When "stand your ground" fails John McNeil killed a white man who assaulted him in his home. But, unlike George Zimmerman, he’s serving life

As the shooting death of Trayvon Martin and the failure of authorities to arrest his killer, George Zimmerman, continues to grab headlines, many conservatives and gun rights advocates insist that race has nothing to do with it. Some have also rallied to the defense of Florida’s "stand your ground" law, the self-defense legislation under which Zimmerman was able to avoid arrest. Yet not all stand your ground claims are so successful. Not too far from Sanford, Fla., a black man named John McNeil is serving a life sentence for shooting Brian Epp, a white man who trespassed and attacked him at his home in Georgia, another stand your ground state. Zimmerman is Arrested today, but the work to Arrest racial profiling and racial injustice in the legal system continues tomorrow – NAACP NC

NC NAACP Letterhead

April 11, 2012

For More Information:     Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President, 919-394-8137

Zimmerman is Arrested today, but the work to Arrest racial profiling and racial injustice in the legal system continues tomorrow

Tonight was an important beginning with the arrest and second degree murder charge against George Zimmerman for the death of Trayvon Martin. It begins what we have wanted in the Civil Rights Community: an arrest and a fair and open trial based on the facts. It begins the process of restoring some faith and hope that justice will be blind and our legal system will be impartial.

But while it is a beginning, it is not an end. It should not be an end to our prayers for Trayvon’s family. It should not be an end to us remembering that an innocent teenager was racially profiled for wearing a hoodie and "carrying skittles while black" with deadly consequences. Trayvon, who could have been any of our sons, is dead. It should not be an end to our following or monitoring this case. While Zimmerman has been arrested, it certainly doesn’t put an end to the racial profiling and racial application of arrests, prosecutions and imprisonment in our communities. Rather, now more than ever, racial profiling must be challenged by an ongoing Movement that demands respect, raises a moral outcry and registers our position politically through the electoral process in ways that continue to challenge systemic injustice.

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

Ignant Column: I just love the ignant damn conversations on FM 99.3 about the Trayvon Benjamin Martin case. The problem I have is who in the hell do Dave Perkins and his other white guest think they are to day what the NAACP can say and do?

I try not to speak for the NAACP but today NC Rep. Buck Newton Republican was on FM 99.3 talking about the NAACP was trying to get in the spotlight to get money and to make the Trayvon Martin case a race issue and he disagreed. He said the NAACP said Trayvon Martin was gunned down like a dog and he disagreed. He said the NAACP and others were not there well damn ignant a . . . you were not there either. This is the NAACP opinion and we can say what the hell we please. Who in the hell do he think he is?

We can have an opinion and we will stand behind our opinion.

I am just damn sick of Ignant Racist White Folks who try to say they are not when I know better. The hell with you and I will not sit back silent without speaking out.

When I allow Ignant Racist White Folks tell me that I can’t talk about what is going on with Trayvon Martin in Sanford Florida and little black children be they local or nationwide then ya’ll better come see about me because I have begun to drink something stronger than Pepsi and on Coke – Cocaine. But you see this is why I will not do either because I know these Ignant Racist White Folks want me to do just that. Oh hell no!

Somebody might say I am mad. You damn right mad as hell! I get so sick and tired of having to call in to the local tv and radio stations to respond to IGNANT RACIST DAMN WHITE FOLKS who I have not and never will allow them to speak for me.

I am a life fully paid member of the NAACP and I stand 100% behind their fight for justice in the Trayvon Martin case.

Ann Kent Edgecombe County Public Schools Board Chair Presentation About “Her” Wanting The Board To Cut Their Own Budget Training And Traveling Sucked

Again the local papers the Daily Southerner seems to be printing one sided information which could cause some confusion and some hate from some whom work in the Edgecombe County Public Schools.

I have heard that some school employees were somewhat excited about Kent asking the board to cut their own budget. So that means that these employees were looking for that to happen at the Monday night meeting so now that it didn’t I am quite sure they are pissed. But you see if these employees would attend the meetings they would know what goes on. You see it is no way that I would work for a system, entity and etc. and I not attend the monthly meetings whereby my bosses are making decisions that affect me.

The local newspaper did not mention anything about the discussion and that is just wrong. The Daily Southerner paper printed the following:

Board chair Ann Kent said she was disappointed the board did not act on her suggestion from last month’s meeting that board members reduce travel expenses by 20 percent and workshop expenses by 25 percent.

“I’m very disappointed that the board did not feel that their budget should be cut when we cut everyone else’s budget,” said Kent.

It is my opinion that this paper is painting a negative picture of the board on the issue of them cutting their own budget without posting the discussion on why the board didn’t act on her suggestion. Well damn if she had presented it correctly they would have acted on it. Also if she had asked the superintendent and the others to do a study on where they could cut their budget just like they did the rest of the budget.

What the school employees and the citizens of Edgecombe County ought to be pissed about is Ann Kent the board chair do not complete her 12 hours of minimum training required by the board. It is obvious she chose the training and travel because she do not participate in the 2 but wants to cut others that participates. It seems to be an attack on former board chair Evelyn Wilson whom have always participated in both over the years and stated at the March meeting that she would go to the training if she had to pay her own way. This was not mentioned in this paper last month nor this month. Dr. Evelyn Johnson also stated her concerns about the cuts last month because she said the board is the leader and need to receive the proper training and to go places so that they can get the real feel for what others are doing across the nation.

Another thing the paper printed that should have been reported more in depth and that is the following:

The budget cuts will result in the elimination of 39 jobs.

I find it interesting that the paper didn’t print that there are jobs that are on freeze because there will be some employees retiring and/or leaving for whatever reasons. This means that the employees that will fall in the 39 may be able to apply for the frozen positions.

I voice my opinions at the meetings and on my blog but I am different from the local newspapers because I video the entire meetings and post the video on The DCN TV so that school employees, citizens and whomever may be concerned can view it from the convenience of their home, office and/or etc. After viewing the video others can challenge my opinion but most of all form their own opinion. I have never had anyone to challenge my opinion after telling me they viewed the video that I provide. I don’t make the news I report it.

I have come to the conclusion that it is by design that the local newspaper continue to report half truth. Well you can count on Dancy Communications Network to provide the whole truth because I am going to provide the video of the entire meeting.

Now I come to one of my favorite quotes: “It is okay to be ignant to the facts but to not do anything about it can be a problem.”
