The past twelve months have held a number of changes and developments for Rocky Mount, many of which were greeted warmly but others fueled controversy. One such project was the progress of the proposed downtown community facility, formerly known as the event center.
The City Council chambers were filled to capacity in February when Sports Facilities Advisory Chief Executive Officer Dev Pathik presented his company’s market analysis and pro forma of the project, which revealed the estimated $32 million facility would start producing revenue in the fourth year and have a total economic impact of $264 million by year 10.
“The goal for the proposed event center is to create a new economy for our region and city, create a destination location for our center city, incent private investment in our center city, to grow the tax base and, as much as possible, minimize the burden on our tax payers,” City Manager Charles Penny.
