Rocky Mount NC – Mills unlikely to take back land if monument moved

Being a lifelong resident of Rocky Mount and the last president of Rocky Mount Mills, the yarn manufacturing company, I am getting calls for my thoughts on the recent action by the City Council with regards to the Confederate monument at Battle Park.

I am pleased six of the seven council members voted in favor of removing the monument. I, too, am in favor of removing the monument and storing it at a safe facility until a determination can be made for an appropriate location.

My current thoughts have evolved and are the result of conversations I have had with a number of people in a rational manner after checking my emotions at the door. I commend the city for the well-organized, thoughtful workshops they conducted a year or so ago about the monument.

Some concern has been expressed on social media about reversion rights for the plot of land if the monument is removed. Residents should rest assured if any reversion rights were put into play, as the last president of Rocky Mount Mills, I can say the reversion would be rejected or if necessary, any property in question would be deeded back to the City of Rocky Mount to be included with Battle Park.

In 1974, Rocky Mount Mills donated Battle Park, one it most valuable assets, to the City of Rocky Mount to be used as a public park for all the citizens of the Twin County area That desire remains in place and I am pleased the city is developing plans to further enhance the Battle Park experience.

Rocky Mount and the Twin Counties are on the cusp of an era of success and prosperity that hasn’t been evident in quite a number of years. May we all unite together to make the most of these times for all people.

NASCAR announced on Wednesday it would ban Confederate flags from its events, two days after the only black driver in the league’s top series called on NASCAR to make the change.

The flag will no longer be allowed at races or displayed at any NASCAR properties, the league said in a statement posted to its Twitter account.

“The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors, and our industry,” the statement said. (Read More)

Public sounds off about Confederate monument

imageThe Political Agitator’s response: Damn this post shows just how racist Bill West the reporter is. Hell he gave Clint Williams an entire article to attempt to discredit Rocky Mount City Councilman Andre Knight bringing up old the audit and other. Well damn Beth Wood NC State Auditor did her audit based on the call from J. Keith Harris Retired Fired Chief who also live in Nashville and was allowed to live there while being the Chief because of a waiver. Beth report her findings and a request for response from the city. The city responded and she said she turned her findings over to some agencies for them to see if there are any criminal activities and she was done with the audit. But she is mad as hell because the council released findings that she sent to them on a Thursday but she released the entire report on Friday. Now back to this article. It is a damn shame all of them young and especially Caucasian speakers from the Black Action Committee that spoke so eloquently for removing the Confederate Monument. It should have been an entire article for the young folk who are sick and tired of older Caucasians who are living off the backs of Black folk hard work but having to face Racism today.

Public sounds off about Confederate monument By WILLIAM F. WEST Staff Writer

The City Council on Monday heard from a line of speakers about the subject of the Confederate monument just south of the vehicle entrance to Battle Park.

In a 6-1 vote earlier during the regular meeting, the council approved a resolution formalizing the specifics of a 6-1 vote during the June 2 budget work session to remove the statue, which dates to 1917 and is just south of the U.S. 64 interchange with Benvenue Road.

The council’s action calls for putting the statue in storage in a safe place, pending further direction from the council.

Additionally on Monday evening, the council without dissent approved a resolution against racial injustice and declaring black lives matter.

Not long after the votes, the public input phase of Monday evening’s meeting began, with quite a number of supporters of the removal of the monument being whites and African Americans. (Read More)

