Four area attorneys are bucking for a seat on the state district court bench.
Rocky Mount lawyer Lamont Wiggins, Tarboro lawyer Sharon Sprinkle, Wilson Clerk of Court Andrew Whitley and Wilson prosecutor Beth Freshwater Smith have filed to run for the N.C. District Court judge’s seat vacated by Judge William Stewart in the 7th Judicial District.
Stewart is set to retire before his term ends. Gov. Pat McCrory can appoint a replacement to fill the seat until November’s election. His office hasn’t given any indication whether he will.
Because the seat will be open prior to the election, the 7th District Bar, made up of attorneys from Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties, met last month to nominate members. At the meeting, the four lawyers who would later file to run for the seat put their names forward to be considered for appointment. Around 120 bar members voted with each member being able to vote for up to four of the names, but only once for each name. (Source: Read more)
