Petition targets Wilson electric bills – Wilson Times

Jackie Mullis has started circulating a petition and is asking voters for their signature in opposition to the city of Wilson’s ties with ElectriCities.

Mullis has been at the Wilson County Board of Elections Tuesday and Wednesday asking people to sign the petition after they’ve finished voting. She’s also walked through her neighborhood asking for support. So far, she has about 70 signatures. (More)

Electric rate committee recommends restricting revenue – Wilson Times

Response: “It’s been a waste of time to continue to study and study and study and do nothing,” Dew said. “The legislature created this monster years ago and the legislature should slay this monster.”

RALEIGH — State lawmakers believe their best shot at reducing electric rates in the future is through legislation.

The Municipal Power Agency Relief subcommittee, co-chaired by Sen. Buck Newton, R-Wilson, and Rep. Jeff Collins, R-Nash, finalized its study report Thursday that recommends legislation that restricts the use of electric fund revenues and requires revenues be used for debt payments. (More)

Electric rate group to vote today – Wilson Times

A subcommittee tasked with finding a way to reduce electric rates in eastern North Carolina will conclude its study today and vote on its findings.

The subcommittee report could include a recommendation to seek legislation that would restrict the use of electric fund revenues by the municipalities that sell electricity supplied through the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency. The city of Wilson is one of 32 NCEMPA member cities. (More)

Myron K. Smith was excited Monday as he waited to be the first in line to file for the office of mayor at the Wilson County Board of Elections.

As he filled out paperwork, two other candidates — including incumbent Mayor Bruce Rose and challenger William Darden — waited their turn to file for the city’s top post. (More)

DOJ approve’s Wilson’s redistricting maps – Wilson Times

The U.S. Department of Justice has approved new voting districts for the city of Wilson and the pre-clearance opens the door for a May election race.

The Department of Justice approved the city’s redistricting maps on Dec. 22 and the Wilson County Board of Elections was notified by the city attorney this week. The city has seven electoral voting districts and the May 8 election race will include Districts 1, 2 and 4 as well as the mayor’s post. (More)

City manager to represent Wilson on ElectriCities board – Source: Wilson Times

The city of Wilson will continue to have a presence on the ElectriCities Board of Directors for the next three years.

The N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency board voted to appoint Grant Goings, Wilson city manager, to the board. Goings will fill the seat of Mayor Bruce Rose whose second, three-year term ends in December. The NCEMPA board, which met at the Wilson Operations Center Wednesday, cast 93 votes for Goings and 38 votes for Andre Knight, Rocky Mount councilman. Goings and Knight were nominated for the seat on the ElectriCities Board of Directors, a 14-member board that oversees ElectriCities and the two public power agencies it manages, NCEMPA and the N.C. Municipal Power Agency 1. (Read more)

NCEMPA budget passes; Evans votes in opposition

The N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency board approved its 2012 budget but not without some opposition.

Wilson City Councilman Donald Evans voted against the $719.6 million budget because it includes funding for merit pay increases, based on individual performance, and funding to retain or recognize employees. The budget includes a 3 percent merit pool and $45,000 for retention and recognition. (Read more)

Wilson NC – Break-ins prompt meeting with police – Source: Wilson Times

Residents in the Lipscomb Road area neighborhoods voiced their concerns this week to Police Chief Thomas Hopkins concerning the recent break-ins in the area.

More than 50 residents gathered at the South District Police Substation to discuss their fears and concerns about recent events in their neighborhoods. (Paid Content)

Response: I attended the meeting and I am the only one that has the entire meeting on video. The room was packed and people were standing in the hallway. I believe it was more than 75 plus at the meeting. It was a very good meeting. The Chief did a very good job in my opinion.

State leaders are hopeful they can find a solution that can lead to lower electric rates for customers serviced by public power agencies in Eastern North Carolina, including New Bern.

Rep. Jeff Collins, R-Nash, co-chairman of the Municipal Power Agency Relief Committee, said the group’s first meeting recently was a first step in trying to understand the structure and debt by the agencies. (Read more)

WCC to host Hispanic Heritage celebration – Source: The Wilson Times

Wilson Community College will hold its annual Hispanic Heritage celebration on Sept. 15.
