Wake County Public Schools System Update

Hi! Here is the weekend BOE news.

Hilburn survey now available

WCPSS has created an online survey to solicit parents’ thoughts about the K-8 proposal for Hilburn Elementary School. It will be available for two weeks; however, the BOE will be voting on whether to proceed with the converting the school to a K-8 model during its meeting this Tuesday, according to the WakeEd blog. Greetings! Here is the weekend BOE news.

Exam rules under review

"Wake County high school seniors may no longer have to drag themselves to school when they have the flu or some other ailment in order to retain their exemptions from some final exams," according to the N&O.

NAACP contesting school lunch data

The NC NAACP says the USDA has misinterpreted the law regarding use of free and reduced price lunch data with regard to student assignment, according to the N&O and WRAL.

Goldman’s daughter gets midyear transfer

BOE Vice Chair Debra Goldman requested and received a midyear transfer for her daughter to an out-of-zone school, complete with door-to-door bus transportation, according to the N&O and the WakeEd blog. Goldman is getting a lot of criticism for this move; however, at least the decision only affected her child. When Deborah Prickett wanted her son to attend a different high school, she had entire nodes moved.

Todays BOE News

Greetings! Here is today’s BOE news.

Charter school debate today

The North Carolina Senate will discuss lifting the cap on charter schools during a scheduled floor debate today at 3PM, according to WRAL. Republicans have promised to eliminate the restriction capping the number of charters at 100. The proposed legislation would also create a new commission to approve or reject charter license applications. You can watch the debate live on WRAL, beginning at 3PM.

One-sided debate on Smart Start

According to the N&O, "About a dozen state House representatives from both parties heard a brief presentation on Smart Start on Tuesday – all of it from the conservative Civitas Institute."
