It is a damn shame that some folks will go to such extreme to mislead folks. It is one thing to not like what this Rocky Mount City Council does to try to make Rocky Mount a better place to live, work and play some folks will just throw out a bunch of mess.
And while the cost – estimated at $40 million – is not insignificant, Rocky Mount has been remarkably disciplined when it comes to spending public money. The city’s debt stands at 0.53 percent of its debt capacity. Financing an event center likely would take the city up to 1.57 percent of its debt capacity in the General Fund. There are plenty of other cities and towns in and outside of North Carolina that would love to have a debt load that small. And 1.57 percent is nowhere close to the 8 percent legally allowable.
