It’s no secret Rocky Mount has endured some tough economic challenges since the 2008 Great Recession.
Probably one of the city’s lowest points was being named one of America’s 10 most impoverished cities in a Forbes’ magazine article in 2009. While the city still faces some tall obstacles to overcome in terms of unemployment and decreased population, since the ranking, Rocky Mount has made strides to no longer be on the list.
Mayor David Combs said the report was published during the middle of the recession and the city was undergoing an economic shift.
“When they do something like that, it’s kind of a snapshot in time,” Combs said. “We had Hurricane Floyd in 1999 that hurt this area and the recession started in 2007. We did feel the economic impact, no doubt about that – and the citizens were impacted by that.” (Source: Read more)
