C-Span covered the NAACP National Convention, recently held in Houston, Texas. Their coverage included a segment on the felony voting rights issue and aired the weekend of August 11th 2012.

Benjamin Todd Jealous President and CEO of the National NAACP, Dr. William J. Barber, State President, North Carolina NAACP and Dennis Gaddy,  Executive Director of Community Success Initiative, and Criminal Justice Chair for North Carolina NAACP were a part of the eight member panel and teaching session.

See details and link to C-Span coverage below:

The NAACP met and discussed issues within the African-American community including voting rights, education, and civic participation. As pivotal elections approach in 2012, the summit examined the national attack on voting rights and retrogressive measures meant to prevent participation by eligible citizens. The session provided an overview of the national and state-level attacks on voting rights, and provided a comprehensive strategy on the progressive response. Panelists discussed concrete steps to implement the NAACP game changing strategy to increase civic participation and protect and expand voting rights.

This session is 1 hour and 26 minutes, a great session and a great info kickoff and facilitation by Dr. Barber. Watch it when have a chance or look at any portion of the panel discussion by moving the time line on the video after starting the video.

“If American women would increase their voting turnout by 10 percent . . .

Response: Women just do it!

No ‘easy’ button for council Monday – Daily Southerner

Response: I hate it I can’t attend the Town of Tarboro Council meetings because I attend the Edgecombe County Public Schools Board Meeting on the same evening. However I have got to purchase another video camera and hire someone to help me out by going to meetings like this and or meetings that take place during the day while I am working.

The Town of Tarboro meetings are going to be very interesting because of the Republican Garland Shepheard who once owned the Ford Company in Tarboro before selling out to Doug Henry recently. He ran for a state office unsuccessfully atleast twice. Shepheard’s wife works for US Senator Burr so not only will Shepheard by trying to make a good showing on the local but on the state and national as well. I am still trying to figure out how Shepheard was allowed to run without any Democratic opposition for the Tarboro Town Council. This is where the Democratic Party should have played a role and seen that the Democratic candidate that held the position was not going to run so therefore they should have encouraged someone to step up to the plate.

TARBORO — What looked to be a simple meeting of the Tarboro Town Council turned into anything but on Monday night, as a series of questions from first-term council member Garland Shepheard more than doubled the length of the meeting.

Council members approved all items on the agenda unanimously; with the exception of law enforcement grant budget amendment that passed 7-1. (More)

Tarboro council extends Thornton as town manager – Daily Southerner

Response: Well the new Town Manager keeps his job however not without much discussion. There were several people who were pissed with him because he hired a new Tarboro Police Chief who just happened to be the first Black Chief in the town’s history. But those in opposition to the hiring felt that the new Chief should have been from within the department. So since they couldn’t have their way they said the Town Manager had to go.

TARBORO — There had to be some anxious moments for Tarboro Town Manager Alan Thornton Monday night.

Thornton, who was a unanimous hire as manager a little over a year ago, kept his job following an executive session that lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes. (More)

Princeville NC: LGC gives delinquent users 10 months to pay – Daily Southerner

Response: According to Julia Vail, deputy director of communication for LGC, as of Tuesday there were 104 customers were on the cut-off list. Some of the delinquent customer bills are reportedly as high as $3,792. Vail said the primary issue behind the delinquency is that customers were allowed to continue receiving services in spite of having not paid their bills. Damn the Princeville 3 Mayor Priscilla Everette-Oates, Mayor Pro-tem Isabelle Purvis-Andrews and Commissioner Calvin Sherrod campaigned on the water bills so look at where they are now. This article shows exactly what has gone wrong while the Princeville 3 has tried to blame others for their mess. Finances water bills and 24 credit cards for 12 people and the Mayor has used the card and has no documentation. So to all the folks who talk about Princeville need to voluntarily ask Tarboro to take over them oh hell no. The folks of Princeville who are in good standing need to ask that those who created this mess the Princeville 3 to resign effective immediately and the folks who are behind in their water bills to pay up and this would be an easy fix. Damn the Princeville 3 keep talking about Sam Knight criminal activity but if I remember correctly the things he done do not equate to the $1000’s of dollars that Princeville is in the red at this particular time. Again I say the Princeville 3 has intentionally put Princeville in the red because Commissioner Ann Howell and Gwendolyn Knight along with some others have questioned their every move. Damn I remember so clearly how the Princeville 3 called T. Vance Holloman a liar during the July 30 meeting in Raleigh but we continue to see who are the liars.

TARBORO — PRINCEVILLE — In an effort to get the town’s finances in a more stable condition, the Local Government Commission (LGC) has implemented a plan to collect Princeville’s delinquent water and sewer bills.

LGC’s plan requires delinquent customers to establish a payment plan with the state agency no later than Monday, Sept. 10. If the delinquent customers abide by the plan, their debts will be cleared by June 30, 2013. The payment plan must be approved by LGC, which took over the town’s finances on July 30. (More)
