When I hear folk talking about, “Do Black Lives Matter?” I get ignant because I found out Black Lives Matter in my early years.
I remember when I first got involved with community/political activism dating back to the late 80’s.
I used to write letters to the editor responding to issues that affected the community. I was asked to attend A Black Workers For Justice Meeting and I did. This is where I had access to computers, however I had access to a computer at Ms. Doris and Marsha Graves’ house.
I became a Democratic Precinct 3rd Vice Chair during the late 80’s and I was very active and vocal. In the early 90’s I also began to serve as 3rd Vice Chair and I also had the opportunity to serve in the capacity of 2nd and 1st Vice Chairs and in the mid 90’s as the Chair of the County party. I served in the 3rd Vice Chair capacities because I was the only one to meet the age criteria being under 39 years old. Some black folk didn’t truly care for me because I was labeled as a militant by them and a racist by some white folk. But I knew back then that BLACK LIVES MATTER!
I served as the Chair because while serving as 3rd Vice, the Chair Roy Gray stepped down to go to work with Congresswoman Eva Clayton. The 2nd Vice Chair Vines Cobb had had surgery and didn’t want to take it on since the 1st Vice Chair Celestine Lyons had to step down because she filed to run against T.C. Cherry who was a Democratic County Commissioner. Rev. Roosevelt Higgs wanted to be the chair but Taro Knight told me I needed to move up from 3rd Vice to Chair. Knight nominated me and I was elected to serve the unexpired term of Roy Gray from 1998 – 99. I had also filed to run for the school board.
I have served and currently serve as precinct chair for the past several years and the only reason is so I can speak at the county meetings holding Democrats accountable for their actions. The local county party in my opinion is dysfunctional and has been since the early 2000’s due to the lack of leadership among the county officers.
I joined the NAACP in 1992 and I have been a Life Fully Paid Member for many years now. I have served as 3rd, 2nd and 1st Vice President over the years. Back then they didn’t want to deal with me because I held them accountable for their actions. I was the youngest active member.
I also served on the executive board and as the Political Chair and Education Chair over the years and I am currently the 3rd President. I joined the NAACP because I knew back then that BLACK LIVES MATTER!
During the early 90’s I started P.I.E.C.E. (People Interested In Enhancing Children’s Education). I was an advocate for children, parents and educators by speaking out on issues that negatively affected the enhancing of children’s education on whatever level. I served on the school PTO, School Improvement Team, School Board Advisory Council and attended training in the early 2000’s through the NC Justice and Community Development Center Education Leadership Institute. I became an advocate for education because I knew back then that BLACK LIVES MATTER!
I continue to advocate today in my own way because I am equipped with knowledge and wisdom from being an active participant in what is going on around me. I promised myself I would be an advocate for the children and the elderly but not limited to.
I am having a problem with folk that I know now a days in Edgecombe and surrounding counties who are all about BLACK LIVES MATTER and all things black because you were not at the school board meetings, community meetings, NAACP meetings and other but you say you are all about BLACK LIVES MATTER! If you were there back then just maybe we would not have the issues we have on the level that we do. I have spent countless hours attending school board meetings by myself effecting change for your children and/or your grandchildren long before I had a child in the system.
But not only did I attend the school board meetings faithfully, I attended the Democratic Party meetings, county commissioners, board of elections and other meetings across the county and even attended meetings in neighboring counties. I videoed the meetings so I know who have been active over the years so some folk need to stop fronting because I know you and you know me.
I have said a many of times that there has been enough monies that have come through Edgecombe County through non-profits that we ought not be experiencing some things but these folk used the money to live off of instead of helping folk in which the monies was suppose to be for. I have and continue to operate spending my own money and folk that got paid to advocate did little to nothing.
I will continue to fight until I can’t fight anymore because I know Black Lives Matter! I feel good about all I have done over the years. I didn’t allow the black folk that labeled me as Militant and the white folk who labeled me as Racist to keep me from speaking out on issues that affected Black Lives. I have always said that when Black Folk move forward everybody win.
I feel good about the things I have done over the years because I have tried to be my brothers and sisters keeper but I also learned a long time ago that I was dealing with some ungrateful Negroes as I fought for them but that didn’t matter. I understood a long time ago that whatever I do I can’t keep them from benefitting from such whether they be in denial or just don’t care.
Well some folk will say what have I done? Well I will say go to the school board, county commissioners and other and read the minutes of the meetings and you will see.
You can read more about me and you will see that I don’t have to be told or reminded that BLACK LIVES MATTER!
