Tarboro NC Town Council Have Three New Members, Made History With Two Women

Roy Gray received (136) votes and lost his seat to Taro Knight (140) his former campaign manager. I said that I felt they were both equal and which ever candidate took the most voters to the polls that would vote for them would win.

Buck Price received (64) votes and lost his seat to Gerrelene M. Walker (117). John Wooten (46) a black male ran in this majority white ward.

John L. Jenkins II received (110) votes and lost his seat to Candis B. Owens (138). If Jenkins had received Ervin (Dickie) Guill (10) and Raymond (Ray) Parrisher (12) votes he still would not have defeated Owens.

Walker and Owens both made history because this is the first time a woman has been elected to the council.

My opinion: It is going to be interesting to see how this council move forward. It is going to be interesting to see how the only two blacks on the council Melvin Muhammad and Taro Knight will operate.

Having read the recent commentary by Mr. Bobby Freuler (Oct. 23), I am compelled to totally agree with him.

As clearly stated by Mr. Freuler, race is not a factor in the proposed fee increases for Eastlawn Cemetery grave plots. (Read More @ The Tarboro Daily Southerner)

Candidates Forum For Tarboro City Council and Princeville Commissioners Today Tuesday, October 27, 2009

A DCN resource reported that there will be a candidates forum today at the Edgecombe County Administration Bldg. Auditorium in Tarboro NC at 6:00 PM.

I heard Yolanda Thigpen Edgecombe County NAACP and host of Your Morning With Yolanda say something about a candidates forum on her talk show for the past 2 Saturdays but I did not catch the date, time and location. I believe she said it was going to be sponsored by The Tarboro Human Relations Commission and the Edgecombe County NAACP.

This forum should be quite interesting and a continuation from the 2 previous forums I recently attended held by The East Tarboro Community Group.

This is going to be an interesting race. I feel whoever takes the most folks to the polls on election day will be the winner.

I was not impressed with either however I will continue to follow them.

Recreation seems to be a hot topic and technology being set up in the recreation center (Ray Center) for the public.
