Note: The vote is quite interesting but then again we have an interesting board as well. It will be interesting to see who the other finalist were. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

Tough jobs often have this in common: They come with a steady supply of criticism and are light on the praise.
Leading a school district fits that definition to the letter. And tough jobs can be tough to fill. (Read more @ The Rocky Mount Telegram)
Note: Telegram I hope you are right and I hope the board made the right decision. Now that he has been hired all we can do is wait to see what he does. I have nothing to say about him because I know nothing about him. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

After conducting a second round of interviews for three superintendent finalists at a special meeting Wednesday, the Edgecombe County Board of Education has scheduled another meeting at 8:30 p.m. today at Central Services in Tarboro.
The meeting will feature both closed and open sessions, and the public is invited to attend the open session, board attorney Jonathan Blumberg said. (Read more @ The Rocky Mount Telegram)
Note: Well I know where I will be tonight.
Now this is going to be very interesting. None are from Edgecombe County. So the person who those within the system campaigned for must did not make the cut. Oh well. I think that is best because I do not believe she would have received the respect from those who are set in their ways which is many across the county. There are too many small issues that need to be dealt with and someone from the inside would not be able to do what is best for the children by making some strong decisions in my opinion. C. The Edgecombe County Board of Education is in the “short rows” in the process of finding a new superintendent for the school district.
District 4 seat holder, William Keith Pittman, used the farming cliche to illustrate the progress the board has made since a special, closed-session meeting last Wednesday. (Read more @ The Rocky Mount Telegram)

There was an incident several years ago as it relates to a Val and Sal and in which Dr. Lana VanderLinden was the center of controversy. Shortly thereafter she moved from Tarboro High as a principal into a role at the Central Office. Several folks have been trying to justify the call she made in which the white child was given the top grade but it was overturned. There are some folks who would like to see Dr. VanderLinden be given the superintendent’s job.
And now this is where the principals are trying to go with this, “No valedictorian or salutatorian? Panel will reconsider.” It never seems to amaze me how some folks come up with some things especially during certain times. Funny how the principals are seeking this change at this time. But look around the county at the make up of the principals especially at the high school level.

The meeting was actually suppose to be held last week but it was moved to this week. I will not be able to attend because I volunteer to video SouthWest Edgecombe High School Athletic Banquet every year. This year one of my classmates Alphelia Jenkins and her sister Bridget Jenkins will be inducted into the Schools Hall of Fame.
I read the article in The Rocky Mount Telegram, “School board reviews superintendent surveys” and found it to be quite interesting.
One of the staff respondents said, “Discipline! Discipline! (The new superintendent should) support administrators who are trying to keep an orderly environment, and who are not so worried about a statistic, such as a suspension rate.”
Now that is funny as hell because sources tell me that white children are not sent to (ISS) In School Suspension and when they do they are sent their days are reduced from the time they are suppose to receive. Just maybe the new superintendent will find a way to get to the bottom of how “Discipline” is not done fairly across the school district.
Another staff member asked the Board of Education to “please select a new superintendent who cares about education in Edgecombe County … not someone here to pad their resume.”
It is funny how these folks didn’t say a damn thing when the superintendent left when he was replaced by the 1st black superintendent of Edgecombe County Public Schools was hired. Yes he moved on but so did the one before him who said he was going to be here for 12 – 14 years.

I was so tickled as I walked in the Edgecombe County Public Schools building on Monday because it was so obvious that Diane LeFiles Edgecombe County Public Schools Communications Spokesperson was waiting on me to come in. She and a Tarboro Police Officer were sitting in the hallway. As I walked in it was obvious they were talking about me because they could see me on the outside through the glass door before I walked in. I had put my video camera on my tripod standing behind my car and they could see me from inside the building. Yeap my weapon my video camera. One of 3 photo camera and pocket recorder are the other 2. LMBAO
As soon as I walked in the building Diane and the officer came towards me and she said, Curmilus we would like for you to set up in the back of the room because we don’t want you blocking the door way. I said let me make myself clear, I have never blocked the doorway. I repeated myself, I just want to make myself clear that I have never blocked the doorway. Where I have been setting up over the years have never been in the doorway even if I videoed out in the hallway.
It never seems to amaze me how the intimidation continues. It is just blatant racism and a scare tactic that sends a message to folks that we as citizens need to be treated as if we are less human than the board members. And then they wonder why parents do not come to their meetings and/or visit their schools. Because we are not welcome and the hell if they encourage parent/community involvement. Oh yes they do, but they hand pick the parents/community folks whom they want to deal with.
I had no problem with going to the back of the room to video however I was not going to allow this chick to make it appear as if I had been blocking the doorway. I set up at the front of the room no matter where I video because I like to get the face of people and not their backs.
Who clean up the schools? Coker Wimberly school custodians probably not the right word for them however you know who I am talking about, won the award for doing a great service. I see Diane LeFiles did take a picture of these 3 black workers however in the past she has not taken pictures of them during the awards ceremonies. I addressed that issue so I am glad to see their pictures were taken. However I noticed Diane used a little small camera and not the usual camera that she takes pictures of other awardees. And she had the audacity to make some kind of comment about the little camera during the award presentation.

The Edgecombe County Public Schools system has been blessed in recent years with dynamic leadership from strong superintendents. Here’s hoping that trend continues with the next person to lead the system — and that the new superintendent sticks around for a while. (Read more @ The Rocky Mount Telegram)
Note: Edgecombe County is a strange county.
Dr. Steve Stone did all the above however he left the county in a financial bind and had some issues. Dr. Stone said he was going to stay here atleast 12 – 14 years and he lied. The system went to hell during his tenure and I know because I was very actively engaged in the system during his tenure.
I received phone calls from Bertie County that we didn’t want Dr. Stone to come here. I did work with him and had no problem with him until he got ignorant when I challenged the schools in the southern end of the county. It is funny as hell that this article do not mention that the financial auditor said Dr. Witherspoon, the first black superintendent in this county is the only superintendent who did such a great job with the finances. Dr. Witherspoon leaves the school system better than all the others before him because they have working capital and they do not have to worry about the money.
I do not recall Dr. Witherspoon saying how long he would stay here. The new superintendent can focus on other areas while making sure they keep the finances in check. Many jobs CEOs do not stay but around 5 years so I believe the superintendent can be considered as a CEO. C. Dancy II
