Connecticut – Lecturer Focuses on Possible Legalization of Drugs and Consequences

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on April 26, 2009

The president of Efficacy, a non profit organization focused on drug law reform, Clifford Thornton, spoke at the Connecticut Room last Thursday to examine what he believed was the real cost of the war on drugs and possible solutions.

Thornton, a retired management executive of the Southern New England Telephone company, has focused exclusively on drug policy issues since 1997.

As Senate Bill 349 is being debated state-wide, many people have taken a stance of support or opposition to the controversial Marijuana decriminalization act. (The Recorder Online)

UK- CURB AIDS AND HIV BY DECRIMINALISING DRUGS, SAY EXPERTS

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on April 26, 2009

The use of illicit drugs must be decriminalised if efforts to halt the spread of Aids are to succeed, one of the world’s leading independent authorities on the disease has warned.

In an unprecedented attack on global drugs policy, Michele Kazatchkine, head of the influential Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, has told the Observer that, without a radical overhaul of laws that lead to hundreds of thousands of drug users being imprisoned or denied access to safe treatment, the millions of pounds spent on fighting HIV and Aids will be wasted.
