Edgecombe Democrats seek chairman’s ouster By JOHN H. WALKER Staff Writer May 21, 2020

imageA petition to remove Roosevelt Higgs as chairman of the Edgecombe County Democratic Party will be heard by state party officials.

On Wednesday, state Democratic Party Executive Director Meredith Cuomo told the Telegram, “The (state Democratic Party) is taking these calls from our fellow Democrats very seriously. In line with the (state) Democratic Party Plan of Organization, the statewide party officers unanimously determined that the matter will proceed to a hearing. The Council of Review, a diverse group of Democrats representing each North Carolina Congressional District, will hear the matter in the very near future.”

The petition is the second time in as many years that a petition has been filed with the state party seeking Higgs’ removal as party chairman.

In his letter, Dancy wrote, “Higgs was calling around saying the convention was canceled because he was refusing to participate and cooperate.”

Dancy also referenced a conference call that he initiated with state party officials: “I have some concerns that Edgecombe County Chair Rev. Roosevelt Higgs refused to participate and to cooperate with the state Democratic Party Chair Wayne Goodwin and Political Director Lorenzo Pedro on a conference call on Monday, April 6.” (Read more)

City Councilman Andre Knight told a regional television station he did not engage in criminal wrongdoing.

Knight on camera made clear he is not going to resign in the aftermath of a report of an investigation of the City of Rocky Mount by State Auditor Beth Wood and her team, which included him as a focus of the probe.

“I have never stolen,” Knight told WTVD in an interview conducted in the council chamber and aired on Friday afternoon.

“I have never taken. I never asked for preferential treatment. I have always fought and worked hard,” Knight said.

Word of WTVD planning to air video of an interview with Knight began circulating via social media on Thursday evening, this after activist and videographer Curmilus Dancy II posted a message on his blog. (Read more)

Durham Black Clergy Members Say They’re Waiting to Reopen Their Church Doors

About 20 Durham pastors gathered under a breezeway of a church south of downtown on Thursday morning and announced that their churches would remain closed for Sunday worship services to protect their congregations from the novel coronavirus.

The late morning press conference took place at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church on South Roxboro Street. The church’s pastor, Jerome Washington, recalled the black church’s origins when believers would worship in secret embedded deep in the woods, far from the censorship of their white kidnappers who made fortunes from their forced labor.

“Worship has never been confined to a building,” Washington said. “In our tradition, worship first begins in the heart. Historically in the African American tradition, we worshipped when there was no building. … Our worship is not confined to a building. As a matter of fact, we did not need the governor to tell us to close our churches. Our love for our people told us to close our churches.”

The pastors’ announcement came a week after conservative church leaders filed a federal complaint against Governor Cooper, arguing that his executive order prohibiting indoor gatherings of more than 10 people, even for religious services, violated their religious freedom. Two days later, U.S. District Court Judge James C. Dever issued a temporary restraining order allowing congregations to meet in larger numbers for at least 14 days.

Washington said he was “not at all bothered” by Dever’s order or Cooper’s prohibition of mass gatherings for worship services. He added that Christians should be mindful of those who pose as Christians while pushing a political agenda. (Read more)

Mississippi church fighting coronavirus restrictions burned to the ground

“Bet you stay home now you hypokrits” was written in parking lot at church that had sued the city over its public health orders.

May 22, 2020, 1:43 AM EDT

By Phil Helsel

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said he’s “heartbroken and furious” after a fire this week at a church that has challenged coronavirus restrictions. The fire is being investigated as arson.

The fire Wednesday in Holly Springs destroyed the First Pentecostal Church, and investigators found graffiti in the church parking lot that reads, “Bet you stay home now you hypokrits,” NBC affiliate WMC of Memphis reported.

The church was “burned to the ground” and had been trying to open services, Reeves tweeted Thursday.

First Pentecostal filed a lawsuit last month against the city over its public health order on in-person worship services, the station reported. (Read more)

Rocky Mount postpones special meeting, council to discuss state audit Tuesday

Posted Thursday, May 21, 2020 2:12 pm

The Political Agitator’s response: Really Mr. Mayor you are delaying meeting as an expression of unity. B.S.! You didn’t have a quorum to call a meeting. Hell you knew the regular monthly meeting is next Tuesday so why did you try to call a meeting before the meeting? Because you are trying to show that you have the power trying to carry out the mission of the Rocky Mount Special Cs that is a make up of the Rocky Mount Concerned Citizens White Supremacy group. Beth Woods NC State Auditor completed the audit so let the process work itself out. But y’all ain’t interested in letting the process work.

ROCKY MOUNT — In an eleventh-hour decision, Mayor Sandy Roberson postponed a special meeting scheduled for Thursday to discuss a state audit of City Hall finances.

Roberson said an hour before the meeting was set to start that he’s delaying the discussion as an expression of unity.

“I ran for mayor to unify this city,” Roberson said. “We should be focused on the findings in the N.C. State Auditor’s hard-hitting report, not arguing about when we talk about it.”

The meeting will now be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, two hours before the regularly scheduled city council meeting.

When Roberson set the meeting earlier this week, some council members declined to attend while others said they had prior commitments.

“The full council must publicly discuss it and determine together how we are going to regain the trust of our community,” Roberson said. “I expect all of the city council members to attend this new time.”

Roberson has called for Mayor Pro-tem Andre Knight to step down after the audit report revealed last week that he received nearly $50,000 in unpaid utility bill write-offs over a two-decade period.

Roberson also said City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney should reimburse taxpayers for city money she spent on lavish meals.

Limited seating will be available for the Tuesday meeting at City Hall, 331 S. Franklin St. The meeting will also be available on Facebook Live at www.facebook.com/SandyRobersonMayor . (Read more)

Wisconsin Woman Who Took Hydroxychloroquine for Nearly 2 Decades Contracts Coronavirus: ‘How Can I Be Sick?’

Wisconsin woman was reportedly surprised to learn of her COVID-19 diagnosis after taking hydroxychloroquine for nearly two decades, the same drug President Donald Trump recently said he is taking to ward off the virus.

Kim, who asked to be identified by her first name only, has been taking hydroxychloroquine as a lupus treatment for 19 years, according ABC affiliate WISN. The drug has long been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and malaria. It has not been approved to treat or prevent COVID-19.

“When they gave the diagnosis, I felt like it was a death sentence. I was like, ‘I’m going to die,'” Kim told the outlet. “I’m like, ‘How can I be sick? How? I’m on the hydroxychloroquine.’ They were like, ‘Well, nobody ever said that was the cure or that was going to keep you safe’ and it definitely did not.” (Read more)

Andrea Harris Celebration Of Life Please Send Donations To Bennett College

Andrea Harris is with Alana Harris and Omara Harris.

It was an honor to hold my aunt’s hand as she was transitioning. She was so much to so many people, and Omara, my mother, myself, Jamal and Lourdes along with the rest of the family and close friends will be forever grateful and proud of her and the legacy she worked so tirelessly to leave for us all. The family of Andrea Harris would like to thank everyone for their condolences and acts of kindness. In the last few weeks, Andrea was very concerned about COVID-19 and how it affected minorities at a disparaging rate, Bennett College and other HBCUs. She would not want anyone to be exposed to this horrific virus while celebrating her life and legacy. There will be no visitation at this time and a memorial will take place at a later date to be announced by Omara and I. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Bennett College in memory of Andrea Harris.
