Repost: From the Publisher – Response to Evelyn Wilson Edgecombe County BOE Chair “Schools help – not hurt – students”

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on September 2, 2011

First of all I attended the Edgecombe County Public Schools board of education meeting on this past Monday night. During the transition from the public meeting and the break before they began the closed meeting, Evelyn Wilson was explaining to the Rocky Mount Telegram’s reporter a black female that she didn’t know what the D.A. Robert A. Evans was referring to because he had not been to a school board meeting. After listening to them I said, how do you know he was talking about ECPS and both of them walked over to where I was sitting. I said Evans used to sit on the Rocky Mount Charter School board and so did Leonard Wiggins whom Wilson named in her response.

It is my opinion that Evans has served on both sides of the fence whereby he has served on the Rocky Mount Charter School Board and in the courtroom. I am quite sure he is a parent as well, but I don’t know him personally so I am not going to attempt to speak for him. However he does a good job speaking for himself.

I find Evelyn Wilson’s response in defense of the Edgecombe County Public Schools to be quite interesting especially when I am an involved Negro and has been since the early 90’s however I am a product of the ECPS. I have a daughter that just graduated on this past Friday and I have a son who will be going to the middle school on next year.

I know the board objective should be to educate all children however Wilson and other board members are very much aware that there are some educators who does not give a damn about the children and/or they feel do not have the necessary skills. Administrators are removed from the classroom and sent to the central office from time to time. Some administrators are removed from certain schools and the list goes on. But the thing is the board of education never give a reason to the public why such moves. Unlike some folks I understand that it is a personnel issue.

Wilson you say parents do not need to spend a lot of time challenging the school system. Well Wilson I have had to challenge the system dating back to 1993 when a group of children who staged a walkout at SouthWest Edgecombe High School when a white coach grabbed a black student around the neck in the hallway. The white student body government President and other students protested. I received numerous calls the night before. I went to work at 5:00 am that morning and got off at 9:00 am and went to the school to help resolve this issue. I was the 1st vice president of the Rocky Mount NAACP during that time.

After the incident above I became a member of (P.I.E.) Partners in Education where the late Beverly May along with Katie Staton was the chair and co-chair. The group was able to get black males to volunteer to work in the school system running copies and doing other minor things. The goal was to have some black role models in the school since there was a shortage of black male teachers.

The principal at that time Lowell Thomas said I couldn’t volunteer nor T. C. Cherry former Highway Patrol and now currently an Edgecombe County Commissioner because we were both racist. I had responded to Cherry who had written an article in the Rocky Mount Telegram saying a local grocery store closed because black people were stealing merchandise.

One day Thomas and I had a deep discussion and he invited me to the cornfield (a racist term) and walked out of the school in front of me. The Rocky Mount NAACP where I served as the 1st Vice President asked for his resignation. Later the President Rev. Elbert Lee, Rev. Richard Joyner, Evelyn Wilson and some other black folks met with Thomas and nothing was done.

Wilson you say, “it is the business of Edgecombe County Public Schools to help students, not hurt them.” It should be and I trust that the majority of the administrators have that mentality.

I know that because of my challenge at  South Edgecombe Middle School in a one year’s time frame 2 principals were moved to the Central Office. We later got principal number 3 who retired at the end of the year and then it was principal number 4 which was the first black principal in the schools history. But he was not ready however he had some racist administrators to deal with.

Well Wilson what in the hell do you think happened when principal number 1 at South Edgecombe Middle School tried to keep my daughter and several others from receiving the “A” honor roll several years ago at the end of the 6th grade school year. The “A” students received a trophy and my daughter was given the “B” honor roll. My wife and I spent countless hours during that summer learning how to do an excel spreadsheet. After exhausting all of our means and addressing the board of education that summer, it appeared we were not getting anywhere. But the good master laid the answer on us and at the beginning of the following school year South Edgecombe had to go back and have another ceremony not only to give my daughter her “A” and the trophy but they had to give others theirs as well.

The Superintendent of ECPS during that time found out that we had a problem with the grading system within the middle school. He found that if a child moved from one middle school in the county that their grades did not truly follow them. The middle schools were not truly using the SIMS system and were doing the grades by hand so they say. The system put something in place to take care of the problem.

