that is going to continue for quite some time? Do anyone understand what is going to take place in the next couple of days, weeks and years to come? I don’t think so. However again I am going to ask you to let’s talk about it especially those who have cussed me out when all I did was trying to make people understand that they needed to wait for the SBI and the Edgecombe County Sheriff Office to release their findings.
It is a damn shame that some folks want to make our fine Edgecombe County Sheriff Department look like the victim when they are sworn to serve the public. I strongly feel that our Edgecombe County Sheriff Department did an awesome job preparing the evidence while keeping the integrity of the office in check.
The following quotes from the Daily Southerner Monday November 12th Edition are right on point: “Sheriff James Knight has released very limited details of the investigation, citing the sensitivity of the case and noting he didn’t want to impede on the ongoing investigation.”
“Knight said his department has been working almost around the clock to solve this horrendous crime. He said DNA samples have been sent to SBI. Routine DNA samples take up to two weeks or more for the lab work to return. Knight asked for special treatment in this case and said he is expecting the results back by this week.”
"I have sympathy for this 2-year-old child," Knight said. "She didn’t deserve this. As the sheriff of Edgecombe County, I’m going to make sure that every rock is uncovered until we arrest everybody who has anything to do with this incident. I ask the public to please bear with us as we investigate this incident. We are not taking this lightly. This is a very sensitive case and we are doing everything that we can to make sure everybody that is involve will be prosecuted."
Now with that being said by our fine Edgecombe County Sheriff Department there have been some folks who have been very disrespectful. I have a problem with our Sheriff Department being disrespected because I know we have one of the best, if not the best Sheriff Department within the state of North Carolina. I have not read one comment whereby some of these folks who say they want Justice, thanking our fine Sheriff Department and the SBI for their work. However I did read whereby one person wanted to thank the people who came together putting pressure on the people to handle the case, not! The case was being handled whether the people came together or not. So let’s don’t get it twisted.
Rev. Nehemiah Smith editor of The Weekly Defender said at the gathering at the Pinetops Car Wash he understood the Sheriff Department had a job to do but they could show their face. Well Rev. I stand by my Sheriff Department and I appreciate how they handled this case. The Edgecombe County Sheriff Department, the ministers, the NAACP, elected officials and community leaders not showing up at the Car Wash had no bearing on this case whatsoever because the evidence was in the hands of the SBI. You see Rev. when you have a gathering of such, if you really seeking justice you would have invited the SBI and/or the Edgecombe County Sheriff Department to come and assure the people that they are working on the case.
Now I am going to be waiting patiently to see what happens next because my resources tell me that this is going to get ugly.
Someone called me tonight as I was walking in the SouthWest Edgecombe vs Nash Central Basketball game to ask me had I seen the news. I said no. They begin to tell me about the arrests. I said thanks I will pull it up on my phone but about that time I had got a text message from WRAL about the arrests. I was happy to know that the findings had been released and the arrests had been made because I am ready for this case to go to the next level.
