The City Council on Thursday voted to temporarily keep the municipality from disconnecting utility services due to nonpayment of bills.

The council did so to help ease the burden on customers anticipating economic hardships as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The council’s action is in place until revoked by the seven-member panel.

Councilman Andre Knight, who doubles as mayor pro tem, first led a work session in the council chamber on Thursday at which the subject of utilities was discussed. Mayor Sandy Roberson subsequently chaired a council meeting, also in the council chamber, at which the vote was taken.
