Wilson NC – Mitchell wins ‘Throwdown’

I miss Mitchell’s Barbecue in Wilson NC. It was a great place for food and fellowship where meetings, receptions and etc. were held. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

The following is from Lisa Batts’ blog, which you can also view at www.wilsontimes.com/blogs

I hope you watched Bobby Flay’s "Throwdown" Wednesday night, featuring Wilson’s Ed Mitchell.

Mitchell, who previously operated a barbecue restaurant on U.S. 301, is now pitmaster at The Pit in Raleigh. Food Network personality Flay showed up at The Pit in March and challenged Mitchell to a ribs and beans throwdown. (The Wilson Times)

Wilson NC – Last suspect in Willis case sentenced

It is about time to bring some closure to this case. I felt this is what would happen because it is evident that Deans and Johnson was not at the scene of the crime when Meeks killed Willis. It is sad they turned Meeks in but because it was 2 days later, they are being punished. I wonder would Meeks be in jail now if it was not for Deans and Johnson? C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

The family and friends of murder victim Brittany Willis can finally close one chapter of their five-year nightmare.

Monday marked the last court appearance and sentencing for the three men who were arrested and charged in connection with her death.

Seventeen-year-old Willis, a Hunt High School graduate, was brutally kidnapped, raped and murdered on June 28, 2004.

Tarboro NC – Higgs losing support within the Democratic Party due to ignance

Rev. Roosevelt Higgs at the Democratic Party 1st Congressional District Convention

It appears that the majority of the Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee are getting sick of Rev. Roosevelt Higgs mess. Just maybe after one more meeting he will have no supporters and the party can move forward.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Edgecombe County Democratic Party Executive Committee meeting on May 26, 2009 because my daughter had Senior’s Award Assembly at SouthWest Edgecombe High School. However I am sort of glad I was not able to attend because I get so sick of ignance and I know I would have voiced my opinion.

I received a call while I was at the award’s assembly from a person whom attended the meeting because they wanted to get active in the party so they thought. The person said the meeting was just crazy.

This person told me the meeting lasted about 2 hours. This meeting should have been over in about an hour.

This person told me that my chairman Allen Mitchell said he was nervous and that he was learning as he go. This was a turnoff to this person. Obviously he was intimidated by Higgs and this is so sad.

I understand the meeting was prolonged due to Higgs mess. It is a damn shame that some folks allow Higgs to intimidate them.

I didn’t have a problem with Higgs when I was the interim county chair 1998-99 because I was not intimidated by him.

The past several Edgecombe County Democratic Party Chairs have been women so I am going to see how Mitchell stand up to Higgs. Not only did I feel sorry for these women, but I did all I possibly could to help them but they still were intimidated by Higgs until the end of their tenure.

Several precinct chairs have asked me recently  what is Higgs trying to do and why don’t he stop questioning everything others do. I said the sad part is they don’t see the mess he does before he get to the meeting such as calling and threatening folks letters to folks like Rocky Mount City Councilman Andre Knight.

It is a damn shame when Democrats allow a known criminal like Higgs to continue to disrupt the party meetings. But It appears that Higgs faithful supporters other than one or two others such as Deacon Bernard Bullock decided not to vote with Higgs motion. I understand that the vote to send the slate of names for the Edgecombe County Board of Elections Appointees in such order to the NC State Democratic Party presented by the Chair Allen Mitchell was supported 170 – 17. (The numbers may not be exact however the margin was overwhelming. I will post the actual vote when I receive a response from the secretary.)

Will the new Edgecombe County Democratic Party Chair Allen Mitchell work towards learning the party Plan of Organization and inviting folks to help him out be they within the local party, 1st Congressional District Chair and/or the State Democratic Party? Mitchell must be in control of his meetings or will he be just like the past chairs. Remember they were women. Well we shall see.

Raleigh NC – Easley Scandal Hits Progress Energy

This information was pulled from the Citizens For Fair Utilities Website.

From the Associated Press Monday June 1 2009
Questions of influence peddling abound.

Companies that worked closely with the Easley administration — including Progress Energy Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield and AT&T Corp. — gave at least $150,000 to Easley’s speakers series while her husband was in office. Some reported donating money to sponsor a speech by former President Bill Clinton in February, two weeks after Mike Easley left office, and said the former first lady’s role was not a factor.

Did the money buy access and/or favors? You be the judge.  Progress Energy and Electricities are joint owners of Nuclear Power Plants and those plants sell wholesale power to the 32 municipalities covered under NCEMPA.

From the Publisher – Time to go back to my real job

This past week I took a vacation from my real job Tuesday thru Friday. Monday was the holiday.

On Tuesday I cleaned up my yard from when the tornado touched down earlier this month. I had 2 trailer loads of tree debris. Thanks to my neighbor who came over and sawed up a couple of trees and helped me load up the debris, of course I paid him. Afterwards I planted soy beans.

I planted soy beans and plowed land on Wednesday for a couple of hours.

On Thursday, I had some other business.

On Friday I went with my son’s school G.W. Carver to Kings Dominion. The school’s chorus had to sing. They won a trophy for a superior performance award.

Yesterday, Saturday my son had a basketball game.

Sunday my daughter’s senior class had a baccalaureate service at 7:00 PM. James L. Knight Jr. a former graduate of SouthWest Edgecombe was the speaker.
