STDs a growing concern in Edgecombe County

TARBORO — Edgecombe County’s communicable disease rates decreased in the last fiscal year, but the county’s HIV/ AIDS rates are still No. 1 in the state.

Human services board members also expressed concerns about reports of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in county 10-14 year olds.

The health department had a 21.85 percent decrease in communicable disease reports from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013, communicable disease supervisor Leslie Arnold reported at Tuesday’s board meeting. (More)

Limbaugh lashes out at GOP: Most ‘irrelevant’ political party in my memory – Raw Story

Conservative media behemoth Rush Limbaugh lashed out at the Republican Party on Wednesday, roundly castigating the GOP for failing to up-end the Affordable Care Act — also known as Obamacare. According to Talking Points Memo, the talk radio titan blasted Republicans as powerless and “irrelevant.”

“I was trying to think earlier today if ever in my life I could remember any major political party being so irrelevant,” Limbaugh said Wednesday. “I have never seen it. I have never seen a major political party simply occupy placeholders, as the Republican party is doing.” (More)

Corey Booker Wins Special Election For New Jersey Senate Seat – International Business News

Newark Mayor Cory Booker will soon be the next New Jersey senator.

The Democratic candidate beat out Republican opponent Steve Lonegan in a special election to fill a Senate seat left vacant by the late Frank Lautenberg. The Associated Press called the election in Booker’s favor on Wednesday night with 52 percent of the vote tallied. Booker led 55 percent to 44 percent.

“Thank you so much, New Jersey. I’m proud to be your senator-elect,” Booker tweeted minutes after his win was announced. (More)

Tea Party Republican Defends Being on Medicaid While Opposing Medicaid – Gawker

A Tea Party candidate for Idaho’s House of Representatives defended himself against allegations of hypocrisy following an NBC News article in which he admitted to signing his entire family up for Medicaid while running on a platform that calls for the dismantling of all government programs.

"I don’t think that the government should be involved in health care or health insurance," Greg Collett, 41, of Caldwell told NBC News earlier this month.

Collett, a self-employed software developer by trade, went on to note that his ten children — two biological, eight adopted — are all recipients of health insurance through the government’s Medicaid program, and acknowledged that "there are a lot of people out there that’ll cry foul" over the dissonance.
