Council to honor fallen officer – Rocky Mount Telegram

The Rocky Mount City Council is set to recognize a fallen city police officer and approve a new playground, among other topics Monday afternoon.

The council is set to approve a request by Interim Police Chief Willie Williams to award the sidearm of Senior Police Officer Christopher James Driver to his widow.

“It is my recommendation that City Council approve and award the duty sidearm to (his wife) for deceased Senior Officer Chris Driver’s years of service to the city of Rocky Mount and our citizens,” Williams said in a memo to City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney. “Officer Chris Driver died in the line of duty on June 23, 2018, resulting from a (traffic wreck).”

N.C. General Statute 20-187.2 authorizes the awarding of a police officer’s sidearm to the surviving spouse upon approval of the City Council. Driver’s spouse has obtained the appropriate permit from her respective county to receive the weapon. (Read more)
