Dr. Boyce: Herman Cain, the Brainwashed Caricature of a Candidate – Source: Your Black World

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on October 2, 2011

I watched presidential candidate Herman Cain on The Tonight Show the other day.  He’d gotten my attention after Anderson Cooper called to ask what I thought about Cain’s recent comment about African Americans being brainwashed into voting Democratic.  I thought that Cain’s remarks were curious for a number of reasons, mainly because they insulted the intelligence of millions of black Democrats. Dr. Boyce, Rev. Sharpton Speak at Ohio Education Rally

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse UniversityScholarship in Action

Most of you by now know about the case of Kelley Williams-Bolar.You also know that I’ve taken a personal interest in Kelley’s case since we first hit the issue on Black Voices. Kelley, in case you don’t know, was convicted of a felony after sending her children to a school district that was not her own. This case against a single mother seeking a better educational situation for her kids set off a firestorm of international support.

I arrived in Akron yesterday to prepare for the rally on Kelley’s behalf, and Rev. Sharpton got here tonight. When we arrived at the church, the parking lot was full, the news trucks were everywhere and police were on hand to control us "rabble-rousing black folks."

The National Action Network was necessary in creating the infrastructure for the rally, for which I was extremely appreciative. The community was particularly gracious in coming out to take a stand for educational equality, which I found to be equally impressive. A glaring absence from the room was Ms. Williams-Bolar, but the issue is bigger than just one person, so I personally wasn’t concerned. I honestly can’t say why Kelley wasn’t at the rally or why her attorneys advised her not to show up, but I hope it was for a good reason. I also hope that they will one day allow her to thank the citizens who came out in bad weather to support her case.

Mother jailed for sending kids to wrong school district

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on January 25, 2011

Brought to you by The Great Black Speakers Bureau, the #1 Black Speakers Bureau in the world.  To join the Your Black World Coalition, please visit YourBlackWorld.com.

We are working to help Ms. Williams-Bolar (below, the story outraged me).  We are asking that you send an email to the mayor of Akron, Ohio.  You can get his contact information by clicking here.  We’ll keep you updated on this story, and I hope you’ll choose to take the time to support this mother in her ordeal.  An email or phone call will make a difference.

Be well,

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse UniversityScholarship in Action

An Ohio mother of two was sentenced to 10 days in jail and placed on three years probation after sending her kids to a school district in which they did not live.  Kelly Williams-Bolar was sentenced by Judge Patricia Cosgrove on Tuesday and will begin serving her sentence immediately.

The jury deliberated for seven hours and the courtroom was packed as the sentence was handed down.  She was convicted on two counts of tampering with court records after registering her two girls as living with their father when they actually lived with her.  The family lived in the housing projects in Akron, Ohio, and the father’s address was in nearby Copley Township.

Additionally, Williams-Bolar’s father, Edward L. Williams, was charged with a fourth-degree felony of grand theft, in which he and his daughter are charged with defrauding the school system for two years of educational services for their girls.  The court determined that sending their children to the wrong school was worth $30,500 in tuition.

Condoleeza Rice Asked on CNN: “Why Are You Not Married?”

Piers Morgan Interviews Condoleezza Rice

by Alexis Stodghill, AOL Black Voices

Condoleezza Rice, the first black woman to become a U.S. Secretary of State, was interviewed recently on the newly minted CNN show, ‘Piers Morgan Tonight,’ to be asked of all things: Why are you not married? That question no successful African American female can escape. The single, black (semi-successful) woman that I am couldn’t help but shrink in insecurity as this ubiquitous puzzler was posed even to one of the most prominent black women alive. Why the embarrassment?
Yes, such questions make for great ratings. It’s a question Piers Morgan might have asked any single V.I.P. Watching a woman who used to wield massive diplomatic and military power talk of cooking fried chicken was a hoot. But despite the innocence of the utterance, for black women everywhere that question is the articulation of a
Greek tragedy-style family curse
: An unsolvable source of suffering for black women that just keeps getting passed down. Piers may not have known that, but refering to it even obliquely is enough to make one’s heart hurt.

Poll Says Americans Losing Faith in Obama – Source: Your Black World

Poll Says Americans Losing Faith in Obama

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, The Institute for Black Public Policy

Recent polls are showing that 6 out of 10 Americans are losing faith in President Obama’s ability to run our nation.  This decline in the president’s numbers is in stark contrast to where the numbers were at the start of his presidency.  They are also reflective of the general fact that Americans are losing faith in government.  While 60% of Americans polled say they have little belief in President Obama, 68% said the same thing about Democrats, and 72% said the same about Republicans.

I don’t agree with these assessments, since President Obama has proven time and time again that he is the most qualified candidate for the job.  The broader challenge for the American people is that there are almost never enough good candidates available.  The elitism that leads our officials to only consider Harvard and Yale graduates for the White House or Supreme Court nominations is disturbing, and such a limited set of selections is what causes us to choose incompetent individuals like George W. Bush or Clarence Thomas to run our country.

One Year After Henry Louis Gates:  Still No True Teachable Moment

Gates 'teachable moment' one year later: What have we learned?
by Dr. Boyce Watkins, The Institute for Black Public Policy

Last year, our nation was brought to a standstill over an otherwise uneventful confrontation between a police officer and a professor. That professor’s name was Henry Louis Gates Jr. To our surprise, we then watched this non-event become the national spectacle, as the police officer soon learned not to mess with an angry professor with a good publicist. By the time the debacle was over, however, the professor quietly and mysteriously walked off into the sunset so he could try to redeem his public image on PBS specials.

