CSX terminal nears completion

The future CSX intermodal facility is scheduled to be complete sometime in September.

The Carolinas Gateway Partnership, which is a downtown Rocky Mount-based recruiter of businesses and industries, sent out the news via email.

Carolinas Gateway Vice President Oppie Jordan on Friday made clear to the Telegram that the project that has been taking shape across U.S. 301 from N.C. Wesleyan College has prompted inquiries from other prospects.

Jordan also said Rocky Mount is an emerging market that is being identified by site consultants and companies and that there is a lot of activity and excitement.

“It’s unbelievable,” Jordan said.

The future CSX facility, which is also called the Carolina Connector, is going to be a place for freight trains to arrive, with the freight to be off-loaded onto other trains or trucks for distribution. (Read more)

Candidate filing period for municipal elections wraps up

Filing for municipal elections in the Twin Counties has ended with the exception of one town whose filing period has been extended by one week and three municipalities whose elections have been delayed until next March.

The Town of Bailey will have a one-week extension on the filing period as not enough candidates filed to fill the open seats. That extended filing period will end at noon on July 23.

Two seats are opening up on the Town of Bailey Board of Commissioners. The seats now filled by Shelley B. Carroll and Dwan Hope Finch are up for grabs this year and neither commissioner filed for re-election. The only candidate that did file for election is Dillon Bissette.

The decision to extend filing in such cases was made pre-emptively last week by the Nash County Board of Elections. That board voted unanimously to extend filing dates for municipalities where not enough candidates had filed rather than fill those seats with write-in votes. (Read more)
