Trayvon B. Martin

Sanford, FL

Trayvon Benjamin Martin, 17, born on February 5, 1995, was the son of Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin.  He was visiting with his father and his father’s fiancé at her townhome in The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Florida, when, while walking from a convenience store, the unarmed youth was fatally shot and murdered on February 26, 2012.  Trayvon, who was apparently doing nothing more menacing the evening of Feb. 26th than walking home from a convenience store, was shot in the chest during an altercation with a neighborhood watch captain who thought the teen in a hoodie looked "suspicious."

Locally, a Memorial Service for Trayvon will be held at 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Morning Star Church of Christ, 225 S. Glendale Avenue in Rocky Mount, NC.  NAACP President, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber will be the Guest Speaker.

All members of the community, town, city, state, and surrounding states, are invited to attend this Memorial Service.  If you, your family, or your heart has been touched by the tragic death of Trayvon Martin, please join us as we move to bring ALL communities together.  We have a duty to each other to raise the awareness and focus of such violence and the effect it has on us all.  Furthermore, it is our duty to unify and erase the widespread acceptance of crimes as this for all people.

"His name is ringing all over the country, all over the nation, all over the world." Fulton agreed, "It showed us that even President Obama understands we need justice, that he understands our situation." Adds Martin: "The nation is saying… what if, what if this was my son, what would I do?"

Please join us.

Sanford Florida: Self Defense In The Trayvon Martin Case WTH?

Self defense I have not heard or read anything thus far that in my opinion grants self defense. So how does one person having a weapon when the other person does not warrants self defense? How was Zimmerman life threatened? Damn here I go again this is just my opinion. Oh hell! I mean oh well!

Board of Education weighs $2.2M in cuts – Rocky Mount Telegram

Response: As it relates to Roberson School closing, if the school is not serving its purpose and will not have the staff to the next school year then I say close it and send the students somewhere that will be more productive and not just a place away from the real classroom. I wish we would not have to be discussing “An Alternative School” but we know we live in the real world and we know that some students just ain’t going to do right for whatever reasons and must be taken out of the Edgecombe County Public Schools traditional classroom.

It is the board’s job to be good stewards of public money, Kent said, and when the school district is facing layoffs and a school closing, it is only fair that board members scrutinize their own budget as well.

I find it so interesting that both papers are pushing board chair Ann Kent’s personal opinion about the board members scrutinizing their own budget but what I have not seen is what Evelyn Wilson former board chair said at the last month’s meeting that she disagreed and that she would continue going to the training if she had to pay her own way. Dr. Evelyn Johnson said the board runs the system and that they need the proper training and it is a big difference in bringing in folks to do the training versus the board traveling to see what others are doing which is very productive.

So my question to Kent is how many board members receive all of their minimum hours of training last year? What was the budget last year? How many on the board traveled last year to receive their training? So for those who didn’t travel how much money was saved and the money that was saved can it be used somewhere else?

And then my last question, “Is there anyone on this board who has not received their minimum hours of training?” C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

The Edgecombe County Board of Education will vote Monday on the school district’s proposed 2012-13 budget, which would close an alternative school that serves 28 students in sixth through 12th grades. (More)
