Crime, Violence and Drop Outs Decrease for ECPS

Tarboro, N. C. On Wednesday, April 2, 2014, the State Department of Education released a Consolidated Data Report which contains information regarding crime and violence in public schools across the state of North Carolina.  In addition, the Department has issued School Crime and Violence tables to supplement the Report.

The data, which contains information for the previous academic year, reveals that corporal punishment, school crime and violence, and short and long-term suspensions have declined across the state.  However, the number of expulsions has increased statewide.

"If all students are to graduate career- and college-ready, they must be focused on learning and the classroom environment should support this,” said Dr. June Atkinson, State Superintendent. “I want to thank our administrators for ensuring that our schools are as safe as possible and encouraging positive student behavior.”

In North Carolina, the number of school crime and violence incidences decreased by 4.8 percent.  The rate of acts per 1,000 students also decreased by 5.6 percent to 7.20 acts per 1,000 students, as compared to 7.63 acts per 1,000 students in 2011-12.

Specific to Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS), the total number of acts of school crime and violence decreased by 8.6% from 2011-12 to 2012-13. Just as the state experienced a decrease in the rate of violence acts, the rate declined for ECPS by 3.3 percent. During 2012-13, 71.4% of the schools within the ECPS system reported five or less acts of crime and violence as compared to 60% during 2011-12.  This further demonstrates the downward trend for ECPS. “I am pleased to see an improvement in several indicators in the new NC DPI report”, states ECPS Superintendent of Schools John Farrelly. “The credit goes to our Principals and their school staffs who have made a concerted effort to continue to strengthen our disciplinary structures in all of our schools. Our first responsibility is to provide safe learning environments for all students and staff. This is one of our 5 ECPS core values.”

Across the state of North Carolina, there was a 9.4 percent decrease in short-term suspensions and an 11.6 percent decrease in long-term suspensions.  ECPS experienced a 3.5 percent decrease in short-term suspensions.

Another key finding from the Report is that the annual high school dropout rate decreased by 18.6 percent decrease in North Carolina.  ECPS realized a slightly greater decrease than the state, 18.9 percent. “While our dropout rate is not where we want it to be, we made great progress last year,” added Farrelly.

Longtime business leaders have expertise to make city great again – Rocky Mount Telegram

Thank you, Mr. Mayo Boddie Sr., for a lifetime of passion, and hard work that resulted in Rocky Mount being an “All American City” in 1970 and again in 1999.

Mr. Boddie continues to support our city in countless and generous ways, and we appreciate his contributions. I have the highest respect for Mr. Boddie because of his entrepreneurship and legendary successful career. (Source: Read more)

The Political Agitator response:

It never seems to amaze me how these racist white folks continue to talk about the great divide because the city council has been a make up of a 4-3 black majority for the past 8 years.

A few RWF continue to write and attend the meetings and talk race using code words that we as INTELLIGENT black folks can understand. Rocky Mount Mayor Pro-tem Andre Knight continue to call them out.

They said they were going to move out of Rocky Mount if the council became a 4-3 black majority so therefore that means they were not going to support this council no matter what they do. Hell the same thing that happened to the 1st black elected and re-elected President of these United States.

Sad only a few RWF want to make it appear that only Rocky Mount Mayor Pro-tem is the only one talking about RACE.

I respect his April 1 Letter to the Editor, expressing his dissatisfaction with our city leaders, crime and the continuing racial and other issues that divide our city. (City leaders 4-3 black majority)

Our elder generation has the expertise and opportunity to help set the stage for our children to revive Rocky Mount and make it great again, with support from city leaders. (So the 4-3 black majority need to let that generation tell them what to do. In other words let the white man tell the 4-3 black majority what they need to do and then they support them.)

And on the issue of crime, every city has crime, but why is the emphasis always directed to our downtown? (I too agree! Why directed towards downtown because they continue to say ain’t nothing down there.)

It is difficult to read and hear many folks talk about crime downtown, and yet these same people do not live downtown. I believe our city can confront the issues expressed by Mr. Boddie, while campaigning for support of an event center. Concerns over the event center that divide the city need to be a top priority. (So what are the concerns that divide the city over the event center? I continue to read that the divide is because Mayor Pro-tem Andre Knight has spoken out so boldly in favor of it and because he said, he felt Lige Daughtrige was against it because of the 4-3 black city council and because of the location. Funny how since that time Skip Carney has taken the mic. The last time I checked Knight only has one vote so why are these folks so inferior of this man? Hell just because he is President of the local NAACP an unpaid position, he still has one vote.)

So if not an event center, then what? We need something! Let’s make decisions based on giving our children a better Rocky Mount. (I agree! If not then what? I know atleast 3 of the black council members have children and the other 1 is still young so could possibly have a child one day soon. However I am quite sure they have some young family members. My point is, damn why is it that the 4-3 black majority is looking at giving their children, their children’s children and family members/friends a better place to live because they have family, however they represent the citizens of Rocky Mount.)

I Was Told That I Intimidate Folks

I was told that I intimidate folks. I don’t go around trying to intimidate folks. I say what I mean and mean what I say!

I tell folks directly and indirectly what I want them to know by posting an open letter on my blog which automatically goes to my facebook and twitter accounts. If I am friends with those whom I write letters to, then I post it on their facebook page. If they are not my friends, I bet you my paycheck that what I say will get to them. Well when I say something, my intentions are for it to get to them.

I don’t hide behind a code name and I don’t say anything that I am not willing to repeat again and again.

So for those of you who think I am an intimidator, well I am The Political Agitator and “I have no permanent friends no permanent enemies only permanent interest!”

Now Run and Tell That!