I also challenged principal number 1 that same year when he got on the intercom and called all the black males to the auditorium to lecture them because he was trying to send a message that black males were at-risk. Well damn all of the males were not per say at risk. However hell all black folks are at-risk if you let some folks tell the story. What this principal did was unprofessional to single out all black males during the school day so what kind of message did that send to the white males, white females and the black females as it relates to black males as if they all were troublemakers. This principal had the audacity to communicate with me via emails and I still have them on file. How ignorant or maybe he just didn’t care.

Well Wilson what in the hell do you think happened when my daughter watched principal number 2 ban me from the school because I questioned the process used during the PTO election night and after the election when we went to the various classrooms to pick up report cards and to talk to the teachers? The principal followed me as we went to the classrooms. In one of my daughter’s classes I asked the teacher about an issue with a grade pertaining to a question on a test. The principal said okay Dancy leave. I said I have not done anything and so he said he was going to call the police. I said to call him. I went to the next class and my wife and daughter followed him to the office. I waited for the Sheriff Deputy to come while standing outside talking to the Pinetops Police who came out but could not act because it was out of his jurisdiction. The deputy asked us where was the principal and we said inside. When the deputy came back out he said the principal wanted me to leave. I said can I get a police report and he said it would not be one. I left the school and 2 days later I received a letter from the Superintendent that I was banned from the school. I recorded the election on video and presented this to the board. I was recording my daughter’s volleyball games at the time and basketball season was going to start afterwards. I gave the coaches a copy so they could view the video and learn from their mistakes. But remember I  was banned from the school.

Principal number 2  administrators who served on the PTO and School Improvement Team where I was a member had a problem with me because I challenged them.  They told him they had a problem with me because I had a talk show on a local radio station. What did they have to hide? I requested that the Central Office provide the administrators with diversity training and they did along with G.W. Carver Elementary School as well. You know they were mad with me about this.

Principal number 2 only stayed at the school from the beginning of the school year until December

Principal number 3 sent a letter to all of the administrators shortly after he arrived saying I was allowed back into the school because he did not see where I had done anything wrong.

So Wilson I beg the difference when you say, “Schools help – not hurt students.” That should be the final answer however that is not the case always. Well my friend the system hurt my daughter as well as my wife and I.

You also said, “the parents do not need to spend a lot of time challenging the system.”  My wife and I had to challenge the system an entire summer. Hell we would have loved to spent that summer doing other things however it was all about justice, justice for my daughter and the others who benefitted.

Note: Original post dated: June 9, 2009 Reposted today because this is the beginning of a new school year and it is time to gear up again. Son is in the eighth grade at South Edgecombe Middle School and daughter is a Junior at North Carolina Central University and I am a proud parent of both.

Edgecombe County – South Edgecombe Middle School Gymnasium Named After Board Member William Keith Pittman

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on August 9, 2011

Norfleet Suggs attended the Edgecombe County Public Schools August monthly board meeting on behalf of the community requesting the South Edgecombe Middle School Gymnasium be named in honor of William Keith Pittman. The vote was unanimous.

Pittman was a coach and taught driver’s education at South Edgecombe. He was my driver’s ed teacher back in the day.

See video coming soon to see this historical and special moment. For one time Pittman was without words and also see a grown man cry.

I feel strongly that Pittman deserves this honor and I am glad I was there to capture the moment on video/photo and to be a witness but also to be able to congratulate him on this special evening. Pittman always treat me with much respect and I don’t care if he is at a board meeting, at Abrams BBQ & Restaurant, Hardees or anywhere he always acknowledge me and always telling somebody how much he thinks of me. The feeling is mutual.

So I ask the people in the southern part of Edgecombe County and abroad to join me and welcoming Mr. William Keith Pittman on this great honor since he is still alive and able to celebrate this honor with the community.

Note: Must apologize, I fell asleep last night and didn’t get to do my reporting. Video and pictures of the meeting coming soon. Curmilus Dancy II – Videographer and Photographer The DCN

Awards Day Celebration At South Edgecombe Middle School Response To Not Receiving Awards Unacceptable

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on June 10, 2011

Sent: Friday, June 10, 2011 7:40 PM

Mr. Grady:

An error ocurred? What? So what was the error?

Ms. Griffin told my wife that the teachers were suppose to turn in the names 2 weeks before school ended.

I have never seen an Award’s Day that was so sorry in all of my days. I am used to each teacher giving out awards to their classes however only you and your assistant were the only 2 on the stage giving out the awards.

So why did the teachers not participate because they didn’t want to or because you didn’t want them to?

