Snow slows Edgecombe testing probe–Source: Rocky Mount Telegram

Thursday’s snowy conditions and subsequent school cancellations slowed down an Edgecombe County Public Schools investigation into improper testing procedures at SouthWest Edgecombe High School.

The weather created “a lot of disruption and interfered” with the interviewing process, and no conclusion has been reached, said Diane LeFiles, Edgecombe County Public Schools director of community relations. (Read more)

Women’s shelter struggles to remain open–Source: Rocky Mount Telegram

It has been more than a week since Debra West arrived on the doorsteps of her new haven, The Lighthouse Home.

Before coming to the local nonprofit rehabilitation home, West, 50, was incarcerated for four months at Fountain Correctional Center for Women. She had no job, few clothes and $8 on hand, so The Lighthouse Home founder and manager Vanessa Scaife Rorie said she knew West needed help. (Read more)

Penny named Rocky Mount city manager

In a closed meeting Thursday night, the Rocky Mount City Council unanimously selected Assistant City Manager Charles Penny as the replacement for City Manager Steve Raper, who will retire at the end of December. (Read more)