Local resident chides city leaders over audit report

imageThe Political Agitator’s response: Well ain’t that a damn mess Clint Williams who now comes out from behind the sheet and publicly let everybody know he is not a resident of Rocky Mount. I have been familiar with this Ignant Racist Special C for years because he has come for Councilmen Andre Knight, Reuben Blackwell, myself and some other Black folk on WHIG-TV morning show. Ain’t it a mess Ignant and some more Ignant Racist Special Cs along with some Ignant Safe Negro Black Folk who also had a problem with me speaking out against the RACISM in Rocky Mount since I began in 1988 when I joined Black Workers for Justice. I have been a Life Fully Paid Member of the Rocky Mount NAACP whereby I joined the NAACP in 1992. I have worked in Rocky Mount since January 1987. I have served as Vice Chair of N.E.E.D. Inc. that is headquartered in Rocky Mount and serve Nash, Edgecombe & Wilson Counties until I was kicked off the Board by Commissioner Wayne Hines and former County Manager Joe Durham because the director had turned in his resignation and myself and some others were going to vote him out. He decided he wanted to stay on so Nash County Commissioners removed the treasurer William Hobbs and Edgecombe County Commissioners removed me. We were cleaning up N.E.E.D. back then. I was a member of a Rocky Mount Group co-founded by now Councilwoman Chris Miller. I have been a member of the Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee since the early 90’s and I represent all of Rocky Mount Edgecombe County. I have attended the Rocky Mount Human Relations Commission meetings back in the early 90’s. I served on the Rocky Mount Human Relations Commission for nearly a year until I was removed several months ago. I have attended numerous community meetings in Rocky Mount. I have family and friends in Rocky Mount and some high profile family in business and elected officials that did some powerful things and still doing some but I didn’t make it known and still don’t so that Ignant Racist Special Cs and Ignant Safe Negro Black Folk can’t go after them because we are family and friends. I have repeated time and time again that I am for justice no matter who it is for or against and that is how I am when it comes to politics and at my place of employment. Now back to Ignant Ass Clint Williams so makes this Ignant Racist Special C more special than me? Because his is a Caucasian and I am a Black Man? Well ain’t this a mess that he and others can talk about me not being a resident of Rocky Mount but all I have ever wanted is for Edgecombe County to be a better place to live work and play. I challenged anyone who will look at my track record and prove me wrong. It is documented in the minutes of the meetings across the county but not limited to and also on video. What tickles me is when I look at Caucasian and Black folk who are Friends with Ignant Ass Clint Williams and/or others who see what he is doing trying to discredit Black Folk and say nothing. I was only going to serve on the Rocky Mount Human Relations Commission until someone else was able to take the seat. I had been trying to get someone to take the seat before I agreed to do it knowing that I was not going to stay on. I am pleased that in this season Cooper Blackwell was able to step up to the plate. I love seeing young folk that is conscientious about what is going on around us sit at the table. I am more than happy to see this young Black male take my seat. You see I ain’t going anywhere, I am going to be in the room although not at the table and that is where I love to be. Folk ask me when I am going to run for an office all the time and I tell them that we need some agitators. Athough I could use the extra income by running for a paid office but this ain’t my season and when my season come then I will claim it. Until my season folk I am going to continue to be Curmilus Butch Dancy II The Political Agitator a Professional. I know what I have done when it comes to Rocky Mount Politics and I don’t need anyone to validate it because my works speak for me everywhere I have gone.

Local resident chides city leaders over audit report By WILLIAM F. WEST Staff Writer
A Nashville area resident who is a Rocky Mount native and active in business and civic life in the city used the speaker’s podium during Monday’s City Council meeting to criticize the municipal leadership as arrogant.

“It literally has been joked about in business and recruitment meetings that this body is corrupt,” said Clint Williams, who manages a group called Rocky Mount Business Builders, which is comprised of more than 30 small businesses that help each other via a referral system.

“I’ve been told to my face, ‘Eh, it happens, it’s wrong, but there’s nothing we can do about it,’” Williams said, calling such a stance “willful intentional apathy.”

Williams was commenting in the context of the May 15 report of a probe of the City of Rocky Mount by State Auditor Beth Wood and her team. (Read More)

Animal shelter worker fired over racially insensitive comments on Facebook

There’s renewed debate over confederate monuments but one discussion is being overshadowed by comments from a local animal shelter worker.

Comments many people say are disturbing.

Chris Carroll was the facility director at Beare Garden Plantation Animal Rescue.

“While he was off duty and talking to high school friends and things were in turmoil because the statue in Rocky Mount was going to be removed. He made very derogatory, racist comments,” says Kathy Heath, the owner of the animal shelter.

George Floyd and Derek Chauvin "bumped heads" while working at nightclub, former

The Political Agitator’s response: This is what I said on June 1,George Floyd’s Death Ruled A Homicide Death By Asphyxia.

As mourners in Houston honor the life of George Floyd in Minneapolis, CBS News is learning new details from a nightclub coworker about alleged history between Floyd and Derek Chauvin, the former officer who is charged in Floyd’s death. According to a former coworker, not only did they know each other, but they had a history of friction.

Floyd and Chauvin both worked security at a nightclub at the same time. Coworker David Pinney said the two men had a history.

“They bumped heads,” Pinney said.

“How?” CBS News asked.

“It has a lot to do with Derek being extremely aggressive within the club with some of the patrons, which was an issue,” Pinney explained.

The Floyd family says they believe what happened on May 25 was in part personal. Their lawyer has called for Chauvin to be charged with first-degree murder, “because we believe he knew who George Floyd was.”

“Is there any doubt in your mind that Derek Chauvin knew George Floyd?” CBS News asked Pinney.

“No. He knew him,” the coworker said. (Read More)

What the city where defunding police worked really tells us about it

The Political Agitator’s response: I have seen folk talk about defunding police but have you done any research before making an informed decision. This is what I do research before commenting.

With the nation’s attention now intensely focused on racial inequality and the systemic history of problematic policing, “defund the police” has become a new rallying cry for advocates pushing for reform.

Already, as Minneapolis and other cities weigh the move, people on both sides of the issue are pointing to examples of success and failure, looking to find data points — or worse yet, fears — to argue why defunding police could either be a good idea, or a terrible one.

And that debate has quickly brought to light the shining example and metamorphosis of policing in Camden, New Jersey, a city that was once among the nation’s most dangerous with a homicide rate equivalent to that of El Salvador before a funding upheaval and list of reforms resulted in the lowest murder rate the town had seen since 1987. Add to the fact that local police have accomplished as much with a noted drop in use of lethal force and the viral image of its Chief of Police marching hand-in-hand with protesters, and it’s easy to see why people are quick to look to replicate it.