Again this is not an acceptable answer and it is sad that the children work hard all year and then when it is time for the reap their awards on stage it is snatched from them.

The more I think about what could have gone wrong, I believe it was planned that only a few children would receive their awards on stage and that the others would receive theirs in the classroom anyway.

Mr. Dancy,

Good Morning.

Thank you for attending the awards program of South Edgecombe Middle School. Your family has served the school in a positive voluntary basis during the 2010-2011 school year. We thank you and the entire family for the support.
An error occurrred that caused your son not to receive his award during the program. We apologize for the incident.
Upon your earlier e-mail, I checked his records, confirmed that he had earned a "B" Honor Roll certificate. We printed and presented it to him in his class.
A check of the records will occur to ensure that no other student was denied an award they earned.

Thank You,
William Grady

Children Not Receiving Their Awards On Awards Day South Edgecombe Middle School

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on June 10, 2011

South Edgecombe Middle School

Greetings Mr. Grady Principal:

I am pissed that I have not received a response from Ms. Griffin nor you with an answer to my previous email.

I went to work at 5:00 AM and got off at 9:00 AM so that I could attend the Awards Day. I came to watch my son and the other children receive their awards since this is what Awards Day is designed for. This is something that takes place during the final days of school yearly so therefore it is no damn excuse for any children not receiving their awards at the specified time.

My wife said she was told that the school wanted the names of the children turned 3 weeks ago if I am correct and that some teachers didn’t have time or something. This is no excuse. The children are expected to do what they come to school to do and the same should apply to the staff. The children are penalized for not doing what they are supposed to do and it is more than likely that the staff will not be reprimanded for their unprofessionalism. If the staff were to be penalized, it still does nothing to correct the situation because the children missed the opportunity to go on stage and receive their certificates on a day designed for the children and the parents to participate.

My son came home with his certificate “B” Honor Roll. My son coming home with the certificate does not answer my question and I am still waiting for a response. Although my son did receive another certificate Most Improved in a category, I am a proud to be a parent of a child that made the “B” Honor Roll and “A” Honor Roll list during the entire school year in which at the end of the year equated to a “B” Average.

As always I video and take pictures of events such as Awards Day and I was unable to capture my son receiving his “B” Honor Roll Certificate nor other children because I know that the short list of names called yesterday were not the complete list.

I am now having a flashback to when I had to challenge a previous principal at this school several years ago when my daughter was cheated out of the “A” Honor Roll so she would not receive a trophy but instead was given the “B” Honor Roll. Because of my complaint, the school had to go back and have another Awards Day at the beginning of the next school year and several students received their correct award. During this time of my complaint it was discovered that the 3 middle schools in the county grading system was not consistent and that if a child was to move to another middle school within the county the child’s grades may have not followed them correctly. A new policy was put in place.

In my closing, I want to reiterate that it is sad that the children are penalized when they do not do what they are tasked to do. It is a damn shame that the staff have cheated the children out of a day that was designed for them when the staff should have done their job of making sure the children received what is rightfully theirs at the right time. It is not fair to them nor the parents such as myself who have to work but is willing to take the time to support their child.

We are always hearing much about the negativity of the children and then when it comes time for the children to be recognized for their hard work, they are penalized by the staff because the staff failed to do their part. This is unacceptable for me.

I am still waiting on a response because I would like to know the reason why my child and other children did not receive their award on Awards Day.

Thanking you in advance.

South Edgecombe Middle School Teacher, Visitor, Students Confrontation Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on June 8, 2011

So was this visitor properly signed in at this local school and why did he feel he had permission to address this teacher’s classroom?

It was reported to me that a female teacher at South Edgecombe Middle School had a male friend visitor in her class today and it was reported there was a confrontation with him and her class.

Today Wednesday, June 8, 2011 around 2:00 PM it was reported that my great niece was verbally attacked by a teacher by the name of Matthew Carlyle whom it was reported he is a 2nd grade teacher in Wake County. From my understanding he is a friend of Language Arts teacher, Ms. Rachel Newbern. A movie was playing, the kids were laughing as kids would do and it was reported that Mr. Carlyle was out of his seat yelling in my niece’s face to shut her mouth, that the whole class was nothing, his 2nd graders acted better than they do, and that my great niece was disrespectful. Ms. Newbern let this abuse go on in her presence and did not intervene until my great niece began to cry. My great niece’s mother came to pick her up around 2:15 PM and she and a few of her friends met my great niece’s mom at the door to tell her what happened.

