There’s no doubt that recessions are bad for business. And the U.S. economy is no stranger to recessions, having experienced an estimated 47 of them since 1790. Yet, at the same time, some of the best-known companies around have their roots in those tough economic times that the government defines as "a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real gross domestic product (GDP), real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.” (Read more)

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on March 7, 2009
Please forward to those interested in uplifting the involvement and voice of Black people at the state, local and national levels.
NC Black Leadership Caucus – March 21st Mtg
Elections update
The last twelve months have been historical, uplifting and a signal of change to come. As our new President has stated frequently, change begins with each of us and we need your help. On Saturday, March 21st, 2009, the NC Black Leadership Caucus will have its monthly third Saturday meeting. These meetings are an opportunity for Black North Carolinians of all backgrounds to come together to share their concerns for present and future prosperity and to impact change through targeted action. In 2009, the NCBLC seeks to rebuild the membership and input within the thirteen congressional districts for maximum support on issues that affect each of us and it takes all of us to make this happen. Please join us!
Details are below:
When: Sat, March 21, 2009
Where: Office of Brad Thompson & Associates
132 E. Morgan St, Downtown Raleigh NC
(next to First Baptist Church)
Time: 11am
(Scroll down for more info on upcoming officer elections in April).
History:
The North Carolina Black Leadership Caucus was organized in October 1976 to consolidate the civil rights and voting rights gains of the past into a new and different thrust for Black political and social influence. Since that time, the goal of the Caucus has been to seek full equity for all Black North Carolinians.
Membership & Upcoming Elections:
The strength of the Caucus comes from its core – the membership. During the historic Obama campaign and volunteer turnout, attendance at meetings dropped while everyone worked to initiate change. Because of the busy season, the fall 2008 elections were postponed and will be held on Saturday, April 18th, 2009 at the Office of Brad Thompson & Associates. Voting will begin promptly at 11:30am.
After much discussion at the recent February meeting, members in attendance moved to suspend the rules (controlling bylaws) pertaining to voting eligibility at the upcoming elections to allow for the greatest input from NCBLC members. Therefore, all lifetime members and any annual member that was current on dues as of Dec. 31, 2008 are eligible to vote in the April election for officers. New members will be eligible to vote in the September 2010 election of officers and on agenda items throughout the year. New members are also eligible to volunteer on issue committees, special events and to chair such committees and events. (Bylaws are attached).
Election Offices:
· Chairperson
· Vice Chairperson
· Secretary
· Treasurer
· Parliamentarian
· Membership Chair
· Three Regional Vice Chairs (Eastern, Piedmont, Western)
Annual Membership: $15
Lifetime Membership: $150
Membership Form available at www.ncblackleadershipcaucus.com
Nominations for Upcoming Elections/Candidates:
The nominating committee for upcoming elections is appointed by the NCBLC Chair. See pg. 17 of Bylaws for official duties of the nominating committee. If you would like to be appointed, please call Carnell Robinson by Monday, March 9th at 8pm at 910-574-3503. The official nominating committee roster will be publicized via email and official NCBLC website by Thursday, March 12th and anyone seeking to run in the April elections is asked to attend our March meeting, contact a member of the nominating committee, or the current NCBLC chair.
Structure:
The concept of the NCBLC is structured throughout thirteen congressional districts and one hundred counties within North Carolina, the Caucus membership includes concerned citizens and community residents, progressive organizational leaders, public officials, community activists, clergy and working men and women from all qualities of life who are concerned about the survival of Black people and have joined forces to fight systemic oppression in all forms and at all levels.
Notes from the February meeting will be emailed no less than two days prior to the meeting. Please contact an executive committee member is you have questions.
