The DCN Hall Of Fame Leshaun Trekel Jenkins

I have been knowing Leshaun for many years. I have been knowing his mom and dad nearly all of my life. Several years ago I was reading The Tarboro Daily Southerner and I seen an article on Leshaun coaching tennis. I said I know him and he was a graduate of SouthWest Edgecombe my alma mater. And then I read about him coaching basketball and soccer. But I had the opportunity to see him in action coaching basketball. He was not as successful in basketball as the other sports but his professionalism as it relates to the sport and teaching the players skills and discipline was above par. Leshaun has done some good things with the students he has been coaching. I am so proud of Leshaun. I could tell you about Leshaun but my philosophy is I can tell my story better than anyone else so I am going to let Leshaun tell you his story.

What inspired you to do what you do?

Growing up in poverty taught me some tough lessons. Lessons on faith, socio-economics, tenacity, perserverance, etc..When you are poor, you don’t really know how poor you are until that one day that you actually acquire things and you look back and realize just how bad your situation was..but I always knew I would be successful, and I always told myself that I would commit my life to helping kids who grew up like me..single parent household, at risk, and hopeless.  But today, I know where my help comes from, and I am so glad that the spirit of god lives in me and inspires me to reach out to a dying generation of young and old to motivate and inspire them to be that absolute best that they can be, by any means necessary!

Who inspired you to do what you do?

My main source of inspiration came first from my mom.  Rather our lights were on or off, rather there was food or not, rather we were being evicted or not b/c we could not pay the rent, my mom imposed a standard that I WOULD be a great student and I WOULD perform to the best of my ability and the receive the most quality education that I could.

Name a few people that you have met outside of Edgecombe County that have been an inspiration to you?

God has blessed me to travel the world.  Too see hopeless kids in Rwanda (East Africa), that inspired me. To see people living in Tin dwellings in Costa Rica, that inspires me. To go to school everyday and see young people who have been abused, and neglected, and degraded, and verbally broken, that motivates me.  My college tennis coach at East Carolina was a meek man who let his light shine…that inspired me and finally Dr. Spaulding, my college professor who ignited my passion for Africa…she inspired me.

What would you like to say to the people of Edgecombe County especially young folks?

I would like to say greater is he who is in you that he that is in the world. Each one of you have greatness in you.  Why settle for a mediocre life, if GOD has already promised you that you can be great. Not just in sports, but in character, academics, morals, ethics..everything you so desire to do or be, you can be great at it…on top of that after god created you to be great, he then promised you that you can do ALL things through him !  So don’ t go through life waiting for people to validate you and to approve what you are capable of..you are already validated…God has already stamped you with his approval and is waiting for you to step out on faith where he will meet you and your potential!

Do you have contact information that you would love to share with others such as phone number, website, blog, twitter and/or etc.