Mr. William Grady Principal asked my great niece’s mother what the problem was and she asked him could she speak with Ms. Newbern and her visiting friend but she was not allowed to speak to either of them. Mr. Grady and my great niece’s mother got into a verbal confrontation in which Mr. Grady threatened to call the police and she told him to please do so. Mr. Grady then asked my great niece and her mother to sit in his office. Ms. Terri Williams sat with them in the office while Mr. Grady went to talk to Mr. Carlyle. Grady then comes back into the office and tells them Mr. Carlyle said that he said nothing to my great niece. My great niece asked Mr. Grady did those 4 kids make up the same lie about this stranger. Mr. Grady then writes down all the names of the kids who witnessed the abuse. He goes back out of the office to talk to the students. He then returns to the office and tells them that in conclusion of his investigation it is determined that some inappropriate comments were made to my great niece. He then apologized and said that Mr. Carlyle wasn’t allowed on that school campus again. My great niece’s mother do not feel like that’s what he told Mr. Carlyle but she cannot prove it.

My great niece’s mother said my great niece is uncomfortable going to school tomorrow because Ms. Newbern let that man talk to her that way and sat there and literally watched him disrespect her.

My great niece’s mother tried to take out a warrant at the magistrates office but she was told she could not do so since she did not have an address for Mr. Carlyle. The magistrate gave her some steps to take.

In my closing, I don’t know what actually happened but it appears that something happened especially for Mr. Grady Principal felt the need to apologize.

South Edgecombe Middle School 7th Graders had the opportunity to visit the Nation’s Capitol on Friday, June 3, 2011. The tour began around 5:30 AM. The first stop was at the Nation’s Capitol and we met with our Congressman G.K. Butterfield 1st Congressional District Wilson NC. South Edgecombe is in the 1st Congressional District.

Congressman Butterfield gave the children a brief history of his role in the US House of Representative and  the history of the Senate, The Executive Branch and the Judicial.

Congressman Butterfield’s photographer took a picture of the Congressman with the children.

After the picture all of us got a chance to go in the Capitol and into the Gallery where the Congressman and others vote on laws. We had the opportunity to see some debate on the issue of President Barack Obama attempt to pull the military out of Libya. We left before the vote took place.

We were unable to take cameras in the Gallery so therefore there are no pictures or video.

We ate lunch at the Food Court of the train station. We then visited the Natural History Museum, Vietnam Memorial, WWII Memorial, Washington and Lincoln Monuments.

Thank you Ms. Griffin for a fun day in the city of the Nation’s Capitol.

Special thanks to Congressional G.K. Butterfield and his staff.

Prinicpals In Edgecombe County Public Schools Transferred To Other Schools

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on May 10, 2011

The following was the recommendation for board approval at the Monday, May 9, 2011 Board of Education Meeting.

Marc Whichard Principal of Martin Middle is going back to South West Edgecombe where he was an assistant principal.

William Grady Principal at South Edgecombe Middle School is going back to Martin Middle School where he was principal.

It will be interesting to see who replaces Grady over at South Edgecombe. I would love to see Donnell Brown Principal at Phillips Middle School return back to South Edgecombe where he was the assistant principal.

Some new faces in some new places, Edgecombe County Public Schools announces adminstrative changes

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on June 23, 2010

TARBORO — There will be some new faces in some new places when students return to class this fall.

While the search for a new superintendent continues, others within the Edgecombe County Public School system will be playing musical chairs. (Read more @ The Daily Southerner)

Note: I find the change at South Edgecombe to be quite interesting. I have heard several folks talk about the dealings they had with the head principal. I have had some dealings with him and aware of some others whom have had some dealings with him as well.

Someone approached me on Monday morning to tell me that the assistant principal at South Edgecombe had been moved to West Edgecombe because it was said that he and the head principal didn’t work well together.

Someone also told me that the Edgecombe County Public Private Elementary School G.W. Carver was going to get another assistant principal which now they will have a principal and 2 assistants because of the population of the school. Interesting.

It is a damn shame all of the mess that goes on at South Edgecombe and G. W. Carver but not limited to and this is all of the changes that I have heard about.

I also heard that Tommy Tolson will be the new baseball coach at SouthWest Edgecombe High School and that many do not welcome that move.
