From The Publisher – Time To Write My Book

Well Patricia Ferguson of Colerain NC and others who have told me I need to write a book, now is the time. After reading the book God’s Soldier by the late Rev. Dr. Butler McKinnon I have decided it is time for me to move forward and tell my story.

I have so much to tell about growing up in Edgecombe County, becoming a community activist and witnessing the flood of the century. As I tell my story I am going to challenge my wife to write a book about growing up in New Bern NC also.

  1. It is about “dam” time (like you like to say sometimes). You are smart, compassionate, savvy, and you have something to say that needs to be heard. Truth and vision are often missing in a society that is more focused on individual survival and trying to get ahead – The need for a fresh voice at the “microphone” is long overdue. We have rehashed the rehashed and often seem to be “re-telling” what nothings we’ve ALREADY said while the majority of the supposed leadership of our community continues to do the same self defeating things despite our innate brillience. For example: The decision that claims “neighborhood schools” are better than having children bused to other areas is a good idea that is severely problematic for many given that, in some areas, nearly 60% of African American children in NC are not even graduating from highschool. Where is the outcry, marching in the streets, and search for a workable solution? What is the benefit of “dooming” ever more students to underperforming schools that don’t and have never had adequate funding and cronically lacks educational innovation for what is needed now. What ever happened to trade schols that teach something more than just typing or how to mop a good floow? The educational system is perpetually short of funding and new schools overwhelming go to new areas of growth and prosperity – what remains of the school funding, at the “bottom of the barrel,” will be what is left for the kids and families of poorer neighborhoods. Equal and Adequate Funding should be the push of all poor and minority communities. For these reasons and so many others, I love this idea of yours. Curmilus, your voice has been a beacon of hope and a rare voice of substance that not only gives true voice to issues, but you give ACTION to your words where as the best that most others can do is look for photo opportunities to see them selves in print – they are pretenders of legacy and you are the real deal.
