Rocky Mount NC – Downtown hotel plans stir conflict – Rocky Mount Telegram

Top city officials are on the verge of announcing a new hotel near the Rocky Mount Event Center while sitting on a state grant for a competing downtown project.

“Bringing in something new is not going to make people forget about the Carlton House,” said Tarrick Pittman during a meeting of the Central City Revitalization Panel on Thursday morning.

Pittman was joined by a chorus of downtown business owners expressing their frustration over City Hall stonewalling developers in favor of a pet project.

“It’s either incompetence or deliberate stalling,” said Councilwoman Chris Miller who sits on the panel as a representative of Downtown Renaissance, an organization with the goal of stabilization and preservation of the inner city of Rocky Mount.

State Commerce Secretary Anthony Copeland in October announced $6.9 million in grant funding for 21 rural area projects across the state. One of those projects is a $55,000 grant to support the renovation of the 46,400-square-foot Carlton House, a 64-room boutique hotel on Church Street, which is set to include a restaurant.

Copeland said the Carlton is being renamed the Monk Hotel to pay homage to jazz legend Thelonious Monk, who was born in Rocky Mount.

The project, which includes $4 million in private investment, is expected to create 11 jobs and boost business downtown. (Read more)

Remnant of Jim Crow era remains in NC constitution – WRAL

North Carolina image

RALEIGH, N.C. — In the national debate over race and racism, people sometimes forget how recently racial discrimination was written into the law. In North Carolina, it still is.

A literacy requirement for voting that was added in 1900 remains part of North Carolina’s state constitution almost 120 years later.

Section 4 of Article VI of the constitution states, “Every person presenting himself for registration shall be able to read and write any section of the Constitution in the English language.”

The provision was once used to keep blacks from voting by allowing precinct officials to create outlandish or impossible tests that only prospective black voters had to take.

In 1970, five years after the federal Voting Rights Act struck down literacy tests nationwide, North Carolina lawmakers put a proposed amendment on the ballot to remove the literacy test from the state constitution. But voters defeated the measure, keeping the test in state law. (Read more)

Rocky Mount NC – Official defends his hiring by city – Rocky Mount Telegram

SELMA — Selma Town Manager Elton Daniels is defending his recent hiring as Rocky Mount parks and recreation director by embattled City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney.

Daniels announced in a Jan. 8 Selma Town Council closed session that he was resigning effective Feb. 12 and will assume his new role Feb. 18 in Rocky Mount. Daniels’ salary will be $130,000 per year, compared to $90,000 for his predecessor Kelvin Yarrell, the parks director since 2013. In October, Small-Toney demoted Yarrell to cemetery maintenance supervisor.

In a series of stories, the Telegram questioned Daniels’ relationship with Small-Toney, the increase in salary over his predecessor and his experience in parks and recreation. The newspaper also detailed a 2012 incident when Daniels was cited for driving an unmarked police vehicle with blue lights while working as Sharpsburg town manager. (Read more)

In Response To Dr. Florence A. Armstrong Calling Democrats Stupid

The Edgecombe County Democratic Party meeting on Monday was a set-up by Rev. Roosevelt Higgs and a couple of others. Funny as hell how they talk s about him but then team up with him to carry out mess. I ain’t ignant to what went down and was communicating with folk as the meeting was being set up in the last hour.

I am going to talk about what I witnessed from the time I arrived since the meeting was supposed to have begun at 6 but was already in motion when I arrived around 5:50.

Commissioner Viola Harris questioned the process and damn Dr. Armstrong jumps up and say chair I can speak for myself and began her spill which was a half-truth because I know the story. Not going into further detail but I can.

Towards the end of the meeting after I made the motion to accept the 3 names by acclimation, Dr. Armstrong did another spill. She was addressing Commissioner Harris in both spills because my video doesn’t lie and I know that story as well.

However, Dr. Armstrong was not only addressing Commissioner Harris, she was also addressing others including myself when she said although we voted her in the whole thing was just stupidity. Well Dr. Armstrong I will be the 1st to admit I can be an ignant ass whole depends on who I am dealing with. I didn’t want to vote for you, but I had no choice. Hell, none of you asked me for my vote because I was not there when the meeting began, and no one called me over the weekend.

Dr. Armstrong I found it quite interesting that you would make a statement that you would vote against Democrats just because you were mad that Commissioner Harris, Tarboro Town Councilwoman and myself challenged the damn process. But you ain’t the only that has a problem with Commissioner Harris and me. However, just like I don’t give a damn, I am quite sure Commissioner Harris feel the same.

Dr. Armstrong you talked about folk not supporting you when I used to attend the board of elections meetings, but hell when it got to the point ya’ll were not meeting because of the issue with them ignant Republicans who changed the makeup of the boards of elections across the state.

I work a real job working 8 – 10 hours a day leaving home between 4:30 am and 6:15 am and arriving back at home around 9 pm – 11 pm many days because of attending meetings. I try to attend as many meetings as I possibly can and video them so that folk that can’t attend can see what happens for themselves. I post the meetings on YouTube and I do all that I do out of pocket. Not only do I have to deal with ignant ungrateful black folk, but I have to deal with ignant racist white folk.

I have paid my damn dues even if I chose not to attend another Democratic Party meeting along with other meetings. I refuse to allow anyone to make me look ignant because I do my homework and will challenge any damn body when it comes to politics.

You know me and I know you so enough said.

I am the Professional Political Agitator!