One part of the political fallout was the additional damage caused to race relations in America, and a president who had to watch his poll numbers plummet as a result of his misguided intervention. To console the American people, we were promised a series of "teachable moments," designed to help our nation gain a greater degree of interracial understanding. Just like many college students across America, we were holding out for a powerful teachable moment, and instead we just got beer.

One year later, perhaps we can talk about the things that we were supposed to learn from the Henry Louis Gates case, but never did. I’ll take it from the top:

1) Every officer who arrests a black man, even a famous one inside his house, is not always doing something wrong. We must first investigate the facts.

When Gates was arrested, I was surprised to see how many people believed his story without spending a second analyzing the facts of the situation. I didn’t presume that Gates was innocent just because he works at Harvard University, nor did I presume he was guilty. Harvard faculty and students have been arrested on numerous occasions, but I am sure there are also cases when police overstep their authority.

Turpin Suicide and Other Kentucky Players Are Examples of How the NCAA Destroys the Lives of Young Black Men

I’ve said it once and I’ll keep on saying it: The NCAA is an incredibly destructive force within the African American community. The league, which professes to offer opportunities to “educate” players, often turns into a pathway to broken dreams, empty bank accounts, prison sentences and even suicide. The stories involving former University of Kentucky stars Melvin Turpin and Antoine Walker are very good cases in point. Turner recently committed suicide and Walker is on his way to prison for gambling debts.

The goal here is not to focus specifically on the cases of Walker and Turner, but to instead talk about why the NCAA has so much power over athletes and how athletes might find a way to change that. Significant limitations on athlete labor rightshave been allowed by Congress, and they tend to be most strict on athletes in revenue generating sports. Nearly every activity and revenue stream of the athlete is carefully controlled, with the sole objective of keeping money in the pockets of old white guys. The racial element to this clearly unjust and unAmerican way of doing business cannot be denied. One has to wonder if the fact that most of the top college athletes are black plays a role in why the public perceives the NCAA to be helping the athletes, the same way a major corporation is considered to be a savior for five-year olds in a Chinese sweatshop.

Why Financial Reform Should Matter to Black People

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

Politicians can be trusted about as much as your drug-addicted cousin: You know he loves you, but he is going to lie to you.  Why?  Because addictions speak louder than love. Politicians are addicted to money and corporations have lots of it.  Banks and Wall Street firms pour hundreds of millions of dollars into the pockets of our elected officials, creating an ever-growing divide between what they believe and what they do. That’s why most Americans don’t know if financial reform is designed to work for the people or for the banks.
Most of us are aware that the folks on Capitol Hill are embarking on yet another convoluted political battle involving our nation’s banking system. One side is going to tell you that their ideas are the best, and the other side is going to tell you that the first group is lying to you. But as a Finance Professor, I’d like to spend a second breaking down financial reform in a digestible way. The pending adjustments to our financial system represent the
most significant economic-political transformation since the Great Depression. So whether we like it or not, these activities are going to impact our lives.
A couple of ways in which financial reform trickles down to the rest of our lives are credit card fees and lending rates. Some are arguing that credit card companies should be restricted in the amount they are allowed to charge for an overdraft or late payment.  Some have also questioned floating rate loans or lending products with balloon payments that need to be refinanced. Believe me:  If financial reform goes through, you are going to feel the effects almost immediately.

The Age of the Hoochie Mama is Over:  It’s Time for Hip Hop to Grow Up

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

In 2004, the women at Spelman College told the rapper Nelly to take a hike for sliding a credit card through a woman’s backside. The women told Nelly to take his music elsewhere, and his concert was cancelled. I thought that after this incident, women across America would slide their own credit card in the other direction, away from the record stores and websites used to purchase music from artists who make it their mission in life to disrespect black women. I have to admit that I was wrong.

What has always amazed me is the fact that we have trained young people to endure and embrace consistent disrespect from rappers likeSlim Thug, who recently stated that white women are a far better choice for relationships, and Lil Wayne, who has done everything in his power to show just how little regard he has for African American females. Wayne even has a song called Alphabet B*tches, which isn’t exactly like the ABCs you learned in preschool. For some reason, we all keep dancing to the beat and showing up for concerts, reminding the artist that freedom of speech is in full effect, no matter how harmful that speech may be.

World Cup may be Mandela’s last great goal for South Africa

World Cup may be Mandela's last great goal for South Africa
by Dr. Boyce Watkins

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison. While incarcerated, he played soccer with his fellow inmates in order to avoid going insane under the brutal conditions. He was eventually released in 1990. Two days after his release, 85,000 people gathered to greet their new leader in a soccer stadium. That stadium is the same location where the World Cup is set to begin this week.

To say that this event has significance to Mandela would be a tremendous understatement.

The frail 91-year old Mandela has publicly stated that he plans to attend the World Cup, but he doesn’t plan to stay. He is making the dramatic exception of going out during the winter and jeopardizing his health because the world will be watching the country he loves.

At the end of apartheid, South Africa was banned from international sporting events. The nation has endured a roller coaster of successes and failures during that time, and earning the right to host the World Cup is one of the great achievements of both Mandela and his extraordinary country.

The FIFA World Cup is the most highly viewed event on earth, attracting over 715 million viewers for the final and a total of $2.2 billion viewers for the entire tournament. In comparison, the most highly viewed Super Bowl in history had 106.5 million viewers. The United States is one of the few countries around the world that doesn’t get extremely excited about the World Cup. In other nations, the excitement level is incalculable.
